Brief introduction:
Background: National Health Education Information and Communication
Centre (NHEICC) has implemented different activities at the community level
for more than two decade (since 2051/52 BS). However, various studies
depict the knowledge of adolescents on health and development issue is still
poor resulting in the low utilization of health care services. It is even worse in
the remote communities. The absence of lesson plan and relevant job aids
has posed a great challenge for health workers and school teachers to impart
knowledge on adolescent health for years. Taking this fact into
consideration, NHEICC has developed School Health Lesson Plan (SHLP) on
ASRH with four major adolescent health issues like: Adolescence,
Reproductive Health and Sanitation; Appropriate age at marriage and
pregnancy; Safe Sex, Family Planning and Delayed Pregnancy; and Gender
Equity, Gender Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.
The technical assistance has been provided by GIZ-HSSP and H4L/USAID. GIZ
will support NHEICC to orient health workers and school teachers of 10 HSSP
working districts of Nepal including Kailali, Doti, Achham, Dadeldhura and
Baitadi in Far-Western Development Region.
The overall objective of the orientation of school health education lesson
plan on ASRH to health workers and school health teachers is to enhance
their capacity so that they deliver appropriate ASRH message to adolescents
through effective school health education sessions.
The specific objectives are:
 Enhance the capacity of health workers and school health teachers
for delivery of effective school health education sessions on ASRH
 Improve coordination between health workers and school health
teachers.

Discussion about the technical component of the course:
Mr. Deepak Timsina (DT) had a PowerPoint presentation on the introduction,
objective and the implementation modality of School Health Education
Lesson Plan. He further explained about the technical contents of the SHLP:
Lesson 1: Adolescence, Reproductive Health and Sanitation
Lesson 2: Appropriate age at marriage and pregnancy
Lesson 3: Safe Sex, Family Planning and Delayed Pregnancy
Lesson 4: Gender Equity, Gender Based Violence and Sexual and
Reproductive Health Rights.
Similarly, Mr. Nirajan Khadka (NK) described about the cultural sensitivity of
the course, provision of pre and post-test, evaluation of the scores of pre
and post-tests, reporting to DHO/GIZ-HSSP and the provision of the amount
of facilitators' allowance for teachers and health workers.
Group Work and Presentation:
Participants were divided in four groups to present/demonstrate teaching
activity of four different lesson plans based on "School Health Education
Lesson Plan Implementation Booklet".
Group presentation was done by the individual groups on the second third
day followed by a discussion and feedback session. Feedback on effective
Teaching was given by the participants, guests and facilitators.
Comments from guests: 1. Ms. Rita Joshi Bhandari (Sr. PHA) requested all of the health workers and
school teachers for the effective implementation of School Health
Education Lesson Plans in their communities. She also informed the
participants that there are about 20 school health classes per health
facility in the current year and requested Health Providers to take more
classes on ASRH issues under NHEICC's School Health Education
Programme.
2. Ms. Joshi further stressed that Neonatal Mortality Rate and Maternal
Mortality Ratio could be reduced to a significant extent, if the spirit of
Adolescent Health and Development is met in the district. She informed
the participants that early marriage including child marriage is still
socially accepted in Doti and this has aggravated the health problems of
women in Doti.
3. Mr. Laxmi Raj Ojha, DEO Representative, DEO Doti made a remark that
indicators of Adolescent Health and Development can be improved only
when schools and health facility collaborate. Such a platform for
collaboration has been provided by School Health Education Lesson Plan.
So, he thanked NHEICC and GIZ for this support.

Participants:
1. The participants were very excited to learn about the SHELP package.
They have expressed strong commitments for successful implementation
of the plan prepared during the orientation.
2. It is simple and easy to follow for health workers and teachers as it is
properly instructed and is teaching friendly.
Major Decisions made: 1. The two days orientation program decided to implement developed
"Work Plan for the Implementation of School Health Education Lesson
Plan (SHELP)" effectively with the support of DHO and GIZ-HSSP.

However, various studies depict the knowledge of adolescents on health and development issue is still poor resulting in the low utilization of health care services. It is even worse in the remote communities. The absence of lesson plan and relevant job aids has posed a great challenge for health workers and school teachers to impart knowledge on adolescent health for years. Taking this fact into consideration, NHEICC has developed School Health Lesson Plan (SHLP) on ASRH with four major adolescent health issues like: Adolescence, Reproductive Health and Sanitation; Appropriate age at marriage and pregnancy; Safe Sex, Family Planning and Delayed Pregnancy; and Gender Equity, Gender Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. The technical assistance has been provided by GIZ-HSSP and H4L/USAID. GIZ will support NHEICC to orient health workers and school teachers of 10 HSSP working districts of Nepal including Kailali, Doti, Achham, Dadeldhura and Baitadi in Far-Western Development Region. The overall objective of the orientation of school health education lesson plan on ASRH to health workers and school health teachers is to enhance their capacity so that they deliver appropriate ASRH message to adolescents through effective school health education sessions. The specific objectives are:  Enhance the capacity of health workers and school health teachers for delivery of effective school health education sessions on ASRH  Improve coordination between health workers and school health teachers.

Major issues/topics/agenda discussed Discussion about the technical component of the course: Mr. Deepak Timsina (DT) had a PowerPoint presentation on the introduction, objective and the implementation modality of School Health Education Lesson Plan. He further explained about the technical contents of the SHLP: Lesson 1: Adolescence, Reproductive Health and Sanitation Lesson 2: Appropriate age at marriage and pregnancy Lesson 3: Safe Sex, Family Planning and Delayed Pregnancy Lesson 4: Gender Equity, Gender Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. Similarly, Mr. Nirajan Khadka (NK) described about the cultural sensitivity of the course, provision of pre and post-test, evaluation of the scores of pre and post-tests, reporting to DHO/GIZ-HSSP and the provision of the amount of facilitators' allowance for teachers and health workers. Group Work and Presentation: Participants were divided in four groups to present/demonstrate teaching activity of four different lesson plans based on "School Health Education Lesson Plan Implementation Booklet". Group presentation was done by the individual groups on the second third day followed by a discussion and feedback session. Feedback on effective Teaching was given by the participants, guests and facilitators. Comments from guests: 1. Ms. Rita Joshi Bhandari (Sr. PHA) requested all of the health workers and school teachers for the effective implementation of School Health Education Lesson Plans in their communities. She also informed the participants that there are about 20 school health classes per health facility in the current year and requested Health Providers to take more classes on ASRH issues under NHEICC's School Health Education Programme. 2. Ms. Joshi further stressed that Neonatal Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Ratio could be reduced to a significant extent, if the spirit of Adolescent Health and Development is met in the district. She informed the participants that early marriage including child marriage is still socially accepted in Doti and this has aggravated the health problems of women in Doti. 3. Mr. Laxmi Raj Ojha, DEO Representative, DEO Doti made a remark that indicators of Adolescent Health and Development can be improved only when schools and health facility collaborate. Such a platform for collaboration has been provided by School Health Education Lesson Plan. So, he thanked NHEICC and GIZ for this support. Comments from Participants: 1. The participants were very excited to learn about the SHELP package. They have expressed strong commitments for successful implementation of the plan prepared during the orientation.
  • 3. 2. It is simple and easy to follow for health workers and teachers as it is properly instructed and is teaching friendly. Major Decisions made: 1. The two days orientation program decided to implement developed "Work Plan for the Implementation of School Health Education Lesson Plan (SHELP)" effectively with the support of DHO and GIZ-HSSP.
