The intern helped with various parts of a solar concentrator project including building the framework, testing water flow through a radiator, constructing a parabolic reflector to test solar cells, and building a solar tracker and weather dome. The intern learned how to use power tools like a drill, lathe, and milling machine to construct the frameworks. They also learned how to use CAD software to design and get dimensions for the structures built.

The casting of parts by pouring molten metal into a mold has been a popular and efficient way to make parts for some time. However, despite the wide spread use of this technology, it can still be a time intensive and costly endeavor for one to undertake if the proper equipment and facilities are not present. In addition, even in the event that the resources are readily available, it is still remarkably likely that a casted part will be of substandard quality or will have a disqualifying defect. It is for this reason that our team was solicited by Dr. P.A. Simionescu to construct a device that will allow the user to use the centrifugal casting method to make castings.

The Aim of this thesis work is to reduce weight and cost of the injection mold by removing unwanted materials and using low cost materials at non-stress region areas. A general large size model will be prepared to design the mold structure using theoretical method. Complete level of mold parts and assembly will be prepared to conduct analysis. Structural analysis will be conducted on mould to find stress locations and non-effective locations. Modifications will be done on mold according to obtained results.

Products made with dies range from simple paper clips to complex pieces used in advanced technology. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
