2. Definition of rehabilitation
According to WHO-
Rehabilitation is defined as “a set of interventions designed to optimize
functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in
interaction with their environment”.
Rehabilitation enables individuals of all ages to maintain or return to their daily life
activities, fulfil meaningful life roles and maximize their well-being.
The noun rehabilitation comes from the Latin prefix “re”-, means “again” and
“habitare”, means “make fit”.
Anybody may need rehabilitation at some point in their lives, following an injury,
surgery, disease or illness, or because their functioning has declined with age.
Especially in sports, there has a very crucial role of a rehab trainer in rehabilitating
injured athletes. Without a rehab trainer, an athlete cannot be cured completely,
early and of course physically and mentally.
3. History of Rehabilitation:
Athletic Training & rehabilitation had already started back in ancient
Greece where athletics was an important part of Greek culture. They
already knew about massage which has an important role in athletic
performance. The ancient medical trainers were said to possess ideas
about the effect of diet, rest, and exercise on the development of the
body. Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine,” and his student
Claudius Galen often advised their patients to exercise in gymnasia to
recover from their ills.
In the 18th century history of Rehabilitation in sports, there have many
names of important persons like Rutgers and Princeton, James
Robinson etc. After that NATA(The National Athletics Trainers’
Association) set up with 200 Athletic Trainers in 1950 & then in 1969
NATABOC and then 1989 BOC(Board of Certification) had set up for
certifying the trainers.
4. So, let’s try to know about the role of the rehab trainer and
what he has need to do-
Based on the treatment types:
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.
Physical Rehabilitation
Speech Rehabilitation.
Occupational Rehabilitation.
Psychological Rehabilitation.
6. There are seven principles also of
Rehabilitation:
ATC IS IT
A: avoid the aggravation
T: timing
C: compliance
I: individualization
S: specific Sequencing
I: intensity
T: total patient
7. Components of Rehabilitation:
pain management -to understand the pain of injuries
flexibility and joint ROM -to make the stiffness flexible
strength and endurance -to make the patient weak to strong and to
increase the cardiovascular endurance
proprioception and coordination -to mobilise joints and their
ligament, tendon and also muscular response
the use of Orthotics - for proper bone-related treatment
psychology of injury - to mental support
8. Rehabilitation team types-
Multidisciplinary team: it is when many different
professionals work together toward a common goal
Intradisciplinary team: a team of professionals who are all
from the same professions, such as three therapists
collaborating on the n same case.
Transdisciplinary Team: a composed of members of several
different professions cooperating across disciplines to
improve patient care through practice or research.
9. Team members are-
The rehabilitation team conventionally includes the
Physiatrist (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician),
Rehabilitation Nurse,
Physical(rage of motion) And Occupational Therapist (Motor Skill)
Speech Pathologist,
Rehabilitation Psychologist,
A Social Worker Or Case Manager
with the availability of other services such as nutrition and respiratory therapy.
10. Conclusion:
In conclusion, there has a need to mention one thing that there are
many misconceptions about rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation is not only for people with long-term physical
impairment. It is not a luxury health service that is available only to
those who can afford it.
At last, I would like to say that Rehabilitation and the role of every
rehab trainer is an inseparable part of sports which provides
technical support and motivation in sport-life of every athlete for
their great success in their sports carrier and by this backstage
support our country's ‘Department of Sports’ will achieve more
bright-future in the upcoming days.
Thank you.
