The Homestead Act provided settlers free land in exchange for living on the land and making improvements to it for 5 years. Passed in 1862, it aimed to promote western expansion and distribute millions of acres of public land. This law allowed any US citizen or intended citizen to claim up to 160 acres of federal land for farming purposes.
