occasion of Independence . It has two red stripes on top and
bottom and a blue background. In the center of the flag is the
coat of arms of Belize.

Until the arrival of Europeans , it was
inhabited by the Maya.
In the middle of the seventeenth century
English woodsmen came to shore. The
Spaniards had not come to this area .
Belize became independent in 1981 .
9. Monuments
Xunantunich is the name given to the ruins of an
ancient city maya located in the territory
of Belize , about 50 miles north of Belize City and
ten kilometers from the coast of the Caribbean
Sea .

10. Visits a day to the island are common
as hiking, diving and bird watching
are spectacular. It is a protected area
of land and surrounding waters,
which acts as a bird sanctuary.
