- Worldwide Smartphone shipments will cross the 1 billion mark in 2016, reaching 1,095 million, and account for 51 percent of total handset shipments in that year. - The increasing penetration of Smartphones bodes well for both operators and handset vendors. It helps an operator to get subscribers onto bundled plans, which strengthens ARPU, and reduces churn. Furthermore, migration of subscribers from feature phones and basic handsets to Smartphones helps handset vendors strengthen their revenue. - Smartphones accounted for around 31 percent of total handset shipments during the full year 2011. This figure is expected to reach 39.1 percent in 2012. Moreover, by 2016, more than half (51 percent) of total handset shipments will be Smartphones. - It is estimated that the number of Smartphone users will cross the 3-billion mark by 2016, up from 770 million as of end-2011. However, Non-Smartphone users will continue to overshadow Smartphone users year-on-year, and would be a substantial category during the same period. It is estimated that the Non-Smartphone user base that stood at 5.20 billion as of end-2011, will reach 5.41 billion by end- 2016, after peaking at 5.48 billion by end-2014.

The worldwide mobile market has enjoyed continued significant growth in the past few years. Worldwide, the overall industry is anticipated to continue its growth phase in the near future. As the penetration of mobile services rose year-on-year and markets became more saturated, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) started to leverage other modes of communication beyond voice (such as SMS, MMS and Mobile E-mail), in order to stabilise their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and strengthen their overall value proposition. In addition, another stream of revenue was simultaneously explored that included mobile infotainment and entertainment services, such as news updates, games and music, which became known as Value Added Services (VAS). Being one of the most dynamic industries, the wireless sector has never been short of innovation. Even as the overall market was riding on the success of new products –including messaging and VAS, leading operators started offering other data services and payment services. This move was supported by mobile handset vendors who launched advanced devices with greater computing power and better operating systems (OS). As the industry has matured and voice services have become commoditised, MNOs worldwide switched focus ever more on to mobile data services, mobile app downloads and mobile payment services.

- In terms of mobile revenues, the worldwide mobile market stood at 718.4 billion at end-2006. It is expected to increase at a strong rate and reach 1,094.9 by end-2012. - Advanced and emerging countries have different arrangements for sharing revenue generated from premium SMS services. In developed countries, content owners and aggregators get a higher share than their counterparts in developing countries. In most of the emerging markets, the operators share is quite high (sometimes as high as 60 percent), as is the case in India and the Philippines. However, there are a few exceptions. In China, operators get only 20-30 percent of the total revenue through premium SMS services, while aggregators and content owners share the remainder. - The worldwide mobile handset market is experiencing tremendous growth. It is estimated that approximately 1,144 million handsets were shipped to customers worldwide in FY-2007, and the market is expected to be worth USD 166.1 billion. In 2006, the number of handsets sold worldwide exceeded 990 million. This number is expected to grow at a CAGR of just over 10.8 percent from 2006 to 2011. - The revenue sharing arrangement in advanced markets such as the US and the UK is in favour of content providers. However, in emerging markets, such as India, operators account for a larger share.

M2M is rapidly growing and since its early days different “standard” protocols have emerged (e.g. OMA-DM, TR-069, MQTT, …) or are emerging (e.g. CoAP or Lightweight M2M). Understanding which protocol to use for which application can be intimidating, therefore we propose to give an overview of these protocols to help you understand their goals and characteristics. We’ll present common M2M use cases and why they usually require more than just one protocol ; we will also see whether CoAP associated with Lightweight M2M allows to forge “one protocol to rule them all”.
