The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has impacted the community's physical and mental health through various programming and partnerships from 2007 to 2009. The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter has impacted the Central Indiana
Community and our Sorors in the areas of Physical & Mental Health from
2007 to 2009 through innovative programming & partnerships.

Programming about the importance and benefits
of lifestyle changes that affect longevity, morbidity,
and mortality for African American Women.
4. DSTeeny Meeny Marathon
A Friendly 6 Mile Race among Chapter Members
Purpose:
An innovative way to introduce exercise Chapter Members’ daily routine.
7. IRON CHEF DELTA
A cooking competition
among Sorors that
introduced heart
healthy recipes into
the diets of Sorors and
their families.
8. A healthy Lifestyle / weight-loss program
designed to educate Sorors about
healthy eating. Based on the info
recieved in the classes Sorors could lose
1-2 pounds or more per week.
Participants kept food diaries and
attended 30min of education followed
by 30min of exercise and weighed in at
every session.
Sorors with the highest percentage of
weight-loss enjoyed the payment of
their National Dues.
9. COMMUNITY HEALTHY LIFESTYLE INITIATIVE
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is
dedicated to improving the lives of
those in our community by
implementing programs that foster
healthy lifestyles. The Indianapolis
Alumnae Chapter has encouraged
families to get more active through
our Healthy Lifestyle Initiative —
Family Edition Program. The program
provided a variety of family activities in
the form of a bingo game. Families
worked to complete their game card
by participating in the activities and
marking squares as they progressed.

WOMEN CAMPAIGN!
IAC reached the most people
during the friendly competition
among Indiana Chapters. As a
result the Chapter won $1,000
for programs that promote
awareness of the risks & causes of
heart disease and that focuses
women on healthier lifestyles.

THE VILLA INN
The culminating activity for
the Go Red for Women Love
your Heart Friendly
Competition. There were
chair massages and wine
tasting, as well as information
from the American Heart
Association.
Proceeds and donations
benefitted the Legacy House.

POWER TO END STROKE
GOSPEL TOUR
IAC Sorors served as hostesses for the
Power to End Stroke Gospel Tour was
certainly a treat. It was truly an
informative and spirit filled event. We
had a chance to serve as hostesses with
other Sorors from around the state of
Indiana. We were also blessed to have
one of our chapter members, Soror
Christi Morse perform in the gospel
showcase.
14. HEART & SOUL WORKSHOP
We hosted our Power to End Stroke
Event “Heart & Soul”. The event had
guest speakers that talked about
nutrition, healthy food choices and
exercise. It was well attended and a
much needed program in our
community for women ages 18 and
older.
15. LOVE YOUR HEART RED & WHITE BALL
A SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER
IAC hosted a Red & White Ball on
Valentines Day in partnership with The
Power to End Stroke and Go Red for
Women. The purpose was two-fold, one
to raise money for the Chapter’s
scholarship fund and to serve as a
medium to inform guests about healthy
lifestyle decisions.
17. F.A.C.E. DIABETES WITH ELI
LILLY & ANGIE STONE
IAC became a community partner with the F.A.C.E
Diabetes Campaign sponsored by Eli Lilly & Company.
F.A.C.E stands for Fearless African-Americans Connected
and Empowered. This campaign is designed to help
individuals, families and neighborhoods in the African
American community overcome key barriers to success
in living with diabetes, as well as preventative measures.
Our chapter had a booth at the Community Event. The
event focused on healthy holiday cooking, and F.A.C.E.
spokesperson, neo-soul singer Angie Stone performed.
The event was free and free blood glucose meters were
given away. Over 700 people were in attendance. The next
community event is scheduled for April 18, 2009.

IAC has taken action against cultural health
disparities and strives to work towards a solution.

BLACK EXPO SUMMER CELEBRATION
Sorors served as “IAC Ambassadors”
as we partnered with the Indiana
State Department of Health to serve
as ushers & hostesses for acclaimed
actress, original Dreamgirl & our
esteemed soror, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s
one-woman show: Sometimes I Cry,
about the lives, loves and loses of
women infected and affected by HIV/
AIDS. This event was a part of the
Summer Celebration Events and was
free and open to the public.
20. DELTA DAYS AT THE STATE CAPITAL
Delta Days at the State Capital was
a success. Sorors advocated to
their state legislators regarding the
importance of heart health
education and preventative
healthcare in Indiana with the
guidance of the American Heart
Association.
22. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
MOTHER’S DAY FLOWERS GIVE-AWAY
IAC’s Delta Dears send flowers to Indianapolis Public Schools for the
children to give to their mothers for mothers day. The flowers are
accompanied by information cards from the American Heart Association.
24. RAISED $300 THROUGH THE DAMIEN
CENTER DOLLAR PROGRAM
Money used for the purchase of canned goods for the center’s pantry. The
Damien Center offers vital supportive services to those infected and affected
by HIV/AIDS.
