The document discusses Mitchell's relaxation technique, which uses diaphragmatic breathing and isotonic muscle contractions based on reciprocal inhibition. It can be used to treat respiratory, orthopedic, post-natal, and psychiatric conditions. The technique promotes relaxation and reduces muscle tension and pain perception. It is effective for pre-labor Braxton Hicks contractions and realigning stress-related postures by moving to a new position and increasing awareness of body position. Mitchell's relaxation technique can also help conditions involving a high tone pelvic floor like painful bladder syndrome.
4. Mitchell relaxation technique
! Mitchell relaxation technique also known a physiological relaxation
technique
! Mitchell’s physiological relaxation technique is based on
reciprocal inhibition and
involves diaphragmatic breathing
and a series of ordered isotonic contractions.
5. ! The Mitchell Method is based on the following principles:
• Tightening or contracting muscles results in movement.
• Movement causes repositioning of the joints and limbs.
• When we are awake, the brain will register a change in body position through
muscle, joint and skin sensation.
• The brain is only aware of the movement it causes. Movements are controlled
by the nervous system; if one group of muscles is ‘instructed’ to tighten, the
opposite group of muscles for that action receives an ‘instruction’ to relax.
6. ! Mitchell (1977) suggests that physiological relaxation can be
used to treat
respiratory,
orthopaedic,
post-natal and
psychiatric conditions
7. USES OF MITCHELL RELAXATION TECHNIQUE
! POSTURAL REALIGNMENT – of stress related position called punching position
This position commonly adopted while working at a desk forward head ,clenched
jaw rounded shoulders, bent elbows and crossed legs
increase muscle tension
release epinephrine and norepinephrine
enlarge adrenal and lymphatic glands
physical illness and death (seyle 1956)
10. MITCHELL RELXATION TECHNIQUE IN PREGNANCY
! Its is used in prelabour ,while experiencing BRAXTON’S HICK CONTRACTION
! The approach was successful in conserving the mother’s energy during the
first stage ready for the ‘hardest work she ever do’.
11. POSITION
! Move away from the position of stress
! Stop
! Be aware of and feel the new position

! Painful bladder syndrome (PBS)
! Interstitial cystitis (IC)
! Anal pain
! Vaginisimus
! Painful intercourse
! Other issues of high tone pelvic floor
