TIPS & BEST PRACTICES
1. SET EXPECTATIONS AT THE START
In the first meeting, we suggest
covering:
• How much time you can both
invest into the relationship
• What you as the mentor can
help with
• Your preferred mode of
communication, and how and
where you’ll meet
• Your mentee’s expectations
2. DEVELOP CAPABILITIES
Much of mentoring is about
developing capabilities. Begin
creating strategies to meet
challenges. Ideas:
• Create short- and long-term
goals
• Assess skills and identify
development areas
• Help the mentee monitor
performance and refocus
3. PROVIDE & RECEIVE PERSPECTIVE
Often, good mentors find
perspective changes the most
valuable part of the relationship.
Try to:
• Broaden the mentee’s
perspective of the
organization
• Ask thought-provoking
questions
• Identify resources and missed
opportunities
4. INSPIRE
Good mentors take the
mentee’s eagerness and turn it
into real excitement. Inspire
your mentee to improve by:
• Challenging the mentee to
rise above the usual
• Showing the mentee how to
behave in a way that
inspires others
• Modelling attitudes and
behaviors consistent with
company values
5. GIVE & RECEIVE FEEDBACK
Feedback is key to a successful
mentoring relationship. Here are
our tips for feedback:
• Give specific, immediate, and
private feedback
• Offer useful suggestions to
try next time
• Uphold confidentiality and
strive for mutual respect
