Artist: Erica Gray Title: Spores Medium: mounting board, poly fibre, felt fabric, recycles car tyre and bike inner tubes Size: 80cm x 35cm x 35cm Art description A soft sculpture made early 2011 and inspired by the miserable wet weather Queensland had to endure. The use of recycled tyre inner tubes conjures up feelings of mildew and black floral growths that start to appear when the water subsides and leaves behind our familiar spaces transformed into a new and damp alien world. Artist bio Having over 25 years' experience within the fashion industry, various studies in design, pattern making, garment production and a keen interest in textile arts have led Erica to her passion for sculpture, in particular soft sculpture. Artist: Deborah Nicholls Title: Trace Medium: carbon on paper Size: 90 x 71 Art description Trace is defined as visible mark, such as a footprint, made or left by the passage of a person, animal, or thing or evidence or an indication of the former presence or existence of something. We all impact on our world in different ways when we are gone all that remains is a trace of who we were. Our aim would be that our trace is individual and positive. Artist bio Deborah Nicholls is a Brisbane based artist who is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at Griffith University. She creates and exhibits paintings, collages and sculptural artworks in various styles. Her work is continually evolving, incorporating new technology as well as contemporary and traditional media. Currently works are centred on the notion of our existence and how this complex notion might be expressed through art making.

9. Artist: Ann Copp Title: Transitory Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 54cm x 100cm Art description Based on visual assumptions we characterise and box what we see. Our first impressions of a stranger is based on the visual, with the majority of us living in cities we live and work in close proximity to one another but do we really know each other do we stop and take the time to connect with the people that surround us. My paintings capture the atmosphere of city life and the people who occupy them. Through light, movement, and distortion I have captured glimpses of the unseen personalities, which we pass by on the street. My work is a portrayal of movement, the illusions of motion and light depicting transparent distorted images, thus creating an almost abstract composition of reality which is unseen with the naked eye, captured in a matrix of time and space, while exploring modern life's transitory nature, chaotic movement and the fusion of the people in our city. Artist bio Born in Brisbane, grew up not realising my true vocation, my early studies led to a certificate of Merit in Business training in 1988. Ten years later my passion for creativity took control and I set off in a new direction. In 1999 I studied Interior Decoration obtaining a Certificate IV in Design Services at TAFE Brisbane. The following year I moved to the Gold Coast and continued my studies at Griffith University, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Design Studies, double Major in (Three Dimensional Design & Visual Culture). In 2004 I completed a course in Flash Animation at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE. I am currently in my final year at Griffith University Queensland College of Art Brisbane, 2011 Candidate, Bachelor of Fine Art, Painting Major. It has been a long road but finally I have found my true calling.

Artist: Fintan Magee Title: Lost Again Medium: Acrylic, Spray and oil on canvas Size: 100x100cms Art description A simple mixed media painting, from a body of work that uses images from popular culture in various states of waste and decay. The piece deals with both loss and renewal on a personal level while highlighting broader issues of waste and consumption in society. Artist bio Magee grew up in Brisbane, Australia and is an active member in the cities long standing graffiti and street art scene. His vibrant walls can be found on streets and abandoned buildings across Australia, Europe and the US. He has exhibited in cities across Australia and has previously been selected for the churchie, Lethbridge and prometheus art prizes. 12. Artist: Patricia Linehan Title: Pond Medium: Oil on Curtain Fabric Size: 76.5 x 102cm Art description Much of my work is based on the figure and portraiture. Recently, the intention of my work has been to capture the freedom experienced by children which often seems unattainable to adults. In Pond I have depicted a young girl bathed in sunlight, peering into the water below the stepping stones on which she stands. The water itself is undefined and vague, a space to be filled by the child's imagination. There is no limit to what she could see beneath the water. Pond has been painted on curtain fabric, the pattern of which can be seen faintly through the sheen of the paint. The patterned fabric is reminiscent of the home and the confines of domestic life and the everyday environments we surround ourselves with. Here, this environment and its limitations are juxtaposed with the infinite possibilities of the child's imagination. Artist bio I completed a Bachelor of Art (Visual) at the ANU Canberra School of Art in 2004, where I specialised in Painting and Sculpture. I moved to Brisbane in 2006. I lived in France in 2007 and have spent some time travelling which has greatly influenced and informed my work to date. In 2008 I completed a Graduate Diploma of Education and I am currently teaching Visual Art to Students at a local secondary college.

This is very much a self portrait- this is what I do (painting) and where (at home) and in my pyjamas as I usually am. Artist: Melinda Willis Title: Liminal Space 2, 2010 Medium: Screen Printed, Fused and Cold-worked Glass; UV Cured Inkjet Print on Glass; Cold-worked Mirror and Float Glass Installed Size: H. 87cm, W. 220cm, D. 25cm Art description Liminal Space 2 explores my ongoing interest in the phenomena of glass in the urban environment and its reflective qualities as a perceptual experience. In contemporary architecture, sheet glass has become a predominant material used in the construction of the urban environment and has varying effects on the way that we experience the space around us. The reflectivity of the material lends itself to a constant and poetic dialogue with its surroundings. The complex relationships, of layered images on reflective surfaces, have compelled me to seek a more detailed account of this phenomenon. Making known the relationships between the static, moving, compressed, obliquely angled, abstract, and sequential is my aim. Artist bio I graduated from South Australian School of Art, the University of South Australia in 2008. During this time I developed an interest in investigating the effect of reflection in glass in the urban landscape. My work was selected for inclusion as a finalist for the international Bullseye E-Merge competition in 2008 and in 2009; my work entitled Within/Without was selected for the international peer reviewed journal, New Glass Review. After graduating from the South Australian School of Art I relocated to Canberra to undertake Honours at the Australian National University. I graduated with First Class Honours and was awarded the 2010 Canberra Glassworks Residency Award, which I will undertake in the latter part of this year. Currently, I am developing my emerging art practice as a studio hirer in the Canberra Glassworks.

Artist: Kate Vassallo Title: One hour in a gallery Medium: Inkjet Print on poster paper Size: 169cm x 135 cm Art description This image is documentation from a series of performances entitled 'One-Hour Studio'. In these performances we see the body of the artist occupying different spaces as artist studios. In this work the artist inhabits an empty 'white-cube' gallery. The body is dormant in the vast space, alluding to the mind activating while the space is still. This is a large, unframed, photographic print ideally hung with archival tabs and pinned to the wall. Artist bio Kate Vassallo graduated from the Australian National University School of Art in 2010, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), First Class with University Medal. She has had her first solo exhibition in Canberra and exhibited in numerous group shows, most recently HATCHED 2011: National Graduate Exhibition, held annually at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. Vassallo's work attempts to find ways of preserving the tangible experience of making. She undertakes a deconstruction of Performance Documentation, attempting to find a medium with which ephemeral moments can be adequately represented once they have passed. Artist: Ben Mitchell Title: Blackhead Medium: Oil on board Size: 93.5 x 105 x 3cm Art description 'Blackhead' is part of a series exploring the breakdown of Polaroid film emulsion using oil paint on board as the medium. The work is a metaphor for bodily decay. Artist bio Ben Mitchell is a Perth based artist working in 2d and 3d forms. He is a graduate of Edith Cowan University where he was an Honours student in 2005. Since then he has exhibited in Lecce Italy at Primopiano Gallery as well as shown works at the Fremantle Arts Centre, Spectrum Gallery, Central Institute of Technology and Kurb Galleries in Perth, Western Australia.

Artist: Richard Hammer Title: Sesquipedalium Medium: Stainless Steel, Sheoak Size: 600H, 500W, 500D, (mm) Art description Sesquipedalium is a kinetic work that responds chaotically to movement of air. It makes visual the variability of the atmosphere in which we live. The interaction between the atmosphere and everything else comes alive. It awakens our sense of wonder at ordinary everyday air. Busy lives pause to gaze at something different. Near an open window on a windy day it moves continually. Nearby doors opening and closing will shift it. At some sites it's just still. Artist bio Richard Hammer CV (ARTS) Interests My first interest was chaotic, kinetic, wind-driven sculpture. I like the live, unpredictable, almost-interactive aspects. I'm now branching out, exploring other concepts and ideas, including doing some sculpture units at TAFE with Tony Jones. Recent Exhibitor, Bassendean's Sandy Beach Sculpture Park Exhibition, WA, March 2010 and March 2011. Exhibitor, Castaways, Rockingham, WA, May 2009, May 2010 and May 2011. I was also a featured artist in the Spring Festival of Arts, Fremantle Arts Centre (1982). Various drawings were sold to private collectors, and the Australian Computer Society commissioned a drawing which was presented to Sir Charles Court as he opened the annual convention. Education My degrees include a B.A., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Mathematics. In undergraduate art class I made nonsense machines from wood, that actually worked. Artist bio Biography Susan Coral Radaich (nee Simmons) was born in the mining town of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Her father and grandfathers were all miners that worked in the Goldfields. Reminiscing upon her childhood memories of exploring old mine diggings, family picnics in the bush and walks amongst the Australian landscape, Susan expresses in her work a visual diary. It is a journey for you to experience the changes in the natural landscape of the region to the commencement of corporate mining. Through sculptural layering, her paintings express beautiful open-pits and slips. Washes of colour and fine brush markings create depth and atmosphere. Texture and colour display the energetic surfaces of the harsh Australian terrain which is rendered with rich colours that delivers a contemporary finish. It is there from her memories that she has developed as an emerging visual artist specializing in the life of mining in the Goldfields. I hope the individual viewer experiences the strong qualities of her works at an emotional level. Her Future aspirations are to continue in the same direction painting in the remote regions of Western Australia. 28. Artist: Judy Rogers Title: Rob Diptych Medium: Mixed Media on Board Size: 90x45cm Art description Robert Cleworth is my friend. He has recently moved away to New South Wales and I was quite devastated to lose him as a good friend, mentor and colleague. I wanted to keep him around a bit longer; this is why I made his portrait. I visited him in Newcastle and the sitting for the portrait took place on his balcony in the morning sunshine after a night of family dinner, running around after kids and conversation. I used the triptych format to emphasize some of Rob's personal qualities and bring out his dynamic character. He is, under a very private persona, a warm end engaging man with a good sense of humour. Artist bio Judy Rogers was born in Hungary, moved to Perth in 1995. She works in the blend(er) gallery, Joondalup as a curator and has an artist studio in the Tresillian Art Centre in Nedlands. She has participated in more than 120 solo and group exhibitions in Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland. She has worked on major public art commissions and she has received considerable recognition and awards. 29. Artist: Judy Rogers Title: Marriage Diptych Medium: Mixed Media on Board Size: 120x60cm Art description This work is a representation of my marriage. The white shirt is the institution and the hands represent the dynamics of the relationship. The fabric is sometimes gently drawn to cover and protect and sometimes violently pulled when it becomes suffocating. The bodies are intertwined and joined; they are merging together as one body. 34. Artist: Elizabeth Christie Title: Scruffy at the Beach Medium: Oil Paint on MDF Size: 900x600x3.0 Art description I painted this work, in March this year. It was a photograph i took of my dog down at the beach earlier in the year which i loved and would work well as a painting. I used Water mixable oils and applied them with a palette knife to the mdf board in a very thick, gestural way. Artist bio My name is Liz, I am eighteen years old, and currently studying visual arts at UniSA where i plan to specialise in painting next semester when we start our specialisation. I also work part time at Target, which i love. With the money i earn form work, i try to save some, spend some on social activities and the rest helps me to purchase all the paints and other materials needed for uni - i'm finding oil paint very expensive!!. I have always loved art, especially painting. In high school I studyed Art, Carft and Design-the three art subjects which were offered until year twelve when i could only do Visual Arts Studies because of restricted subjects. I achieved a 20/20 for my practical work in year twelve, and a 17/20 overall. My second year twelve major (a large oil painting of the slums in buenos aires) was selected to be apart of the SACE art show, which made me very proud! I also won the school art prize for 'excellence' in 2009 (year twelve). Whilst at the moment, i am happy living the 'poor uni student life', i hope to travel the world when i finish studying. I particularly love London and Paris and can not wait to travel there. I love life and try to live it to the full, which i think comes through in some of my works which could be seen as 'happy snaps'. At the moment i am working on a series of paintings for uni, based on 'life' but more specifically, the 'teenaged life'. This is made up of a range of images that portray life, and memories.

It is about the way we as humans seem to have a deep drive to make things more convenient for ourselves, but in this quest we have ultimately created a poisonous lifestyle. Most of what we consume is laden with toxic ingredients and chemicals, yet we choose to stay ignorant of this in pursuit of short term gratification. The subjects in the series are all using items or products of convenience, and are unaware that they are releasing the toxins from their bodies. In this image the subject is driving a car, and the green condensation on the window represents her breathing out the toxic fumes. Artist bio KRISTIAN T MUMFORD b.1980 Born in country South Australia, Mumford is third generation Australian artist and son of Jenni Mumford, astronomer, gardener and painter. At the age of 14, he decided that art was going to be his chosen profession. Kristian was fortunate to study informally with Jenni Mumford and Scottish grandfather Gerry Hough OAM. Much of what Kristian paints or makes relates to the beauty he loves of a persons inner most being. His paintings a cease searching and revelation of forces benign. A versatile painter, Mumford's artistic output includes landscapes and one or two still lifes, however he feels especially compelled to paint the most classical of artistic subjects, the human figure. The result is work that emits a rhythmic, quasi-electric energy, underpinned by a sense of mathematical precision. Inspired in part by the immediacy of architectural and urban spaces in the modern environment and the interaction between surface and structure in modern glass-and-steel construction, Stevens' earlier works explored the limits of three-dimensional space with rectilinear division. I understand that we don't generally think of viruses as beautiful, but viewed objectively they are exquisite and unique. Brown Infection was created to initiate discussion about the global impact of a viral epidemic and how media distortion can affect people on a local level. If we don't want our communities to become a casualty, there are some important questions we need to ask ourselves. From what sources do we trust information about what is dangerous? What checks are placed upon these sources? How do we redefine our own circumstances when hearing of epidemics in media? Do we cease to become part of a community because of perceived threats to our well-being? I think that isolationist ideas have the ability to spread through communities like viruses and can be damaging on a number of levels. Acknowledging that there can be more genetic variation in a family group of chimpanzees than the entire human population; how different are we really? Is the human genome so homogenous that we face real danger from a viral epidemic? Or does the real threat come from our voluntary isolation and lack of empathy? Artist bio Isla has been making things since she was a child and has vivid memories of her seven-year-old self, enameling copper coins with a blowtorch. She now makes contemporary glass jewellery and artworks from her garden studio in Auckland, New Zealand. Glass is both subject and object in Isla's work and its chemical and physical properties fascinate her. It is fluid whilst unyielding, delicate whilst impenetrable. Glass can transform from liquid to solid in an instant, while still retaining the illusion of movement. Isla's process consists of making finely crafted glass beads, melted with a torch according to traditional Italian methods. Although the techniques she uses are ancient, their application is contemporary and she is constantly experimenting with the nature and chemistry of glass. She says "Lampworking is an ancient and magical process, a chemistry that borders on alchemy and as an artist find its lure irresistible." In her current body of work, Isla explores the relationship between the virus and its host community. Creating a tension between the artworks beauty and what it represents, Isla presents a thoughtful view of the world we live in.

The Title 'Strange Attractor' alludes to chaos theory, and the notion of certain uncertainty. It's also a reference to my new style of expression and my overall passion to be a painter. The aim of my art is to create an awareness of uncertainty, patterns, fluidity, simplicity and the notion of embracing change, A challenge with charm. Artist bio Born in 1976, I grew up on a small farm in the rural community of Waimauku in the western outskirts of Auckland. Strong connections were still maintained to other art mediums throughout this time. After extensive travel through Europe, the Middle East and Asia I returned to New Zealand. Artist: Kathryn Stevens Title: Elevation #1 Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 600mm x 500mm Art description Informed by a combination of painting theory architecture and engineering, Kathryn Stevens' work explores the twin painterly ideals of depth and palette. Stevens' work investigates the representation of depth through an implied three-dimensional structure on a two-dimensional plane. The paintings also explore the effect of variation in the tonal range of a colour on the structure present on the canvas. The result is work that emits a rhythmic, quasi-electric energy, underpinned by a sense of mathematical precision. Inspired in part by the immediacy of architectural and urban spaces in the modern environment and the interaction between surface and structure in modern glass-and-steel construction, Stevens' earlier works explored the limits of three-dimensional space with rectilinear division. With the introduction of curved line and the use of tonal blocks of colour to suggest depth and to further energise the composition, Stevens' later works warp this limited space and lend fluidity to her expression of three-dimensional structure. Artist bio Artist: Kathryn Stevens was born in the King Country town of Te Kuiti in 1965 and lived there until 1983 when she moved to Auckland to study civil engineering. In 1996, having worked in the film and television industry as a makeup artist for ten years, Stevens again enrolled at University and graduated from the elam school of fine arts in 1999 with a BFA in painting. Since then Stevens has exhibited regularly in Auckland and Christchurch and has been a finalist in the Wallace art awards, the BMW art awards and the Waikato art awards. In her painting Stevens is interested in the way that space and depth can be suggested, and are perceived. Stevens painting, though abstract, suggests construction grids, walls, windows, or paved floors. In each of the paintings Stevens sets up a different possibility of space and depth using the linear grid and the colour that it lies in

Artist: Chris Dennis Title: Albatorss Hunting Medium: Acrylic and Mixed Media on Panel Size: 61cm x 76cm Art description My paintings are perhaps best described as 'Narrative expressionism' or 'internalized portraiture'. The juxtaposition of a static figure (often possessing the head of either a fish or a bird) in an active setting hints at the internal, through the depiction of the external. The stories behind these 'Therianthropic' pieces are deliberately ambiguous. The incongruity yet immediacy of the imagery fuel the viewer's preconceptions. They invite the witness to create their own narrative and bring to mind facets or emotions that maybe more difficult to confront if not disguised behind a mask. Artist bio Prior to his fine art career, Chris Dennis was admitted to Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design to study natural history illustration. This classical training is evident in his current therianthropic work. After completing his BA (Hons) at the University of Wolverhampton he relocated to the United States, and in 2000 earned his MFA from the University of Art in San Francisco. The search for pattern and unity reflects the endless human condition of meaningful connection in a world we assume is made for us but in our darkest moments realise is not. Artist bio Andrew committed to photography over 25 years ago. From courses at Ilam Fine Art School at Canterbury University and Christchurch Polytechnic, there have been exhibitions and commercial work commissions interspersed with personal practice and a wide interest in all visual art media. More recently he has tutored in digital photography at the National College of Design and Technology and at Massey University Fine Arts School. His work features the frequent use of bold colour and strong compositions. Landscapes and urban abstractions have become a consistent theme as well as environmental portraiture and mixed media work, combining traditional and digital photography with sculpture and other fine art techniques to create a hybridization of 20th Century work inspired by the cubist and surrealist movements. In 2006 an unusual black and white shot from a wedding was entered in the New Zealand National Library Documentary Photographic competition. The print was declared winner and the prize money was spent on yet more photographic equipment. Eventually digital raised its game and was worthy of investing in. A move to a full digital setup in the last two years was realized. The latest technologies for scanning, ink jet printing and Internet storage and display have been investigated and forms the future of Andrew's work going forward. But traditional photography is not ignored. Medium and large format cameras have been retained and are still used for personal and commercial work.

During her high school years, her aptitude in fine arts manifested in acrylic painting which her works were recognised among practitioners that she was awarded numerous prizes including the South China Morning Post: Student Artist of the Year 2004 - the most prestigious award to student artist in Hong Kong. In her studies in Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was awarded the Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008, she continued to explore her interest in acrylic but also were exposed in a variety of media, including ceramics which she was obsessed in. In the succeeding year, she further her studies in Central Saint Martins, where she studied with Sally O'Reilly and Alex Landrum. Enlightened by them, she researched and encountered dream, trauma, memories, and their forms in arts. Her recent works were inspired and was developed based on these investigations and was revealed on a spectrum of mixed medias including pencil colour on paper, dye transferred print on carved wood and Polaroid. Her arts had been popular among galleries and was constantly exhibited. Between 2006 - 2009, her works were featured in 10 group or solo exhibitions in Hong Kong and London. In January 2010, her collection was selected by at myartspace as online feature artist for the season. More recently, she was selected as Finalist in Red Mansion Art Prize and Mishcon De Reva Art Prize. Tina currently works and resides in London and Hong Kong.

Artist: Wong Chun Hei Title: Torii Medium: Oil on Canvas Size: 140 cm (H) x 210 cm (W) Art description I often walk around slowly inside the video game world until noticing a beautiful landscape scenery, then I will start painting it. Numbers of people have asked me this question, 'Why don't you just paint the "real" landscape rather than this fictitious space?' My answer is that the paintings I done are about the world more realistic than the "real" one. Today, we can easily find people playing with their portable video games when they are on train or on the road. I can judge that those people would get closer with the natural area in video game's world than the one which our bodies can touch with. And although people who play the video games can go through many places in it, their mind of participation in game are bound by the original game rules, thus it is passive in nature. What I am now doing is to set up my own game rule inside the fictitious world. I prefer choosing action games, such as car racing games which require the player to drive fast to compete with others, I will just drive slowly and look for pretty scenery, my works ' Toril', 'Sunflower" and 'The lake' are painted with this rule. Artist: Damon Tong Title: Hey Medium: Artists' name cards (32 designs, 200 each), collage on wall Size: 243cm x 457cm Art description in January 2010 I was invited to participated a group show which featured 32 artists from Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The group show was a part of a festival which stressed the importance of cultural exchange between 2 cities. Failing to know most of the artists of the list and willing to stop myself from embarrassment on the opening night. I started to "google" every artists background, yet all these "research" became the medium of my work. I used the information I found from the internet to design the name cards for every artists on the show. Half of the name cards I produced were used to create a collage work with a hallow Chinese character of "hey" ("hello" equivalent for Southern Chinese) in the middle. The other half of the name cards were given to each exhibiting artists during the opening night as gifts. Artist bio Damon TONG obtained his BA (Fine Arts) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) / The Art School, Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2008 with a major in painting. He served as exhibition co-ordinator for "White Tube" of Hong Kong Art School between 2005 and 2009. On the same year at 2009 he and his friend together established "Rental United", a collective which focuses on collaborative experimentation. He focuses on connections between segmentation and domestic objects through repetitive arrangement of paintings.

Artist: Lee Kai Chung Title: The Lost Roads no.14 Medium: Pigment print Size: 150 x 98 cm Art description A road / passage is defined by the daily behavior and habit of human being, on the other hand, the human existence transcends the merely geographic location and transforms it from "place" into "space". Michel de Certeau first creates the term "Narrative action", which relates to the human behavior that can generate stories. He claims that is a practice of organizing and developing space effectively, in the sense that it rephrases the "place" in a particular time frame and makes it relational. In the past thirty years, the Hong Kong government has been pruning over 300 roads in the record of Highways department, the official reason is large scale construction projects, including domestic housing and commercial buildings. The post-colonial city planning forces the "space" to push away history, as a result, stories are lost, and consequently human behavior is restrained by the stereotype of metropolitan city. "The Lost Roads" is a series of photographs, in which I document the lost roads sites, and present the relationship between the missing and existing stories. The non-durable quality of the photographs enhances the idea of this piece as a city monument. Artist bio Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lee was graduated in BA Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is fascinated by the relationship of time, space and human beings. His recent photography project, The Lost Roads, is about the physical, social and contextual transformation of space, and he further investigate how local inhabitants react to the gradual change of the post-colonial government policy. The sequence of his project work involves scrupulous planning, research and execution, and yet he does not reject randomness and chance encounter throughout the art making process. He is currently working on mockumentary project, Unwelcome Visitors, which is about the history of his home and some unseen visitors that he has been living with him since he was born.

Through the act of painting, I record my seeing and experiences, which sometimes are even from my dreams of it. Artist bio Tina Lam ATCL(piano) ATCL(violin) BA(hons)(CUHK) MA(CSM) Tina Lam was born in Hong Kong in 1984. She was trained to be a musician since she was 6, learning violin and piano. She was subsequently awarded two ATCL degrees by the Trinity College of Music in London at the age 19, for her proficiency in violin and piano performance. During her high school years, her aptitude in fine arts manifested in acrylic painting which her works were recognised among practitioners that she was awarded numerous prizes including the South China Morning Post: Student Artist of the Year 2004 - the most prestigious award to student artist in Hong Kong. In her studies in Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was awarded the Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008, she continued to explore her interest in acrylic but also were exposed in a variety of media, including ceramics which she was obsessed in. In the succeeding year, she further her studies in Central Saint Martins, where she studied with Sally O'Reilly and Alex Landrum. Apple being one of the biggest players in the technology industry, has great influence with the growth of technology research and development. However, the marketing tactics and how products are brought into the society really takes advantage of different human psychological conditions. These conditions include materialism and never ending desires. This painting is a scenario where if scientists and researchers were to invent a functional time machine, the purpose of it would to be able to promote and sell the iPhone. Artist bio Lau Yin Kan is now a Fine Art undergraduate students at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He plans to pursue in the art industry with his western painting passion. His paintings are realistic but adds a twist of fantasy to help straighten and portray current societal issues.

Medium: Yarn & acrylic stuffing Size: Art installation Art description This artwork is part of an ongoing-series that I've been creating in the last few years - knitted sculptures which evoke memories through created objects, drawn from my own childhood & events from my personal relationships. "This Is Why I Paint. . . . ." is an instance of this, reminding myself of why I have chosen to take this path in life - that of an artist, and none other. Artist bio Born in Hong Kong in 1981, Thomas C. Chung is an Australian artist based in Scandinavia. In 2004, Chung completed his BFA at the College Of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales. For the past 6 years, he has received various artist-in-residency opportunities, travelling to New London (USA), Gothenburg (Sweden), Kemijärvi (Finland), and most recently in Drammen (Norway). Since 2008, Chung has exhibited in 5 solo exhibitions and will be showing in 2011 at the Lands Museum (Norway), as well as at Kunsthuset Kabuso (Norway). My practice draws inspiration from folk tales, childhood memories and events from my personal relationships, exploring the importance of all our Memories.

78. Artist: Jane Bennett Title: Industrial Cathedral Mortlake Medium: ink,gouache on paper Size: 104 x 124 cm Art description I paint the damaged, derelict, doomed & disappeared. Through my art I have explored many industrial sites in Sydney that were off limits to the public :Cockatoo Island; Eveleigh Railway Workshops; industrial sites in Pyrmont & Rozelle; the wharves of Barangaroo, Woolloomooloo, Walsh Bay, Glebe Island & White Bay. The astounding rate of Sydney's recent development has both fascinated & repelled me. My challenge is painting to an unknown but inevitable time limit as buildings are demolished as fast as I can paint them. I have an uncanny instinct for selecting subjects that are about to vanish. Ironically the attraction of these places is their poignant impermanence. As a plein air painter, I set up my easel by the side of the road, on windswept rooftops or on demolition sites.The challenges of painting outdoors include distractions from workmen & passers-by, constantly changing light & Sydney's notoriously unpredictable weather. Almost everything that I have painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. My paintings show the cycle of abandonment,decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape - testament to the ending of an era. 'Industrial Cathedral Mortlake', an old gasworks, was a decayed & vandalized relic with a skeletal roof & a crazy zig-zag of buttresses holding up the crumbling walls. For all that it was once a strictly functional industrial building, this building combined the haunting melancholy of a bombed out Gothic cathedral with a whiff of the surrealism of Salvador Dali.
