We will have a small discussion about where the European Union and Eurozone are leading to?
Definition of European Union – Economical and political Union of member countries all over from the European continent.Economical because of the same common currency, and big “common economy” where everyone is contributing, and one big common budget. For 2014 the budget is 141.9 Billion.Political – Because independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by the member states. The common currency - Euro. Now there are 28 member countries. This Union already exists for 60 years since it was set after the Second World War
To follow the present events in the European Union, I will shortly introduce you with history and reasons for setting up the European Union. After the second world war there was established a coal and steel community. Between Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium
Chronological development of EU - The formation of the Coal and steel Union was in 1950. Shuman declaration - In 1951 in Paris European Coal and Steal Community (ECSC) was founded - In 1957 in Rome European Economic Community (EEC) and European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC) were founded - In 1967 was founded the European Community (EC); - In 1980'ies EC was transforming to the EU; - In 1986 members of EC signed the Single European Act (279 actions needs to be accomplished by each EC member till December 31, 1992 to fully integrate as EU member); - In February 7, 1992 in Maastricht, the Netherlands, the Treaty of the European Union was ratified which transformed EC into EU. *(finally EU)
EU has developed into complex governing bodies. Who is making directives, policies, regulations and laws and all of this can contradict to your country national constitutions and have higher importance Their decisions are more important than national Constitution. But now let’s clear up what they are consisting off:European council: comes up with idea/law/directive (the most important one, consist of all representatives from all EU members, the president is appointed by the EU commission. Parliament has to agree before it turns out into fully scripted law. Councilors are appointed by parliament and ministry)European commission: are making a directives* (all paperwork) *Council of Ministers: they have to agree, correct, and reject the new laws* (different groups of same sector ministers deciding upon quotes rising goals, and making yearly plans)Parliament: does the same. Approving laws or rejecting. Its only one body elected by the EU populationWhen all of them agree upon law, then it can be implemented.Their laws are higher than national law. If country is not following the directive they can send to the EU court and be fined or sanctioned.
Ill will show video now to get overview how EU works, Its from 2008, its shortly as well talking about Lisbon treaty which was rejected by some countries.
*Since we know how the EU works, Lets draw the pros and cons together to compare the good positive sides and negative sides of the EU.*the audience is guessing what are bad and good sides of the EU, and in the end me finishing to write down what haven’t been mentioned.
Audience and me togetger brainstorming about pros and cons.
The EU has benefits, but by looking at it from both positive and negative sides, it is up to each person to decide if it bad or not. We had discussed among our self this a lot, and still there is things which we agree on but there is just as much we disagree on. Looking from a low-income-country it has more disadvantages than advantages. Low-income-country is more forced in to the Eurozone to become stronger and more equal compared to Western Europe. If you look at a high-income-country they have more advantages to stay out of the Eurozone. What the main principal in this discussion we have had in our team is putting a lot of pressure on national feeling and not losing power over your own country. One possibility looking from governing bodies’ position is that most of EU Members are threaten to lose their independent and sovereignty and become one of the states. That means Europeans countries will be governed by EU bodies, so there is a possibility that EU will become a supreme federal state.
