Some of you here today are new to Crossref, so we wanted to recap ways to get more involved with Crossref and there are several.
Help us effect change in the scholarly community
Board Participation: Something to think about over the next year is to express an interest to serve on Crossref’s board. (We are looking for people who know about scholarly communications and want to be part of our future. If you have some ideas about the international Crossref community, we’d LOVE to hear from you.)
The boards responsibilities are to: Set strategic direction of the organization
Provide financial oversight
Approve new policies and services -
An example would be - the Inclusion of preprints in the Crossref metadata; and the approval to develop Event Data (which is beta is live now actually - it will track online activity from multiple sources) to give you an idea
Any publisher member can express interest in serving on the Board. It’s 3 year term and 1/3 of the board is eligible for election each year. The nominating committee puts forward a slate in September of each year for the entire membership to vote on. Voting take place online and election results are announced at the annual business meeting during the Crossref LIVE conference each November, which this year will be held in Singapore.
How can you vote?
On September 28th, your organization’s designated voting contact will receive an email with concise instructions on how to vote. An additional email will be sent with a username and password along with a link to our online voting platform. It is important to make sure your voting contact is up-to-date.
Want to add your voice?
We are accepting independent nominations until 7 November 2017. Organizations interested in standing as an independent candidate should contact me by this date with the endorsements of ten other Crossref members.
The election itself will be held at LIVE17 Singapore, our annual meeting, on 14 November 2017. Look out for our blog with news of the results.
———
Q’s: What does Nominating Committee do
discuss change, criteria, and potential candidates and, ensuring a fair representation of membership. The Committee is made up of three board members not up for election, and two non-board members.
Submit your interest via an online form. (http://bit.ly/crossrefboardinterest)
If board participation is not for you, there are advisory groups and working groups
We have Advisory groups to get input and advice from our members for established services or content types
Some advisory groups would be for: books, similarity check, crossmark, funder registry, event data
There is a chair and a staff facilitator they work together to set agendas, organize calls, and keeps the group on track to fulfill its purpose…..
—-
For something even less formal, There are working groups
They don’t always have a chair.
They are usually set up to discuss
new topics,
scope a specific idea
or oversee prototypes and pilots that could develop into new services.
They either disband when the work is finished or become an advisory group if and when the board approves the idea or prototype, feature or content type.
Some of our working groups Linked clinical trials, text and data mining, standards….to give you an idea.
———
Help us with beta testing - we always looking for those willing to help us test out a new product or service.
Write a Guest Blog Post - share how you use our API or other services
One of our guiding principals is to have a broad and fair representation from our members, large and small, from all around the world.
The message today is: We would love for you to make yourself available.
If this is something of interest to your or you would like more detail you can go to https://www.crossref.org/working-groups/ or send an email to feedback@crossref.org
Crossref Sponsoring Affiliates in Turkey:
We work with a growing number of Sponsoring Affiliates. These are members who work directly with us in order to provide administrative, billing, technical and language support to publishers and societies. In turn, we’re keen to support these organizations too, by running LIVE events and other outreach with them and listening to their feedback on what they need from us.
Smaller organizations may be able to join via a Sponsoring Affiliate to take advantage of the local support they can offer. Our current Sponsoring Affiliates are in Turkey are listed here.
Communicating with our members
Communicating with our members – we do this in a variety of ways:
Webinars like this one! A great way to find out more about the various Crossref services. We also run quarterly community webinars. These sessions include speakers on a range of strategic issues, and we give updates on Crossref initiatives in development.
LIVE events - free-to-attend, one day, regional events, providing a tailored program of activities which include information on the key concepts of Crossref, the services we offer and our future plans. In the past year we have held LIVE local events in Brazil, Beijing, Boston, Seoul and most recently London. Next year we are aiming to be even more ambitious, hoping to expand our activities to a number of different countries around the world.
Upcoming plans: Things we have in the works include a community space where our member can discuss issues between themselves, problem solve and keep up-to-date with Crossref news.
We also plan on launching our ambassador program next year - trusted and valued Crossref contacts with a great enthusiasm and belief in the work Crossref does and who would like to share that more widely in their country/region or within their interest group. Some of the activities we foresee our ambassadors undertaking are running webinars and online events such as this, engaging in our online community, writing blog posts, or contributing to a Crossref newsletter, helping with local LIVE events, helping with production and translation of Crossref material, conducting training and representing Crossref at industry conferences in their region.
Staying up-to-date:
We share information with members and the community on twitter via @crossreforg and @crossrefsupport
