Summary from Week 1 to Week 8
The knowledge in learning “Health Information Management Technology”, and becoming first a
health information technician has taken me to a total new meaning in the healthcare
organization. All this is to say how medical records are used and why it’s so important to know
the basis steps, plus functions of Health Information Management. I have learned how medical
records accommodates the healthcare environment. In identifying the purpose and structure of
the responsibilities connected to the AHIMA, I learned the process of accreditation, and the
various specializations of health information management.
I have learned about the important Code of Ethics which consists of components of health
information management. I have learned about the hospital standardization and registries, and
being a registered health information technician. I have learned to sort out what’s necessary for
me become a HIT. HITs must know about the Master patient index management, Medical record
processing, Chart assembly, Medical record analysis and completion. I have learned medical
record coding, abstracting, about Medical record report dictation and transcription information. I
have also learned about the Medical record data collection and analysis, also forms that are used
in management (format and content), information confidentiality and security. In my learning
the traditions and the vision of the future of HIM’s, I have learned how integrated healthcare
35. delivery system works within the hospitals setting. I have learned about other provider setting
and nonprovider settings. I have observed and learned how to fill out consulting forms for
clinical appointments, long-term care. There are many new opportunities in the HIM field, and I
myself will work very hard to become a CCA.
There are five main functional areas that will be tested; with the examples being,
Data capture, validation, and maintenance
Data/information analysis, transformation, and decision support
Information dissemination and liaison
Health information resource management and innovation
Information governance and stewardship
There are so many things I have learned about in the HIM Department, from medical billing and
the reimbursement department. I have learned about organizational charts, length of stay, the
ICD-9-CM, the ICD-10-CM, HIM Higher Education and Workforce, Volunteer and Recognition.
Federal, State and Local laws concerning the healthcare liabilities. I have studied about the
practice of workflow and information management redesign specialists, Clinician/practitioner
consultants, and implementation support specialists. I have learned about aggregate data, data
accessibility, data accuracy, data definition, precision, quality management, relevancy and
timeliness. I learned about quality improvement organization, security, third party payers, and
transcriptionist. I have learned about the utilization management organization and regulation for
research. I have learned of the policy making decisions, which are all a part in conjunction with
the HIM Department services and their availability. I have observed and learned about the clinic,
electronic devices, and ethical, legal and fundamentals values of HIM. Nevertheless, the skills,
tools, hands-on experience are vital for the principal needs in the healthcare organizations.

Summary for Week 11 through 13
When I started working with DeWitt Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, I’ve learned about the
ICD-9-CM, and I continued to learn from Casa Promesa. I have broaden my scope on the
necessaries of forms, services, and assessments of patients. I learned and observed how to
close record charts and the way records should be purged of unnecessary items.
I have realized that maintaining medical records are very important to all the patients,
physicians, nurses, courts, and law offices. I have observed and learned to be in an environment
where lives matters and hope is not far away. I have set up the medical charts for the physicians
and nurses, plus provided the necessary forms that were required. I have learned about doing
the 24 hour report, sick call log, outguide and the physician review chart. I have been able to
work within the nurse’s unit with ease, and I learned how to make appointments and reschedule
them. I have observed and learn how to use the copy machines/fax, and the transmittal slips for
offsite storage. I have also learned about the admission/discharged, transportation and transfers
used in a paper-based format/hybrid setting. I also learned to do the labels on the consultant
forms, and attachment slips used in a medical setting. I have observed and learned about
barcodes, and how the healthcare delivery system circulates. I am ready to advance, and
become a part in the healthcare organization.
