3. Why is this happening/Why is this a problem?
Many habitats are being destroyed every day for land expansion, agriculture, and
the extraction of natural resources. Pollution is also a major cause of damage in
wildlife habitats as well Invasive species coming in and changing the structure of
the environment. Another reason why this is happening to because people are
treating estuaries and wetlands like a dumping ground. According to crd.bc.ca
“People are using these estuaries and wetlands like areas that can be diked,
drained and filled.”
4. Types of Habitat loss
Habitat destruction- The physical destruction of a habitat. Ex a bulldozer digging
up an animal’s burrow.
Habitat fragmentation- The sectioning or fragmenting off of an animal’s habitat.
Ex. Highway cuts through a forest, a dam was built to section off a creek, etc.
Habitat degradation- The removal of a habitat to where it can no longer support
wildlife. Ex. Forest fires, pollution, etc.
5. Main Causes
Agriculture- Farmers would convert forests into prairie farmland, as run-off,
pollution, and biofuels impact the environment.
Ex. For farmlands, more than half of the indigenous insects have died due to the
removal of forests and the presence of pesticides that cover most of the farmland.
Climate Change- Many species will lose their habitats as the temperatures
change and sea levels rise, to force species out of their habitats.
Ex. The polar bear is slowly dying off, as the ice melts. Without the ice that
stretches for miles of the coast, the bears and most of the Arctic predators can’t
get to their food source (seals).
6. Main Effects
Reduction in Biodiversity - Biodiversity is the number of species in a specific
environment. When species lose their home they beginning to dead which causes
in a reduction in biodiversity.
Pollination and Seed dispersal - When wildlife habitats get destroyed the in lose
fruits and vegetables which they which they need for pollination.
Climate regulation - By reducing the biodiversity it regulates the climate by
reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Pest and disease control - By habitats being destroyed it limits the number of
plants. Making it easier for the remaining plants to be targeted.
7. Example (Deforestation)
Deforestation is a global example of wildlife destruction, as more than 30% of
Earth’s surface is covered in forests. Deforestation is the removal of trees, as only
bare ground is exposed. Deforestation is a problem today, due to the profit of
lumber and other natural resources that reside in the forests.
Haiti has a big problem with deforestation. The production of charcoal is the main
cause of this problem. They burn wood and other carbon-rich substances in the
oxygen proof surface to make charcoal. In Haiti charcoal is the main source of
energy and income.
8. Ex. (Deforestation) II
The effects of deforestation are detrimental, as they are home to more than 80%
of Earth’s biodiversity. The removal of trees can wipe out species and has even
left some animals extinct.
9. Degradation
Plant fertilizer is a reason for degradation in the ecosystem. Excess use of plant
fertilizer on plants could cause the plants to consume too much nutrients. This
could get into the water system which could create wildlife-killing algae blooms in
the ocean.
Also it is better if you plant native plants, bushes, trees etc in your backyard
instead of invasive plants. This would prevent specie fighting over the habitat and
killing off each other and their resources.

11. Pollution In Water
The world produces 300 billion pounds of plastic each year , 10% of this ends up
in the ocean. The debris eventually sinks reaching the floor bottom and damaging
habitats on the ocean floor.
Plastic constitutes 90% of all trash circulating the world’s oceans. Some areas
having a ratio of 6-to-1 plastic to plankton in 2008. This is not a good statistic to
have.
With animals consuming this plastic in the ocean , its small particles could lead
back up to us humans because we also eat these fish.

13. What can we do to help?
There are many things they we can do to help but I believe the easiest way that
we can is by reducing our carbon footprint. All that we as humans have to do is
instead of making the temperature in our houses during so warm during the winter
we turn the temperature down a little bit; and do the exact opposite in the summer,
raise the temperature in our houses a little bit instead of making it so cool. Also we
can roll down the windows in the car instead of using the air; and when you are
hot and if you are cold you can put on more clothing instead of using the heater.
14. Why this Solution will be effective
According to thoughtco.com, this solution will because: “It will help reduce the use
of greenhouse gases and slowing down the rate of global warming.” According to
climatecentral.org the top four hottest years on earth have been the last four
(2015-2018) with 2016 being the hottest.
15. What can we do to END Habitat destruction?
Reforest the World- Start replanting trees to bring back the loss forests and habitats.
End Plastic Pollution- Plastic pollution pollutes wildlife and disrupts habitats, so by putting
an end to plastic production would help wildlife species and habitats.
Protect Wildlife- By establishing more wildlife foundations and nature preserves to help keep
untouched forests from falling victim to deforestation and habitat loss.
Reduce Waste- Stop pollution and chemical run-off from getting into wildlife habitats such as
oceans and streams.
Green Buildings- They were built for environmental benefits. They reduce or eliminate
negative impacts on the environment by using less water, energy or natural resources. In
many cases they have positive impacts by generating their own energy or increasing
biodiversity.
