Keynote presentation that discusses and provides examples of decolonial praxis in the heritage sector. This was presented for taught and research postgraduates. The main objective was to present possible pathways to implement decolonial theory and praxis within Design using Cultural Heritage as case studies.

Decoloniality seeks to make
visible, open up, and advance
radically distinct perspectives and
positionalities that displace
Western rationality as the only
framework and possibility of
existence, analysis and thought.

*Breaking colonialism
(1) geo-political influences,
(2) European and Western phenomenology and existentialism (geo-historical), and
(3) the convergence of technology and knowledge systems in which current Western,
and particularly Anglo-centres of research and education, have produced a
‘universal’ set of knowledge that is widely accepted (geo-cultural) (Mignolo 2002).
Up to 80% of the world’s research on
the history of slavery comes from the
USA, 10% from Brazil, followed by Great
Britain (commonly linked to the USA),
Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy,
and the Baltic States

[ Latin America ]… is the land that gave
initiation, substance, and form to the
coloniality of power, its system of social
classification based on the idea of race of
”conquerors over “conquered”, and its
structural foundation tied to modernity and
Eurocentred capitalism.
