Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0

    Web 1.0 = receiver/static

Web 2.0 = participatory/interactive
http://hinchcliffe.org/img/web1vsweb2.png
Web 1.0
* powerful resources for educators and students, but...
* information moves from publishers to consumers
* information cannot be edited
* One-way Web
* Read-Only Web
Web 2.0
* as easy to create as it is to consume
* anyone can publish, share and change information
* Two-way Web
* Web 2.0

      This is changing our world!
What’s in a name?
          William Shakespeare, “Romeo & Juliet”

      Social networking sites (SNS)

What is Social Networking?

     http://pwoessner.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/networked-teacher.jpg
Examples of Web 2.0 (tools/
     services/applications/sites)
Benefits of Web 2.0
    for Education:
* engagement and motivation
* inquiry
* creativity
* information gathering
* reflection and metacognition
* communication
* collaboration!
•Creativity and Innovation - YouTube, Flickr
•Communication and Collaboration - blogs, wikis, Ning, Twitter, Flickr,
YouTube
•Research and Information Fluency - Delicious, wikis
•Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making - blogs,
wikis, Twitter
•Digital Citizenship - developing a useful PLN
•Technology Operations and Concepts - exploring new technologies
using current knowledge
Barriers to implementing
social networking services
in schools:
* assessment
* professional development and pre-service teacher training
* information literacy - finding the authority or truth
* intellectual property
e-safety issues:
* inappropriate content
* cyber-bullying
* stalkers and predators
Conclusion

Social networks are playing an increasing role in classrooms
around the world.
Though emerging research is positive, continue to explore
the potential educational benefits of SNS focusing on specific
services.
According to NET-S, teachers need to “demonstrate a
personal responsibility for lifelong learning.” SNS facilitate
this goal.
SNS offer unprecedented opportunities for communication
and collaboration--21st Century skills.
Recommendations

Educators should “encourage social networking services to
increase educational value” (NCSB, 2007, p. 8).

Schools should use social networking for staff
communications and professional development.

Educators take more responsibility for their personal
professional development by participating in a social
networking community.

Notas do Editor

  1. To understand social networking, we need to take a look at how the Internet has changed.
  2. PLN
  3. a wide-range of rapidly developing services, tools and practices Internet based social spaces designed to facilitate communication, collaboration, and content sharing across networks of contacts
  4. There are hundreds of Web 2.0 sites, but how do you decide which ones are worth my time?
  5. It’s important to know what types of sites there are available and what they do.
  6. Two main barriers - assessment, filtering and professional development & pre-service teacher training We need to model good online behaviors and safety, as well as, a learning lifestyle
  7. So what’s the fuss all about and why should I care?
  8. Twitter is free and easy. Using the “find people” option, search using key words for your areas of interest It is a cross between chat and micro-blogging It can provide support and continued learning
  9. Before jumping on the Twitter bandwagon professionally, try participating on a personal level
  10. Here you can see the number of followers for each user. On this screen, you can also click “follow” and voila! You are following other people who are interested in the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals.
  11. If you choose to no longer follow someone, all you do is click “remove” and you are no longer following that person. Once you are comfortable finding and following people of personal interest, you can move onto people of professional interest.
  12. Start your own social network or join an established one.
  13. Here you can see the first two social networks focusing on boxers. You can see the number of members each network has and links to join each.
  14. Classroom 2.0 is the largest Ning for educators, but there are many more.
  15. A visual showing how SNS can be categorized
  16. Web 2.0 Tools with videos and explanation on my wiki
  17. So, join the conversation and…
