- There’s no single blueprint for SAP migrations that works for all organizations. Every migration is unique and has its own unique challenges. It can be difficult to find and hire people who are experts in SAP, and who have been through a similar transformation SAP is the backbone of many organizations. Any downtime in SAP can be catastrophic for the whole business It’s not just downtime. Errors in an SAP system, or errors in the data, can propagate quickly to many internal and external systems. Maintaining integrity is paramount, and requires extensive testing. And data must be secured, and comply with data protection regulations.
- SAP environments are regulated, requiring traceability and governance throughout the SDLC SAP UI has proprietary attributes, within both SAP GUI, SAP UI5 and SAP Fiori, which require deep technical knowhow to test SAP landscapes include an eco-system of applications, creating dependencies that are slowing down dev, test and integration activities. The communication protocols between SAP and other systems are often proprietary such as iDoc and RFC, which most testing tools don’t support, and require specialist knowledge. As SAP IT teams adopt DevOps, they face a unique challenge of managing a slow moving system of record, ie. the back office, in parallel with a fast moving system of engagement, ie. the front-end, which today usually runs on a variety of mobile devices, cloud platforms, and other web-based systems. SAP development activities are shifting towards the SAP Cloud Platform (SCP), which also requires specialized knowledge and expertise.
- Even a relatively simple SAP implementation has many parts, multiple technologies, and integrations. There are elements of technological challenges, and elements of managing the work and interactions between all of these parts and the people who work on them.
- Here’s an actual example. This is the topology of a gas company with a significant presence in Europe. When you start to examine it, you notice that each of the boxes that represent a system is actually a front for multiple interfaces, each of which must be managed, tested, and supported. By my count, there are over 135 interfaces. SAP implementation and transformation touches almost every part of an organization. It’s fundamental to the organization’s day-to-day running, and its ultimate success. Businesses today rely on SAP, and can’t afford to have any downtime or errors in their SAP systems.
- We’ve seen some of the challenges of the SAP transformation.

- At a high level, SAP Solution Manager is where the definitions of the business processes are maintained. And through the integration and synchronization between ALM and ALM Octane, all teams get end-to-end visibility into the state of quality, and the development pipelines.
- SAP Solution Manager has many capabilities to help customers with their SAP implementation. ALM extends these capabilities by integrating tightly with Solution Manager to deliver test management, change control management, and business process testing to ensure that the testers know what to test, and ensure that service hasn’t been inadvertently interrupted by a rogue change.

- If we take a look back at the example topology that we saw before, we can see that if we want to test SAP PI system in the middle, we will need to ensure that all of the other systems are connected and running. But running a performance test on production systems can put unnecessary load on them, which may cause a performance degradation and user dissatisfaction. So ideally, we’d like to isolate the part we’re testing from the production systems. This is where Service Virtualization comes into play.
- By virtualizing these systems, and simulating their behavior, they will continue to work as normal in production, and will be effectively disconnected from the system under test. But, the system under test is unaware of that, because Service Virtualization can faithfully emulate their behavior. The system under test behaves as it would in production, and none of the production systems are affected by the test. Once the test is successfully completed, and any issues or defects resolved, we can deploy to production and engage the real systems.
