Maslow – We achieve independence and self esteem through

Learners who participated more missed

 academic achievement and had fewer

Students learn from students!
Students learn from each other via
observation, imitation and modelling (Albert
Bandura, 1969)

If teachers can use methods that encourage
these behaviours then students will enjoy
their course and achieve higher grades.
Learning through assessment
One of the things that David Nicol, from the
University of Strathclyde, said in his excellent
paper “Ten Principles of Good Assessment and
Feedback Practice” was -

“It is essential to deliver high quality
feedback to help learners self correct”

But you can only do this if you have the right
information about a students performance
How can we achieve this?
Some old methods of getting feedback from
students –
O Whiteboard with pens
O Flip chart paper
O Verbal feedback from just one or two
  students.
I don’t like whiteboards and
             pens!

In two years of teaching I have only used a
whiteboard or flipchart paper once !
What’s wrong with this
           method?
O Information is wiped from the whiteboard
    and lost.
O Flip chart information is difficult to share.
O Quiet students don’t give verbal feedback.
O Only one or two students may give an
    answer.
O It’s difficult to assess whether ALL
students have the correct answer to a
    question.
Low participation rate is NOT
           good !
          Why?
 One student with the correct
   answer can fool us into
  thinking the whole class
     knows the answer !
What to do?
O Give students thinking time.
O Everyone needs to work things out for
  themselves.
O Create a fun environment
O Get everyone involved.
O Record student feedback for use outside
  the classroom

                                   Reaction

From a poll of 63 students in Feb 2013
Geoff Petty (2009) says

 “Student activity provides
feedback to the learner and
teacher and is a window into
the students understanding”
Conclusion
O Participation leads to achievement
O Engage ALL your learners with a
  range of activities.
O Record student feedback to use
  later with assignments, to improve
  understanding and improve grades.
Thank you for listening !
