Dear CFO Bensen,
It’s time to stop using a clown to push junk
food on children. It is bad for our children’s health,
and it is bad for your corporation’s bottom line.
We, the undersigned—parents, educators, faith
leaders, investors, and health professionals from the
greater Chicagoland area and across the country—
call on you to retire Ronald and end all marketing
to children. We speak for tens of thousands more
who have called on McDonald’s to end the predatory
marketing practices driving today’s health crisis of
obesity and diet-related disease among children.
As financial analysts have noted, McDonald’s is
rapidly losing millennials and parents who are
choosing healthier options. As a result, last quarter,
your corporation had a staggering 30 percent drop
in net income, as well as a 3.3 percent drop in global
comparable sales. Your refusal to change course—
even in the face of growing public pressure—is
creating significant financial risk and reputational
liability for the corporation. As CFO, your job is to
protect the corporation and its shareholders from this
kind of liability.
It’s time you heed this call and stop targeting kids—
for your corporation’s bottom line and the health of
our children.
