The next phase of the documentation was develop and undertake an assessment of the markers. This is the first of a three page form we developed for this purpose. This first page recorded the inscription and description of each marker.
The second and third pages of the survey record the actual conditions of markers and these were done by trained personnel from out office. Our goal for this phase of the work was to identify the primary conservation challenges facing American Cemetery Association, to assist in developing a prioritized conservation plan for the monuments, and to provide a documentation foundation that would assist them in obtaining monies and personnel to conserve the site.
The final stage of this phase is the creation of a database that incorporated both the graphic and written documentation that will be accessible to the public. The access database is approx. 90% complete and we are exploring the possibility of creating an interactive map in GIS that would allow one to call up all the information on a marker by clicking on it.
