dipped a cube of sugar into his coffee and fed it to me. We are not
allow ed to drink coffee—even w ith lots of milk in it—until w e w ere
considered grow n up, but all of us children loved that occasional lump

Far up, helpless Wanda w as moving back and forth as much as the
narrow rock allow ed. From below came the strains of that pipe.
When it played there could be but one command—to move ahead.
Yet now there w as no w ay of moving in the regular direction. But
Jasek w as her master, her lord, her god—she must do w hat he
summoned her to do,
The order w as to come.
Wanda braced herself on the rock. She w orker her feet about until
they found support. He w as a long w ay off over there, commanding
her to come, and she must reach him as soon as she could. The peril
that lay below w asvanished; she had orders from her shepherd and
she trusted him.
The people stood about and gasped, and a murmur of indignation w ent
up from all the crow d, but so great w as the fear that Gessler had
inspired in them all that no one dared interfere, Tell himself, a moment
before so confident and self-possessed, seemed suddenly to collapse
at hearing the bailiff’s w ords.
1“Place any other punishment upon me!” cried Tell. “What if the boy
should move? What if my hand should tremble?” 2“Say no more!” cried
Gessler. “Shoot!”
3Tell w as in despair, but the little lad, his face bright w ith perfect trust,
ran stood against the linden tree at one end of the square.
