Bitcoin is a payment network and a
digital currency that can be transacted
as well as transferred directly from
person to person via the Internet without

Bitcoin miners and investors are
required to report all income from
bitcoins as a taxable income.
IRS guidelines treat bitcoins as a
property, which means accountants
must make sure to file all bitcoin
transaction details of their clients while
preparing the W-2s and 1099-MISCs.

8. What IRS wants you to Know about
Bitcoins -
• Wages paid to employees using bitcoins are taxable to
the employee, must be reported by an employer on a
Form W-2, and are subject to federal income tax
withholding and payroll taxes.
• Payments using virtual currency made to independent
contractors and other service providers are taxable and
self-employment tax rules generally apply.
• The character of gain or loss from the sale or exchange
of virtual currency depends on whether the virtual
currency is a capital asset in the hands of the taxpayer.
• A payment made using virtual currency is subject to
information reporting to the same extent as any other
payment made in property.
