2. IC Journey
Embedding Strategy and Innovation into
The Core of the Organization through:
- Excelled Interdependence
- Renewing Core Business Concepts
- Illuminating Competencies
- Challenging Processes
- Building an Innovation Pipeline
- Inspiring People
The Purpose
3. IC Journey
The Plan is centered around delivering benefits
in the following areas:
- Strategy Setting (establishing new growth / improvement
directions)
- Opportunity Identification (Unearthing specific possibilities)
- Capability Development (creating people with ability and tools
to ensure an ongoing portfolio of innovation)
The Focus
4. IC Journey
The engagement in the journey towards
uncovering innovation and collaboration will
be guided by:
- Seek innovation at the level of the business model.
- Listen to new voices.
- Work from future back.
- Diverge, then converge.
- To get some new answers, ask some new questions through
lenses into your business.
- Move opportunities through the innovation pipeline (explained
later).
- Evaluate new opportunities using different criteria.
- Embed innovation through practice.
- Instill a passion for creating the future.
- Build capability by systematically creating a culture of
innovation.

Innovation
5. IC Journey
The IC - Journey requires intense hands-on work - interacting
with customers, vendors, competitors and other employees.
To Develop an end to end innovation process capability
(from the front end of generating new ideas to the tail
end of translating it into reality in the market) one can’t
compress the learning experience. One certainly cannot
achieve this in the classroom alone.
How do we embed innovation into an organization?
IC - Journey
“Catch
some
fish and
also teach
people
how to
fish.”
Not… But…
Classroom Training. Learning by doing.
Top management edicts. Participatory change process.
Substitute-brain consultants. Self directed discovery.
Random brainstorming. Directed and disciplined
opportunity development.
7. IC Journey
- A Leadership Boot Camp where senior management will be
immersed in the overall approach. This will be combined with
an intense program on ‘collaboration and interdependence.’
- Post this a 3-4 day Boot Camp for all IC-Journey Participants.
Highlights:
- A very stretched emotional and cognitive process.
- Exercises designed to incorporate minority opinions.
- Experiences to enable people to deal with the emotional
journey ahead.
- Long hours, exhausting.
- Constant challenge to push ‘own’ abilities continuously.
- Participating in unfamiliar areas.
- Experiencing and feeling the stress of the process.
Immersion
8. IC Journey
- Discovery phase is designed to gain new insights and from
asking new questions internally and externally to the
company.
- This will include elements of learning and unlearning.
- Teams to be formed to discover business from a variety of
perspectives. Each perspective is termed as a ‘lens’.
- There should be five lens groups.
- The process will be closely monitored, guided and facilitated
with regular meetings.
Discovery
9. IC Journey
1- Consumer Insight - Externally focused team with a goal of
identifying insights about unmet needs and customer
frustrations in the marketplace.
2- Orthodox- This team to interview various executives inside
and outside to identify ‘limiting beliefs’ - beliefs that may or
may not be true but guide the course of action and selection
of opportunities within the company. The objective is to
expose assumptions and beliefs that could blind innovation
and collaboration opportunities.
3- Discontinuities- Trend surfing and defining confluence of
trends which would change the rules of business landscape in
areas of strategic interest. That is what major discontinuous
changes might be in the future.
Discovery - Lens Groups
10. IC Journey
4- Industry Mapping - Mapping out competitors within the
industry, reporting back on both the traditional and non
traditional competitors. This to identify ‘market gaps’ or
‘spaces’ that present business opportunities.
5- Core Competencies- This team to ask questions about the
core competencies of the organization. This to primarily
create a catalog of strengths that will drive real, tangible
competitive advantage for the company. This may be
achieved through interviews with customers, vendors,
employees, distributors, industry analysts and senior
management.
Discovery - Lens Groups
11. IC Journey
The Innovation Lab will be designed to share insights
acquired by each ‘lens’ group during the Discovery phase and
use this insight to generate solutions to action.
- All discoveries will be cross-examined in brainstorming
sessions.
- Participants to keep switching groups to ‘unscramble ideas’
and generate solutions.
- Towards the end, these will be organized into clusters.
- Four or five clusters can be chosen on the bass of being the
most promising areas for further exploration and action.
The Innovation Lab
12. IC Journey
To synthesize best information for creating ‘action plans’ for
the selected domains.
- Conduct action model elaboration backed by sound
investigation and research.
- People to be switched out of ‘lens’ teams to actual venture
teams.
- Mapping out 100 Day Plans to test thinking.
- Conclude with an ‘Executive Review Board’ critique session.
That is taking a pessimist view to eradicate inconsistencies.
Action Lab
13. IC Journey5th January 2009
- Launching Actions / 100 Day experiments, whichever
applicable, to test and measure acceptance by customers,
assess revenue opportunities, get a closer look at the real
environment and learn more about key factors of success.
- Senior executives to serve as a ‘review board’ - throughout
the innovation process. Some members to keep moving in
and out.
- This phase to conclude with ‘final’ presentations to conclude
which innovations to persist with based on test results and
applicability and investment.
