2. THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
The Roman Republic was created when in 509
BC the Etruscan Kings were forced out of
Rome. The Roman Republic was divided into 2
Classes. There were the Patricians and the
Plebeians. The Patricians were Nobles who
owned large estates and wanted to stay rich.
The Plebeians were ordinary citizens and had
jobs like soldiers and craftsmen. The patricians
and the Plebeians made up the citizens
assembly. The assembly discussed new Laws
and elected consuls. Unfortunately, the
Patricians vote normally won in the assembly.
There were 2 consuls per year elected. They
had to agree before final decisions could be
made. The magistrates collected taxes and
were often judges. When magistrates retired
they became members of the senate. The senate
debated new laws and gave advice to the
consuls.
To be a citizen of the Roman Empire you must
have been the child of a citizen or been born in
Rome. Slaves could not be citizens no matter
where they were born. The citizen had many
rights that non-citizens didn’t have. Non-
citizens could sometimes become citizens. If
they worked very hard for the Romans they
might be granted a special award of
citizenship. Likewise it was possible for slaves
