“The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Emma Approved” both
created spin-off series featuring characters from the show, as a
way of adding to characterization to the series’ main players.
Notably, the writers of “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” published
two books from the perspectives of Lizzie and Lydia Bennet,
taking place during the series.
The trend of adapting classical works of media began with “The
Lizzie Bennet Diaries” in 2012. Originally concieved by producer
Hank Green as a love letter of sorts to his wife Katherine, the vlog
series presented as a project by Lizzie Bennet quickly went viral,
with the series’s first episode currently having over two million views
on YouTube. In addition to creating a video series presenting the
main conflict from the classic novel, Green, producer/writer/director
Bernie Su, and writers Katie Rorick, Tracy Bitterolf, and Tamara
Krinsky created an extensive “transmedia” experience: not only
the original “Lizzie Bennet” video series, but also Twitter accounts
for their characters that interacted with viewers, four spin-off vlog
series, two books, and a sequel of sorts in the miniseries “Welcome
to Sanditon.” One of the first spiritual successors of “Lizzie Bennet,”
“The Autobiography of Jane Eyre,” based on the Charlotte Bronte
novel, debuted on YouTube close to the end of “Lizzie Bennet.” This
series was different from its predecessor, as “Jane Eyre” had a much
smaller creative team, cast, and budget, but it paved the way for future
productions by smaller or student-led web series.
The creative team behind “Lizzie Bennet,” rebranded as Pemberley
Digital, next produced an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel “Emma,”
this time extending the transmedia experience to a fashion blog
covering the outfits worn by the titular Ms. Woodhouse. For their
efforts, both “Lizzie Bennet” and “Emma Approved” won Creative
Arts Emmy Awards for Original Interactive Programs. “Lizzie
Bennet” also won two Streamy awards.
After this outstanding success at adapting classical novels to web
series, many groups across the globe tried their hand at creating
adaptations of previously worn-out material. The groups included
more professional production companies, such as Cherrydale
Productions (“The March Family Letters” and “All for One”) and
Epic Robot TV (“The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy”);
allegiances between production companies and their distributers, like
Pemberley Digital with PBS Digital Studios (“Frankenstein, MD”)
and Smokebomb Entertainment with U by Kotex and Kinda TV
(“Carmilla”); and student-created projects, including “Green Gables
Fables,” “Jules and Monty,” and “Nothing Much to Do.”
Some series even combined multiple classical media sources into one
cohesive narrative, such as “Classic Alice,” where the central Alice
is a graduate student who explores literature like “The Odyssey,”
“Macbeth,” and “Persuasion.”
Adapting classical media to web series also allows for an exploration of
current topics, such as media like “Carmilla,” “All for One,” and “The
March Family Letters” exploring gender identity and sexuality, and
“Lizzie Bennet” addressing Internet privacy and familial relationships.
