Top 10 OSHA Violations of 2018
The top 10 OSHA violations of the year (through September 30) were
announced on Oct. 23. The lone newcomer on this year's list is Personal
Protective and Lifesaving Equipment – Eye and Face Protection, with
1,536 violations. It bumped Electrical – Wiring Methods off the list. OSHA
encourages employers to use the list as a guide of what to look for in their
own workplaces.

NIOSH: Research Shows How to Reduce Hazards of
Concrete Drilling
Concrete drilling is often dusty, loud and physically exhausting. It also can
expose workers to lung-damaging silica dust as well as hand vibration and
noise levels well above recommended limits. Now, two NIOSH-funded

OSHA Updates National Emphasis Program on
Excavation and Trenching Safety
OSHA has updated the National Emphasis Program on trenching safety
and preventing excavation collapses, and will increase education and
enforcement efforts. The trenching safety emphasis program began
October 1 with a three-month period of education and prevention
outreach. Enforcement activities will begin after the outreach period.

New Vehicle Parking and Backing Safety Materials
Available from NETS
The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) has released new
tools in their Drive Safely Work Week campaign. The latest module
focuses on parking and backing, and includes activities that reinforce safe-
driving messages yet don’t take much time from the work day.

OSHA Fines Top $7 Million in 3rd Quarter of 2018
Federal OSHA has released information on 28 significant fines (over
$100,000) totaling $7,008,394 from July to September, 2018. The highest
penalty was more than $795,000, and the top five accounted for nearly
$2.6 million. Common citations included confined space and electrical
hazards, PPE violations and machine hazards.

OSHA is initiating a Site-Specific Targeting program using injury and illness information electronically submitted by
employers for calendar year 2016. The program will target workplaces with high injury rates. OSHA will inspect

NIOSH has developed a new resource for employers and workers dealing with the opioid crisis. The new factsheet,
Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdose in the Workplace: Information for Employers and Workers¸ is a
resource for workplaces that are considering implementing a naloxone program. Workers, clients, customers and
visitors may be at risk of an opioid overdose in a workplace. This factsheet lists steps for employers to consider
when deciding if they should establish a naloxone program to reverse overdoses. Learn more.
New Online Resources for Control of Hazardous Energy in Manufacturing
A new website from the National Occupational Research Agenda Manufacturing Sector Council provides
information to help businesses safeguard employees from the release of hazardous energy during service and
maintenance activities. The new site provides resources to help start, improve or maintain lockout/tagout safety

New OSHA Emphasis Program for Ammonium Nitrate and Anhydrous Ammonia
OSHA has launched a new program to address hazards from exposure to fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate and
agricultural anhydrous ammonium. The Regional Emphasis Program will be active in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana,
Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. It emphasizes safety obligations under existing OSHA standards. A
three-month period of education and prevention outreach began October 1. Learn more.

OSHA Fines Top $7 Million in 3rd Quarter of 2018 Federal OSHA has released information on 28 significant fines (over $100,000) totaling $7,008,394 from July to September, 2018. The highest penalty was more than $795,000, and the top five accounted for nearly $2.6 million. Common citations included confined space and electrical hazards, PPE violations and machine hazards. The new factsheet, Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdose in the Workplace: Information for Employers and Workers¸ is a resource for workplaces that are considering implementing a naloxone program. Workers, clients, customers and visitors may be at risk of an opioid overdose in a workplace. This factsheet lists steps for employers to consider when deciding if they should establish a naloxone program to reverse overdoses. Learn more. New Online Resources for Control of Hazardous Energy in Manufacturing A new website from the National Occupational Research Agenda Manufacturing Sector Council provides information to help businesses safeguard employees from the release of hazardous energy during service and maintenance activities. New OSHA Emphasis Program for Ammonium Nitrate and Anhydrous Ammonia OSHA has launched a new program to address hazards from exposure to fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate and agricultural anhydrous ammonium. The Regional Emphasis Program will be active in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. It emphasizes safety obligations under existing OSHA standards.
