2. MPO 2050 Major
Thoroughfare Concept
• Purpose is to plan major transportation
network needed to serve Brazos County in
2050 when County population is
anticipated to have doubled.
• It is a planning concept, not set roadway
alignments. Implementation will be based
on available funding and transportation
priorities based on future development
patterns and regional/state traffic needs.
• Brazos County does not have authority to
create its own thoroughfare plan but can
adopt MPO’s plan and has done so.
• MPO Thoroughfare Concept consists of
minor arterial classifications and above,
does not include major or minor collector
roadways.

Public Engagement
• October 2016 – February 2017 – 8 open
houses held around Brazos County.
Hundreds of participants and thousands of
comments received.
• March 2017 – revised Concept presented
at public meeting
• May 2017 – further refinements presented
at public meeting
• June 2017 – 2050 Thoroughfare Concept
adopted by MPO Policy Board

• June 2017 – Workshop presentations to
Planning & Zoning Commission and City
Council regarding overview of MPO
Thoroughfare Concept.
• September 2017 – Contracted with Kimley-
Horn to analyze potential removal of
select thoroughfares in Medical District
area east of SH 6.

• September 12, 2017 – Public meeting with
Wellborn community regarding potential
relocation of South Dowling railroad
crossing.
• October 17, 2017 – Overview presentation
to Council Transportation & Mobility
Committee.
• November 6, 2017 – Bicycle and pedestrian
amendments presented to Bicycle,
Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board
and unanimously recommended approval.
• November 16, 2017 – Planning & Zoning
Commission considered the amendments
and unanimously recommended approval.

25. Recommendations
• Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board recommended
unanimous approval of the bicycle and pedestrian amendments at their
November 6, 2017 meeting.
• Planning & Zoning Commission recommended unanimous approval of
the amendments at their November 16, 2017 meeting.
