EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Challenge
Place a bet in Italy, and you’re not the only one hanging on the outcome. The
government oversees each wager, online or over the counter. If it can’t see the bet
in real time, the wager’s not allowed. So the network needs to be ultra-fast. Or the
gaming firm can lose cash. As a major player in the market, Eurobet Italia has to take
this seriously.
“We’ve achieved our vision of becoming a top-three sports bookmaker by market
share,” says CIO and online MD, Paolo Bazzocchi. “Staying there means finding new
ways to improve service in betting shops and online.”
So far Eurobet Italia has been doing well. Part of the Gala Coral Group, one of Europe’s
top betting and gaming firms, the company had opened 360 outlets by 2009. It’s now
on the way to 900.
Rapid growth has made low network latency more vital than ever, so customers don’t
see delays. For the first 360 shops, a standard Cisco® network was fine. As the
business grew, a more advanced network was needed.
Solution
Working with trusted advisor Byte Works Sistemi, a Cisco Premier Certified Partner,
Eurobet decided to transform its shops using a Cisco Enterprise Networks Architecture
design. The installation began at the end of 2013.
The new solution includes remote monitoring. It handles faults automatically. And uses
3G line cards to link to the mobile network.
By September 2014, around 480 new betting shops had been completed. Bazzocchi
says: “There was no question about choosing Cisco equipment. We know that Cisco,
for our needs, is absolutely the best choice.”

Customer Case Study
Results
Eurobet has taken the in-shop customer experience to a higher level. That’s due
mainly to improved network performance, which Byte Works Sistemi measures
on an ongoing basis. The findings show latency improved by around 10 percent.
Packet loss has been cut by 15 percent.
And it’s much easier to manage the network. Previously, if a switch went down,
it had to be reset or powered up again manually. That could take minutes, or in
extreme cases, hours. Once the engineer was in attendance, the average time to
recovery was up to 90 seconds. Now the process is automatic.
“Faults are resolved over four-times more quickly,” says Bazzocchi. “And
administration effort has been cut by 50 percent. This means the same staff can deal
with twice as many endpoints. Not only that, some shops can rely on 3G backup.” As
a result, Eurobet has nearly doubled the resilience of its network.
The 3G cards in the routers also accelerate business growth. “If we need to open a
new shop, we simply slot the card in. And we’re operational,” Bazzocchi says. “DSL
takes at least a couple of weeks to install. Now we can do the job in a day.”
The new technology allows Eurobet to be more flexible and creative with the
positioning of screens in the shops. Before, they had to be physically connected
to the network. With multiple graphics cards powering up to seven monitors.
“Now we use Android mini-PCs and connect them wirelessly,” says Bazzocchi.
“Having a router that can make it easier to connect to these android mini-PCs is
very important.”
