All Things Bright and Beautiful – Solar Makes
Local Veterinarian Smile
by Tina Boniface - March 31, 2016
Marty Butley contacted us to design a custom 20kW ground mounted array that integrated aesthetically
with his landscape and fence line. He sought such a large system in order to meet the energy needs of his
veterinarian business as well as his future acquisition of an electric vehicle. We were able to meet his very
strict objectives with our unique and custom built ground mounted array and 60 SunPower SPR-327, high
efficiency modules. Since the installation in December 2014, he has been running his operation on solar
energy and is now driving on sunshine as well.

What initially motivated you to consider a solar electric or PV systemfor your home?
Installing solar to power our home was not a financial decision. We were not motivated by saving
money although we do save over $2500 per year. It was the satisfaction (and magic) of knowing that all
of our electric and transportation needs (we have a fully electric car) are provided by the sun. It was to
support the technology, create a system that is attractive and blends in with the topography and
landscaping, promote the concept to our friends and people driving by, and do our part for energy
independence and the fight against global warming. Important in our decision was that the finished
product will last well over 20 years with minimal maintenance, and the energy required to produce the
panels will be paid back in the first year of operation.

What allowed you to move forward on deciding to invest in a PV system?
The substantial federal tax break as well as finding a contractor that was able and willing to make the
system to our specifications at a price we could afford.
How long have you had your systemand are you glad you made the decision to do it?
15 months – the system works perfectly,we couldn’t be more pleased.
How has your PV systembenefitted you?
I look out the door every morning and it makes me smile. I look at my electric bill every month and I am
amazed. It really isn’t just a sculpture. It actually works.
Has it worked like you expectedit to? Please elaborate.
So far it has been perfect. Snow melts and drops off the panels usually within a day.
Are you happy with IPS’s performance in working with you and delivering as you expected?
We discovered early on there are a large number of solar contractors in this area to choose from. We
thoroughly investigated 5 or 6, and actually hired and subsequently fired one contractor before ending up
with IPS. If cost is your only consideration, and it is a cookie cutter roof top system you are interested in,
the estimate from IPS may not be the lowest. If you want a more complicated product such as ours, IPS
was able to engineer the system from scratch, build their own mounts, use the best products, communicate
effectively, identify with the customer’s needs, pass inspection and finish on time.
What would you like to say to someone considering going solar? / what words of wisdom might you
have for someone?
Go for it! You won’t regret it.
