One of the most common conditions in otolaryngology, allergic rhinitis, otherwise known
as hay fever or “allergies,” occurs when the immune system attacks certain particles
inside the body. The immune response to these particles, or allergens, triggers a wide
variety of symptoms, including sneezing. Many patients experience allergies for several
years, though their symptoms may decrease in severity over time.

While some allergies are merely annoying, others can be severe and sometimes
dangerous. To identify more serious allergies, a physician may conduct a skin test or
order lab tests. These tests can determine what a patient is allergic to so these triggers
