Importance of eating the right kind of food
1. IMPORTANCE OF EATING THE RIGHT KIND OF FOOD
Healthy eating is comprised of a
wide variety of foods with balanced
meals that range with
carbohydrates, proteins and fat. I've
learned that being healthy is
something you have to really want to
do and work hard at to achieve.
Even if you have a furnace for a
metabolism so you can eat crap and
stay skinny, skinny doesn't always
mean healthy.
2. Your nutritional goals should
work towards incorporating the
following elements: Eat at least
five servings of fruits and
vegetables per day, choose a
diet that is low in saturated fat,
cholesterol, and moderate in
total fat, salt and sugar, choose
a variety of grains daily,
especially whole grains, eat a
wide variety of foods, including
foods from every food group,
balance the calories you eat with
those you burn. Be sure to see
the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans. This comprehensive
guide will help you set goals in
line with current national
recommendations.
For me, the frozen food route
works best when trying to lose
weight because the portions are
controlled and it is so much
easier to cook. Whether you want
to lose weight, lower cholesterol
or blood pressure, feel better, or
set a better example for your
family, its good to set a realistic
goal (once you reach it you can
always set another one). A good
goal to strive for is drinking half
an ounce of liquid (preferably
water) for every pound of your
body weight.
3. Hypertension,
coronary heart
disease and
diabetes are all
preventable, in part,
by a lifelong
healthy diet. Poor
nutrition in old age
can evoke images
of a frail pensioner
prying open a can
of cat food.
"Good nutrition and a
healthy diet are one of the
most overlooked areas for
healthy aging,"
He is the director of
the National Policy
and Resource Center
on Nutrition and
Aging at University of
Southern California
Berkeley.
