As the Oconaluftee passes through Cherokee, it is split by an amazing, grassy island – the Oconaluftee Islands Park – sheltered by canopies of oak and sycamore. The water ranges from ankle deep for toddlers to chest deep on Mom and Dad, and flows over soft sand and flat, time-smoothed river rocks shed from the world's oldest mountains. These rocks are the perfect size and weight for kids to build dams, or encircle Dad as he chills out in the shallows. This island is both physical and metaphorical. On this cozy island, the world at large just ... disappears. Museum of the Cherokee Indian To truly understand a people, you need to see the world through their eyes. At the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, you will experience just that, through knowledgeable hosts, special group programs and award-winning permanent exhibits. Chimney Rock Park This stunning mountain attraction features a variety of family-friendly hiking trails suited for all fitness levels. Some take you along the cliffs past unusual rock formations, overlooks and bridges to 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls. Others lead through the woods where you'll discover large, whimsical hand-crafted animal sculptures and an infinite variety of birds and wildflowers. If you're not up for all the activity, a 26-story elevator inside the mountain can help get you to the top! Dillsboro River Company Rafting & Tubing Dillsboro River Company offers Rafting Trips and Tubing Rentals on the Tuckaseegee 'Tuck' River. As a Class I-II whitewater river, it's a wonderful option for families looking for a fun-filled day. It is also dam controlled, making it warmer than most others. The following activities are offered with the Go Blue Ridge Card: Guide-Assisted Rafting: Pilot your own raft as Dillboro's team of guides leads you down the river. Reservations required. Duration: 2-2 1/2 hours. Raft & Duck Rentals: For solo fun, check out the Ducks (inflatable Kayaks) which hold 1-2 people each. Or make it a family adventure with a raft that can accommodate 4-5 people. Duration: 2-2 1/2 hours. Tubing Adventure: Perfect for those little ones just wanting to be on the river.
