2-day Pre-Meeting Courses were designed to provide the core of
knowledge in behavioral/developmental/functional vision and
vision therapy and its application. These courses are invaluable for
those getting started in this field, but established practitioners also

The courses were developed by teams of COVD Fellows and COVTs
to assure the core knowledge in each area is presented and that it
is done without philosophical prejudice. While the courses are
not required to complete the certification process, attendees have
found them to be useful, enjoyable, and an interactive learning
experience. Additional information on 2-day Pre-Meeting courses
follow on this page, and pages 4 thru 7.

COURSE: Visual Information Acquisition

Course Description:
Dr. Sanet is foremost a clinician and this
course will be clinically based. The course
will cover efficient evaluation procedures
to diagnose specific problems in visual
information acquisition, educate the
patient and/or parent how these relate
to symptoms and performance, and
demonstrate efficacious therapy techniques and how they may be
best sequenced to benefit the patient.
The course will also provide tips on time saving report writing
and good communication with parents, educators and other
professionals. The course examines VT orientation, how to get
patients engaged in the therapy process, how to increase patient
compliance, completion of visits prescribed and ways to determine
the overall success of aVT program. Learning is optimized through an
interactive approach and having fun with hands-on demonstrations
of effective therapy procedures which also give feedback to patients
and parents.
If you have not previously taken an Applied Concepts course,
we suggest that you start your sequence with Visual Information
Acquisition.
Learning Objectives:
Course participants will feel more secure and confident in the
following areas:
1. Evaluation of patients with learning related vision problems
2. Optometric Vision Therapy procedures for patients with learning
related vision problems
3. Organizing time and staff to provide these specialized services
Dr. Robert B. Sanet graduated with honors from the Southern
California College of Optometry. He has served as President of the
College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Chair of the AOA
Sports Vision Section, Board Director for the Neuro-Optometric
Rehabilitation Association, International Clinical Director of the
Special Olympics Opening Eyes Program and adjunct associate
professor at the Southern California College of Optometry. He has
worked with amateur and professional athletes including the USA
Men’s and Women’s Olympic Volleyball teams, San Diego Chargers,
San Diego Padres, and LPGA Golf Professionals. Dr. Sanet is a
sought after lecturer who has presented more than 1,500 hours of
continuing education in the USA and 4,000 hours internationally.
His numerous awards include the San Diego County Optometrist
of the Year, G.N. Getman Award for Excellence in Children’s Vision
Care, COVD President’s Award, Ralph Barstow International
Award. In 1999 Dr. Sanet was named as a Distinguished Practitioner
in the National Academies of Practice.
COVD is a contributing member of the
Partnership Foundation for Optometric
Education. COVD will contribute $1 per
hour of continuing education for each full
Annual Meeting registration to support the
future of optometric education.

Integration of doctor and staff for V.T. Delivery

Course Description:
This will be a hands-on, two day course that will cover the essential
techniques needed for a doctor and his/her staff to introduce vision
therapy into a primary care office.
At the completion of this course participants will:
• Be able to identify and diagnose a wide range of vision problems
that require VT
• Be able to program and dispense VT to patients
• Be able to identify various visual skills needs that require therapy
• Be able to modify procedures for maximum effectiveness
• Be able to monitor success and commicate this to the patient
Dr. Willis C. Maples earned his B.S.
(Geography Chemistry) in 1964 from
the University of Southern Mississippi in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He earned his
Doctor of Optometry degree from the
Southern College of Optometry (1968).
Dr. Maples practiced in south Mississippi
for 12 years, specializing in children’s vision
and vision therapy. In 1979 Dr. Maples
earned a M.S. degree in Community
Health Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.
He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and is
a Board Certified Fellow in developmental vision and vision therapy by
both the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD)
and the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (FACBO).
Dr. Maples has been active for 40 years in the American Optometric
Association and has served on numerous AOA committees at the
national level. He has also been active in the Optometric Extension
Program Foundation for 40 years.
Dr. Maples has served in all the offices of the College of Optome
trists in Vision Development and has served as Chair of the
InternationalExaminationandCertificationBoard.Hewasawarded
by COVD the A. M. Skeffington Award for his contributions to the
behavioral literature in 2000. He was awarded the G. N. Getman
Award in 2006 for excellence in developmental vision and inter-
professional relations. Dr. Maples also holds the title Professor
Emeritus from Northeastern State University-Oklahoma College
of Optometry (NSU-OCO) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He retired
from NSU-OCO in 2006. At NSU, he taught for 25 years and was
chief of the vision therapy clinic for 17 of those years. Dr. Maples
recently retired in 2011 after being a Professor of Optometry at
the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee where
he was a staff doctor, taught two seminar courses and was active
in clinical research.
He has written more than 70 articles and is actively pursuing
research in the areas of visual epidemiology, refractive errors,
oculomotor dysfunction, strabismus, learning disabilities and brain
injury. He has lectured extensively in the United States, Australia,
New Zealand, Central America, South America, Asia, and Europe.
Dr. Robin Price is the founder and director
of Child Family EyeCare Center in
Pleasant Grove, Utah. He received his
Doctorate of Optometry from the
Oklahoma College of Optometry in 2004,
and then spent 2 years under the tutelage
of Dr. Patrick Pirotte in Wichita, Kansas.
Dr. Price then opened a new vision therapy
practice in Utah, and became the first
FCOVD in the state. Dr. Price received his
fellowship from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development
in 2007, and continues learning every day through continuing
education, patient care experience, and help from colleagues.

Course: Strabismus Amblyopia
David Cook, OD, FCOVD
Course Description: Optometric Evaluation and Treatment of
Strabismus and Amblyopia
Dr. David Cook is a Diplomate in the
American Academy of Optometry’s section
on Binocular Vision and Perception and
a Fellow in the College of Optometrists
in Vision Development. He has served
on both the college’s Interantional Exam
Board and on the exam committee of
the National Board of Examiner’s in
Optometry. He is the author of When Your
Child Struggles: The Myths of 20/20 Vision.
He is a nationally known speaker on vision therapy, and his articles
have appeared in the major journals of the profession. For over
thirty years, he has limited his practice to vision therapy.

Applied Concepts in Vision Therapy
COURSE: Special Populations
Celia Hindrichs, OD, FCOVD
Course Description:
Using a developmental approach this course will give the behavioral/
developmental optometrist the opportunity to learn the appropriate
history gathering, assessment and treatment of children and adults
with multiple issues. By using a developmental approach the
behavioral/developmental optometrist is able to adapt many of the
forms, techniques and treatment approaches that may be familiar to
him/her. Through the use of photos, videos of patient assessment and
treatment the practitioner will see the joys and success in working
with this population. Many will see that a greater knowledge of these
approaches will inform and improve every day practice. Review of
necessary equipment, adapted forms and treatment approaches
will be covered such that the doctor will be ready to approach this
population with the expertise required.
1) Appropriate front desk assessment to gather information effect
ively; 2) Effective history gathering for complex children with
multiple issues; 3) Appropriate behavioral and affect for working
in this population including Applied Behavioral Analysis and
DIR/Floortime; 4) Observation skills for behavioral assessment;
5) Examination techniques which allow you to gather the necessary
information to make informed decisions for treatment. All aspects
of the standard examination are explored; 6) Testing of visual
information processing in this population; 7) Review of major
disabilities seen in children with multiple issues population with
medical and ocular findings- including autism, down syndrome,
cerebral palsy, Fragile X Syndrome, mitochondrial dysfunction,
seizure disorder, cortical visual impairment and significant learning
difficulties. Included will be cases studies of patients with severe
behavioral difficulties; and 8) Treatment choices and how to modify
for this population.
Dr. Celia Hindrichs has been working with
children with multiple issues for over 33
years. She has had the opportunity to teach
at New England College of Optometry in
the specialty clinic and in the classroom,
run a private practice with multiple issues as
the specialty, and examine and teach at the
Perkins Low Vision Clinic. Dr. Hinrichs
is the staff optometrist for New England
Center for Children, a school geared
to children with significant behavioral
difficulties and autism. For the past seventeen years she has had her
own practice where she is doing optometric vision therapy every
day. Throughout her career Dr. Hinrichs has lectured, taught and
written on the needs of special populations. She continues to work
on approaches to allow this population to use their visual skills more
effectively in daily living skills and education.
Dr. Hinrichs will present an approach to the evaluation, management
and use of specific techniques she has adapted to work more
effectively when dealing with children with mitochondrial disorders,
cerebral visual impairment, Autism, Pervasive Developmental
disorder, Asperger, Cerebral Palsy, Seizure disorders, premature
births and Down Syndrome. She will review appropriate goal
adaptations needed for prescribing, lens treatment, prism therapy
and optometric vision therapy for this population.
Vision Therapy 101
Tom Headline, COVT

Course Description:
This course is designed for the entry-level vision therapist to
acquaint them with an understanding of the visual process and
the tools implemented by vision therapists under the direction of
their optometrist to address a variety of visual issues. In addition,
participants will learn specific vision therapy procedures to train
individual visual skills as well as how to modify these procedures
to the appropriate demand level for their given patient. Participants
should arrive with a basic understanding of optometric terminology
as related to refractive errors and anatomical structures of the eyes.
Our goal is that by the end of this course, you will have a better
understanding of the visual system and how to work with it. In
addition, you will develop proficiency to work with the tools of
vision therapy and learn how to develop and modify vision therapy
procedures to accommodate your patient’s level of ability.
Mr. Tom Headline worked his way through
college as a vision therapist and graduated
from San Jose State University with Great
Distinction with a Bachelor of Science in
Business Finance and two minors, one in
Spanish and one in Humanities. After
his graduation, Tom realized he wanted
to continue to make a positive impact on
people’s lives, so he continued his work as a
vision therapist and currently works in two
offices in the San Francisco Bay Area – Optometric Center for Family
Vision Care Vision Therapy in San Carlos, California with Drs.
Carole Hong, O.D. FCOVD, Macson Lee, O.D. as well as with
Dr. Ben Popilsky in Aptos, California. In 2003, Tom co-authored a
training manual for vision therapists entitled, The Vision Therapist’s
Toolkit. He also started his own vision therapy products company,
Headline Vision Enterprises, Inc. In 2006, Tom was awarded the
Certified Optometric Vision Therapist of the Year by the College
of Optometrists in Vision Development, and in 2009, he received
the Lora McGraw Award from the California Regional Vision
Therapists’ Forum. Tom performs educational seminars both locally
and internationally about the prevalence of vision problems and their
impact upon people’s daily lives. He resides in San Jose and enjoys
gardening, hiking, photography and cooking.

Vision Therapy 101, continued
Ms. Jennifer Mullen began her career in
vision therapy at EyeCare Professionals,
P.C. in Hamilton, NJ in 1993. As a young
woman somewhat lacking in direction,
being hired by Dr. Barry Tannen and Dr.
Nick Despotidis proved to be quite seren-
dipitous. With their excellent guidance, she
grew to have a passion for vision therapy
and the powerful changes it makes in peo-
ple’s lives. The drive to better serve her pa-
tients drove her to obtain her COVT certification in 1996.
For nearly 20 years she has worked with a myriad of patients including
children with learning disabilities, children with developmental
delays and ASD, and patients with TBI. All these patients have
woven a tapestry of experience, which has caused her passion for
vision therapy to spill over into a passion for getting others to love
it as much as she does! Thus she takes an active role in training new
therapists, works side by side with VT residents, and mentors new
COVT candidates. It is her hope to “spread the VT bug”, so more
lives can be changed through vision therapy.

Course Description:
A doctor’s perspective. How an optometry practice was developed in
Fort Smith Arkansas that provide’s visual rehabilitation. From how
it was started to where it is today. Procedures and protocols will be
provided on how this practice provides visual therapy with success.

Dr. Wanda Vaughn earned her Bachelor
of Science Degree in 1996 from the
University of Central Arkansas. She then
earned her Master of Science Degree from
the University of Central Arkansas n 1998
and earned her Doctor of Optometry
Degree from Northwestern State University
College of Optometry in 2004.
Dr. Vaughn graduated from optometry
school and opened a private practice in 2005, Arkansas Vision
Development Center, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Along with providing
general optometry care, Dr. Vaughn specializes in children’s vision
and visual rehabilitation. Her practice currently provides over 100
hours of therapy each week and continues to grow in its service.
Dr. Vaughn is a Board Certified Fellow in Vision Development
(FCOVD). She is a member of the American Optometric Association
and Arkansas Optometric Association. Dr. Vaughn is currently
Chair of the Arkansas Optometric Intra-Professional Committee
and Chair of the Arkansas Optometric InfantSEE® Committee. She
also serves as a committee member on many other boards within
the state of Arkansas.
She is active in her state in educating others about the importance
of the visual system and its role in learning. Dr. Vaughn spends time
providing workshops and in-services to schools and other professions
to assist in patient care.
Dr. Vaughn is married and has three sons. Outside of her passion for
developmental optometry, her life is devoted to her family.

We continue to get the word out about optometric vision therapy on
a global level. 2013 marks the first year that we have Public Service
Announcements airing on television throughout the U.S.
Public Services Announcements, Press releases, Facebook, Twitter,
Blogs, etc. COVD is getting the word out about optometric vision
therapy. Find out what we are doing and how you can use these
materials to promote vision therapy in your area.
Toni Bristol, our Public Relations Consultant, will be presenting the
“year in review.” What has happened since the last annual meeting?

Ms. Toni Bristol is a practice management
consultant who specializes in optometric
practices that provide vision therapy
services. She began consulting health care
practices in 1984. In 1988, she learned of
the widespread need for vision therapy and
decided to limit her consulting practice to
helping optometrists who include vision
therapy as one of their services.
With a background in communication, marketing, public relations
and management, Ms. Bristol has consulted over 500 optometrists
in the US, Canada and Australia. Over the past 16 years, she has
regularly contributed her expertise internationally, publishing
practice management articles in VISIONS, COVD’s newsletter, and
in COVD’s quarterly journal, Optometry Vision Development, and
most recently in VP Today.
Ms. Bristol is in charge of COVD’s National Public Relations
campaign and for the past nine years, she has served on the COVD
President’s Advisory Council.
COVD-OEPF Joint Symposium
Eye Protect Brain Project
W.C. Maples, OD, FCOVD
Special Presentation by:
Dr. Steven Devick
The first hour of this special 1½ hour
evening presentation will feature Dr. W.C.
Maples, the originator of the Eye Protect
Brain concept; he will be delivering a one
hour review lecture on Acquired Brain
Injury (ABI) and particularly among the
young athlete. He will help the attendee develop a higher sensitivity
to ABI and have a better understanding of the diagnosis of ABI. Dr.
Maples will also review therapeutic strategies including ergonomics,
lens systems and vision therapy to help the young concussed patient.
Finally he will discuss the importance of integrating patient care with
specialty areas in physiatry, neurology, physical and occupational
therapy.
The evening will conclude with Dr. Steve Devick unveiling the
collaborative presentation entitled “Eye Protect Brain”. This project
was developed by COVD with the support of SECO because of
Optometric awareness regarding the reliability of the King-Devick
Test (K-D Test) in identifying individuals who have suffered a
concussion. The project is charged with the mission to educate
school personnel and train those within schools to run the K-D Test
thereby improving identification of concussions in athletes. The
way to achieve this goal is by spreading the word and familiarizing
Optometrists with this program so they can take the message and
tools provided to their local schools and communities. This same
presentation will be given again at the SECO 2014 Meeting. We
are happy that Steve is here with us tonight to share his personal
involvement and update us on the past and current research
happening with the K-D test.

Mr. Len Scrogan
A former teacher, principal, and technology
director for the Boulder Valley Schools,
Len was named Outstanding Technology
Administrator in the state of Colorado in
2009. Len is currently a Digital Learning
Architect and author of Digital Shapeshifter
(http://bit.ly/Scrogan), a book on creative
visual teaching and learning.
His work concentrates on innovative projects in the area of 3D, visual
teaching and learning, blended learning, and technology leadership.
Len is an adjunct professor for the University of Colorado-Denver
and Lesley University. He is also a blogger, TEDx speaker, and
recognized ed-tech author and speaker. He is a co-author of the
American Optometric Association’s seminal report on 3D in the
classroom, See Well, Learn Well. Len serves as the online community
manager for LinkedIn’s Stereo 3D Media and Technology online
community of 8,000 members.
Clinical Implications of Simulated 3D
Leonard J. Press, OD, FCOVD, FAAO
Course Description:
Stereoscopic3D(S3D)technologyreliesonmanipulatingtheviewer’s
binocular perception to enhance the effects of spatial projection.
However, content producers have not yet accounted for human
factors that will influence how well the user is able to sustain S3D in
this simulated binocular environment. This presentation will review
some of the key clinical factors involved, including accommodative-
vergence interactions, asymmetric vergence, stereoscopic delay,
depth mapping, and visual stress.
Dr. Leonard Press completed a Residency
in Pediatric Optometry at the Eye Institute
of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry
and subsequently served as Chief of its
Pediatric Unit. He was recruited to be
Chief of Vision Therapy Services at the
State University of New York’s College
of Optometry, where he served for 15
years before entering practice full time as
Optometric Director of the Vision and
Learning Center in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
Dr. Press is a Diplomate in Binocular Vision and Perception of the
American Academy of Optometry and a Board Certified Fellow
of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. He is a
former President of COVD and currently serves on its Exam
Board. Dr. Press has served as President of the New Jersey Society
of Optometric Physicians and has twice been honored with their
Scientific Achievement of the Year Award. A consultant on Visual
Disabilities to the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Press
has co-authored the AOA’s Practice Guideline on Learning-Related
Vision Problems, as well as the Guideline on Amblyopia. Dr. Press
is author of three widely acclaimed textbooks and over 100 articles.

and the College of Optometrists in

Association, and the Artists of Casa Italia. He is the immediate past
editor of Optometry Vision Development and the founding co-
editor of Optometry Visual Performance. Dominick has authored
approximately 200 books, chapters, and articles and has given more
than 100 presentations worldwide. He has been active in COVD
as a student, resident, faculty member and private practitioner
by serving on or chairing several committees over the years. He
currently serves on the Easter Seal Society of Metropolitan Chicago
Medical Advisory Board.
COVD has recognized Dominick’s accomplishments by awarding
him the A. M. Skeffington Award and the President’s Award for
Professional Excellence and Dedicated Service to His Profession. He
has also been given the Leonardo Da Vinci Award for Excellence in
Medicine and is a Distinguished Practitioner (National Academies
of Practice). He is an active user of social media to spread the word
about optometric vision therapy and his blog (MainosMemos) has
been recognized as one of the top medical blogs in the country. His

Experiences with Simulated 3D in Classrooms

in sports, but stereoscopic 3D has also been making its way into
classrooms world-wide. So, what happens when 3D meets up with
live learners in schools and universities? This presentation will review

in education” pilot projects. We will also explore the opportunities

Implications of Stereoscopic 3D Viewing on Ocular
Health and Benefits: Recent Development
Shun-Nan Yang, PhD
Course Description:
The overriding concern about stereoscopic 3D viewing is its impact
on viewer’s ocular health relative to its benefits to viewing experiences.
Less known is its usage on the diagnosis of binocular disorders. In
this lecture Dr. Yang will review recent findings about the causal
relationship between aspects of S3D content and significant viewing
symptoms, and the underlying causative mechanisms. He will also
review observed perceptual/cognitive benefits and clinical usage
in S3D viewing. Recent advances in S3D technology and their
potential impact on ocular health will also be discussed.
Dr. Shun-Nan Yang received his Doctorate
of Philosophy in cognitive neurophysiology
and human-computer interaction from
the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign in 2002. Between 2002 and
2004, He was a research scientist at the
Brain Science Institute of RIKEN, Japan’s
largest and most comprehensive research
organization for basic and applied science.
His work at RIKEN mainly focused on the
behavioral and computational modeling of visual perception and
ocular control. Between 2004 and 2007, he was a research fellow at
the Smith-Kettelwell Eye Research Institute. At Smith-Kettlewell,
Dr. Yang investigated ocular decision making based on single-unit
recording of primate cortical activities. Since 2007, Dr. Yang has
been an assistant professor and currently is the Director of Research
at Vision Performance Institute at Pacific University College of
Optometry. His research focuses mainly on the vergence response to
near work and stereoscopic 3D viewing.

Dr. Willis C. Maples earned his B.S.
(Geography Chemistry) in 1964 from
the University of Southern Mississippi in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He earned his
Southern College of Optometry (1968).
Dr. Maples practiced in south Mississippi
for 12 years, specializing in children’s vision
and vision therapy. In 1979 Dr. Maples
earned a M.S. degree in Community
Health Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.
He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and is
a Board Certified Fellow in developmental vision and vision therapy by
both the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD)
and the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (FACBO).
Dr. Maples has been active for 40 years in the American Optometric
Association and has served on numerous AOA committees at the
national level. He has also been active in the Optometric Extension
Program Foundation for 40 years.
Dr. Maples has served in all the offices of the College of Optome
trists in Vision Development and has served as Chair of the
InternationalExaminationandCertificationBoard.Hewasawarded
by COVD the A. M. Skeffington Award for his contributions to the
behavioral literature in 2000. He was awarded the G. N. Getman
Award in 2006 for excellence in developmental vision and inter-
professional relations. Dr. Maples also holds the title Professor
Emeritus from Northeastern State University-Oklahoma College
of Optometry (NSU-OCO) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He retired
from NSU-OCO in 2006. At NSU, he taught for 25 years and was
chief of the vision therapy clinic for 17 of those years. Dr. Maples
recently retired in 2011 after being a Professor of Optometry at
the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee where
he was a staff doctor, taught two seminar courses and was active
in clinical research.

Geoff Heddle, OD
Vision and posture connected. This course will describe how you
can observe your patient’s posture and movements to gain a greater
understanding of your patients visual status, capabilities, and
struggles. Discussion will also cover different adjustments one can
make, with your patients, during therapy, to help improve function.

in St. Joseph, Michigan, and is in Private
Practice doing Vision Therapy in Osceola,
Indiana.
Dr. Heddle was exposed to ‘alternative’
care like Naturopathy, and Chiropractic at an early age. He has also
competed in athletics his whole life. His Optometric approach is to
try and understand the patient’s visual system in reference to how
their body/ health may be contributing, or interfering.

College of Optometrists in Vision Development, been a member
and Chairman of the San Jose Vision Therapy Seminar, member
and President of the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society, and
is currently Immediate Past Chairman of the American Optometric
Assn Sports Vision Council. His office is currently an externship
site for 3 optometry schools and he has served as adjunct professor
to 4 others in the past. Dr. Etting has been featured in numerous
magazine articles including Time, Equus, Plane and Pilot, Cycle and
Sports America. Ten years ago his office was the focus of a CNN
segment on visual problems that masquerade as ADD and ADHD.

Neuro-Motor Maturity and the Emergence of
Vision: A Look at Primitive Reflexes and Their Role
in Visual Sensory Motor Development

Course Description:
This course links the sequence of primitive reflex integration with the
sequence of vision skill development. A rationale to understanding
the importance of this neurological relationship will be presented
along with theories of how to integrate reflexes. The history of
reflex integration will be outlined while highlighting several popular
programs and theories commonly used around the world. Case
examples demonstrating how reflex integration can be used as
a motor tool to facilitate the development of visual skills will be
presented.
Attendees will gain information on how to use primitive reflex
integration motor activities as a powerful tool to facilitate the
development of oculomotor control, binocular functioning, visual
perception and vestibular functioning.

Wold Safe Fund
2013 COVD Annual Meeting
Student and Resident Travel Grants
The College of Optometrists in Vision Development Annual
Meeting Travel Grant is offered to encourage and support
optometry student and resident participation at the meeting.
The grants are provided through the Wold SAFE Fund.
COVD members donate to this fund to support student
attendance at the meeting. The number and amount of the
grants given are based on monies available in the fund each
year. This year the grants have been increased to $300 each.
While we don’t yet know the total number of grants available
this year, we are able to fund at least 23 grants.
To be eligible to receive a grant, an optometry student or
resident must:
• Be a COVD member (if not already a member, join
for free)
• Be enrolled in an optometry degree (OD) program at a
school or college of optometry.
• Submit an application and current copy of your CV. Be
sure to include any posters or papers you are presenting
at the 2013 Annual Meeting.
• After your application is received, you will be given the
title of an article to summarize.
Grant recipients will be selected based on a review of their CV
and article summary.
The 2013 COVD Annual Meeting is October 8-12, in
Orlando, Florida. Deadline for submission of applications is
11:59 pm on July 22, 2013. You will be given the title of an
article to summarize on or before July 26, 2013. The article
summary and submission of your CV is due 11:59 pm on
August 22, 2013. Decisions will be made on or before August

Course: Research on Reading, Vision, and Learning;
The Work of Harold Solan and Others
Barry Tannen, OD, FCOVD
Course Description:
In a professional career which spanned over 60 years, Harold Solan,
OD, MA was an innovator, clinician, researcher, educator, and a
tireless advocate for the critical roles of developmental optometry and
vision therapy in improving reading and learning in children. This
is not a memorial lecture; much of Harold’s work is as timely now as
when it was first reported. In this lecture, we will discuss some of the
major themes of Harold’s research, reviewing critical publication of
both his and peers. This will be woven into a summary of the major
contributions of his research both in terms of information gained
and questions suggested by his work that will need to be answered
by others.
Attendees will: 1) Have an understanding of the breadth and depth
of Dr. Solan’s research contributions; 2) Understand the major
themes of research in the various time frames of Dr. Solan’s career;
3)Understand the importance of psychometric testing and normative
values in optometric and visual perceptual testing; 4) Understand
Dr. Solan’s approach to the optometric management of reading
disability; 5) Understand the dual systems of visual processing and
their impact on reading disability; 6) Understand how vision and
attention therapy can improve visual processing and reading.
Dr. Barry Tannen received his bachelor’s
degree from Colgate University and his
Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He
has written and co-authored over 30
peer-reviewed optometric publications,
including the 1995 book “Eye Movement
Basics for the Clinician”.
Dr. Tannen is a Fellow in the College of
Optometrists in Vision Development and the American Academy of
Optometry. In 2002, he was the recipient of the New Jersey Society
of Optometric Physician’s Scientific Achievement Award. Dr.
Tannen lectures nationally and internationally on learning related
vision disorders, strabismus, amblyopia, and vision therapy.
Dr. Tannen is currently in private optometric practice in
Hamilton Square, NJ, at EyeCare Professionals, P.C. with Drs.
Nicholas Despotidis and Ivan Lee. Dr. Tannen also maintains an
appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Optometry at the
State University of New York College of Optometry, and an adjunct
faculty position at the Southern College of Optometry where he is
the Residency Director for the Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation
Private Practice Residency at EyeCare Professionals, PC.

The Fellowship and Certified Optometric Vision Therapist multiple choice examination will be administered by the
COVD International Examination and Certification Board on Monday, October 7, 2013. Oral interviews will begin
Monday, October 7 and continue through Wednesday, October 9, 2013. Candidates will receive specific notification
of time and location of their interview from the COVD International Examination and Certification Board. Formal
induction for those successfully completing the process is Saturday, October 12, 2013.

Interactive Metronome – Interactive Metronome is a tool that
enhances brain function: from talking to walking to reading and
writing. By developing brain function (improving our ability to

General Program Travel Information
REGISTRATION
The 2-day Pre-Meeting Courses, Tuesday Wednesday, October
8 9, 2013, provide 13 hours of continuing education. These
educational courses are presented simultaneously. You must select
which course you wish to attend.
The Practice Management Workshop is a one day course only
on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, and is 6.5 hours of continuing
education.
Annual Meeting Registration Fee includes admission to 22+ hours
of education sessions, the Exhibit Hall, Continental Breakfast each
day, beverage breaks, Thursday Lunch in Exhibit Hall; Friday Awards
Luncheon, and Saturday Installation/Induction Banquet. (Student,
Resident, and Guest registrations Do Not include lunches and
banquet.)
Additional tickets for meal functions, the OEPF Luncheon and
the Exhibit Hall, for guests, can be purchased separately. (Student
and Residents get one free mixer ticket.) Student Mixer and Vision
Therapist Get Together tickets can also be purchased. See the meeting

NAME BADGE
A name badge is required for admission to all events, including the
Exhibit Hall. The loan or transfer of this badge is strictly prohibited.
Violation of this policy will result in forfeiture of the right to attend,
as well as loss of all fees paid.
REFUND POLICY
Refunds of Applied Concepts Courses, Practice Management
Workshop, and Annual Meeting Registration fees, less a $75 per
person administrative cost, will be granted for requests received by
September 8, 2013. No refunds will be made for cancellations after
this date.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
Application for continuing education credit has been made to
COPE. COVD does not guarantee that any or all of the courses will
be accepted for credit. It is the responsibility of attendees to check
with their individual State Boards regarding acceptance of courses
presented.
CE hours for all ODs will be available for OE Tracker immediate
upload after each completed session. There is a 15 minute time
allotment following each session to upload the QR code - which will
be available outside the General Session room. All others needing CE
will be given a CE form to be marked for that session.
VIDEO AND AUDIO TAPING
Video taping and/or Audio taping of presentations for individual
use is not permitted. Professional digital recordings will be available
for purchase from DiGiVision.
