QUARTERLY VETERAN PROFILE
Earnest Dixon stopped by the AMVETS Career Center
in December 2015 to fill out an intake form and try to
find some help searching for a new job position within
the Washington DC Metro Area. Mr. Dixon had applied
to various job openings and was invited to several job
interviews. But it was a slow process, and he was
missing out on valuable family time and being there
for his daughters during an impressionable time of
their lives. We focused on finding new job leads that
Mr. Dixon otherwise would not come across. In
addition to expanding his job search network and
shaping up his resume. Due to the financial struggles
and strain of living commuting back and forth from
Pennsylvania to Maryland, Mr. Dixon needed
professional attire. He was very appreciative and
happy with the suit and other assistance that he
received from the AMVETS Career Center. Through the
efforts of the Career Center Coach, Mr. Dixon was
presented an offer of employment from the
Washington National Records Center as a Vault
Monitor in Washington, DC. This opportunity allowed
him to reunite with his family in Maryland.
“I was working in Philadelphia, but my Wife and
children were in Maryland. The commute was
getting tiresome and I needed to be with my
family. I reached out to AMVETS looking for Career
Assistance and received so much more. My Career
Coach Karla Lathroum evaluated and provided
excellent feedback on my resume, she also provided
a suit (shoes, tie and shirt) for my interviews. I am
lucky to have had the support from AMVETS, they
helped me land a job with the National Archives
and Records Administration - Washington National
Record Center.”

VETERAN-FRIENDLY EMPLOYER OF
THE YEAR AWARD
There are employers who have gone beyond The Call of
Duty to hire our nation’s heroes. The AMVETS Veteran-
Friendly Employer of the Year Award is our way of
honoring those employers; which includes 7 total awards,
with 2 major categories (non-government and
government), all to target a wide range of employers. By
allowing anyone (including employers by nominating
themselves) to participate, we ensure that the
nomination process is as far-reaching as possible. The
deadline for the nomination is 30 June 2016.
(Nominations after this date won’t be considered.)
Awards will be judged in July by a committee consisting
of: AMVETS National Second Vice Marion Polk, AMVETS
Career Center Team Leader from IA-2 Mary Van Horn
and the Civil Services and Veterans Employment
Committee Chairman John Cooper. The awards will be
presented to the winners during the Commanders
banquet at the AMVETS National Convent ion in Reno in
August of this year. Please forward all inquiries and
nominations to the Career Center Director, Gema
Moreno, at gmoreno@amvets.org.

FEATURED EMPLOYER
Metro One Loss Prevention Services Group (Metro One
LPSG) is a mid-level security company that has a
Veteran-First approach to their hiring process. This
quarter we’d like to highlight this employer, who has
personally hired 3 of our Veterans at their Staten Island,
New York office. Additionally, the Staten Island-based
office consistently reaches out to the AMVETS Career
Center Team Leader in Staten Island to hire more
Veterans. With a 2-3 day hiring process, we shall look to
maintain a strong working relationship with Metro One
Loss in the near and distant future as we both work to
end Veteran unemployment.
AMVETS CAREER CENTER:
NUMBERS SPEAK LOUDER
THAN WORDS
The AMVETS Career Center is funded by The Call of
Duty Endowment. The one stipulation for the 2016
grant is for all AMVETS Career Centers across the
country to place 450 Veterans into new jobs by the
end of the year. The Career Centers across the
country have placed 102 Veterans in employment
as of 31 March 2016. This quarter, we have
surpassed not only our quarter goal, but ANY
quarter before in terms of overall placements. We
shall look to continue the pursuit of our main goal
of placing 450 Veterans by years end.

AMVETS Career Center Program is a proud recipient of the Seal of
Distinction award.
1st ANNUAL WOMEN VETERANS TRANSITION SPACE (WVTS) CAPITOL
HILL SUMMIT BREAKFAST
The Military Community has been done a disservice as a whole, but Female Veterans are nearly ignored entirely.
On the frontline of this issue is the Women Veterans Interactive. The Women Veterans Interactive is an
organization that was established “to address the unique, and often unrecognized, challenges facing our
nation’s 1.8 million woman veterans as they return to civilian life.” AMVETS attended the Women Veterans
Transition Space as an official sponsor for the Summit at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. In addition to
the National Commander James D. Pidgeon speaking to officially mark the occasion, the AMVETS Headquarters
Career Center team was in attendance for this important event. Through the collaborative efforts of Women
Veterans Interactive and AMVETS, we look to serve more Female Veterans by way of the Career Center as well as
to involve our Membership and National Service Officers so they may take full advantage of this endeavor.
