The North Face was opened in 1966 by
Doug Tompkins
In the 1980 they turned a focus on to
skiing
While continuing to call the Bay Area of
California home
From the opening of a single storefront in
1966 to now being a global year round
retailer
Founder
Douglas Tompkins
Founded the company as a mail
order camping equipment
The North Face quickly became
popular due to their tents having
a flexible rod that at that time no
other retailer had done.
Tomkpin later sold the company to
the co-founder also ex-wife

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow Hierarchy of Needs
Theory over a period of many years as a
general theory of human motivation
Organizations use the Maslow Hierarchy of
Needs to address the issues of employees
with hopes to increase productivity.
The North Face is one of the organizations that
uses the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs by
starting from the bottom then working to
the top.
Physocologial Needs
Psychological Needs are the most
basic needs of people on the Maslow’s
chart.
The wages that The North Face pays
it’s employees is above the minimum
wage which in retrospect allows for
them to fulfill these needs.

Safety Needs
Safety Needs are the second most
important on Maslow’s Hierarchy. The
North Face meets these needs by
once again providing livable wages.
They also fulfill this need by providing
safe working condition for their
employees.
Belongingness and Love Needs
This Stage is also referred to as the
Affiliation Stage
This stage focuses on the
relationships between the
organization and workers.
The North Face allows for a
employees to move up in the
company with promotions which gives
a sense of belonging.

behind the desk or inside
the store and interact with
their colleagues.

Esteem needs are met through

have become more and established
themselve.

amount of opportunity, along with

women of color between the ages of 18-24 on
an introductory and immersive trip into the

natural resource management by providing
young women with a meaningful wilderness
experience.”
