Module Aims
To ensure that all students have a knowledge and understanding of chemistry which is sufficient to enable them
to comprehend the underlying chemical processes present in all biological systems. This will be an essential
prerequisite to the study of biochemistry and pharmacology.
To appreciate the importance of chemical reactions in the general environment.
To enable students to work competently and safely in a chemical laboratory.

ICIS Module Spec - BI1S54 Biological Chemistry
Content Summary
All of the below will be presented with an emphasis on biological systems, producing an emphasis on clinical &
pharmaceutical implications.
Atoms & molecules:
Atomic structure, electrons and chemical bonding. Types of bond and the shape of
45
molecules. Inorganic and organic chemistry. Processes which give large biological molecules their shape.
Water and chemical reactions:
Properties of water and its interaction via hydrogen bonds. Acids and bases, pH and buffer solutions. Chemical
reactions, equilibria and energetics. An introduction to thermodynamics.
Biological molecules:
Carbohydrates, Amino Acids and Proteins, Lipids and Nucleic Acids. Composition and roles in biological
systems.
Biological Inorganic chemistry
The role of inorganic molecules such as metal ions and small signalling molecules (such as NO and calcium).
The basics of changes in oxidation states in biological systems.
Enzymes:
Enzymes as catalysts, enzyme kinetics and inhibitors. Modification of enzyme activity as a biological control
process or site of pharmaceutical intervention.
