A Few Reflections onWhy your brain craves infographics!
1. "The use of visualized information has increased" in literature, the internet and newspapers
because of technological improvements, but that doesn't imply that our brain craves
infographics.
2. "We can get the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10 of a second" - what does that even
mean?
3. "It only takes us 150ms for a symbol to be processed + 100ms to attach a meaning to it" -
that's a fine fact, but how does that compare to the processing of words? and how does that
work for a people from another culture who doesn't understand the symbol?
4. Sign should read "HAZARD: Falling Rocks"
5. "Infographics help because we suffer from information overload" -- infographics might be
contributing to information overload
6. "Infographics counter information overload because...They're more engaging!" has nothing
to do with "Researchers found that colour visuals increase the willingness to read by 80%." --
what has that the research got to do with information overload?
7. "More accessible:" -- a grossly offensive lie, what about people with visual impairments
(285 million people) and people with colour blindness (595 million people)?
8. "More persuasive: A study conducted at the Wharton School of Business" -- look at the
source sited, not an academic reference, a training company.
9. "Easier to recall - 80% of what they SEE and DO." - The "DO" element here is
questionable, is scrolling up and down a screen the same as "DOING"?
