During the 80’s, New York city’s Graffiti writers exploded onto the art scene and, along with the B-Boys of Hip Hop, soon crossed over every mainstream cultural marker to dominate the global pop milieu from music to fashion and language.
Meanwhile in Canada, a solemn group of artists, working primarily in photo conceptualism, were creating their own quiet storm – a movement that art critics, curators and gallerists began referring to as “the Vancouver School”.
The legacy of the Vancouver School movement continues to influence art photography and produced globally renowned artists like Roy Arden, Ian Wallace, Jeff Wall, Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham and a fraternity of others.
Light boxes, which were – and remain – primarily used for billboard and advertising in public spaces, became the medium for re-owning the visual landscape.
Conceptual photography and light box art have continued to weave across each other’s trajectory into digital modernity, and their present evolution as functional art and lighting design.
