SALT
Fall Semester 2013 Application
Application Summary:
Read & understand this app.
Fill it out.
Have parent/guardian read application, confirm all mandatory dates, & sign.
Parent/guardian schedule coffee or dinner with Jared, Charlie, or Youth Staff.
Turn in completed application & do interview.
Q: What does it mean to be salty?
A: Well, if you are described as a “salty old lady” it means that you are weathered by
time and experience. You have a good wit or humor about you. You probably say
things out loud that shouldn’t be said out loud, but everyone appreciates it. You are
down to earth in a coarse or almost brackish* sort of way. [*if there are any words
that you don’t understand in this application, you should be looking them up,
understanding them, and rereading the sentence they were in.]
If you get out of the ocean then salty describes the feeling of having the salt water
dry on your body. When you move the thin layer of crystalized salt makes your skin
crusty and joints squeak.
Salty as in tasting like salt, the white substance that we eat and use on food.
In the bible, well, look up this website, then read the first 11 passages of scripture:
http://www.openbible.info/topics/salt (it is attached on the back page of this app)
Just as we have a couple of uses for the word now, so are there a couple of different
uses of the word in scripture.
We call ourselves the Student Action Leadership Team because that is what we want to
be. We are a group of students from the PL/OB/greater San Diego area. We want to
take action. Being a leader requires it. Leaders don’t sit still, they pray, plan, and move.
We are a team, in the most cliché and wonderful sense of the word, like how the
gang of toys in Toy Story were strangers, then become a group of friends and
overcome the adversity they face in each film. So shall we move from a group of
individuals into a group with a unique and interesting purpose…haha. Well, sort of.
Our goal is to be filled with and follow Jesus Christ. We want to perpetuate the
growth of the Kingdom here on earth. We want to be filled with the Holy Spirit,
which produces the good fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness,
goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.
This is what it means to be the Church.
If we are truly living that way, then a small group could make a large difference;
hence the salt metaphor. Salt preserves, it enhances, it brings out the flavors that
were already there and makes them better. God is already at work, we are the salt.
Our call is to be salt to the earth, to be a city on a hill welcoming people in. It’s to be
a light that is not hid under a basket, but put high for everyone to see.
Our goal for this Fall semester is to love our neighbors radically. Let me explain…
Our scripture of the year is Matthew 22:37-40:
“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul,
and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally
important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of
the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
This means we are called to radically love 1) God 2) Ourselves 3) Others 4) Creation.
God: of course. But, we need to be careful of putting God in a box. We use a little
three-letter word to try and describe the all-powerful, all-loving, beginning and the
end, indescribable, just, I AM G_d. This is a big God who has commanded us not to
place anything before God in our lives (Exodus 20:3). We need to take that
command seriously.
The next focus area might surprise you. The scripture says to love our neighbors,
but to do that as we love ourselves. What does that mean?
It doesn’t mean we should pamper ourselves as an excuse to be extravagant to our
neighbors. It means that if we are going to reach out and actually offer anyone
anything, it has to come from a place of wholeness. We aim to “be holy as your
Father in heaven is holy” (Matt 5:48), but if you wait to activate your faith until you
have all your questions answered or all your faults erased then you will never act.
That is why God’s grace exists. We get to continually offer up our shortcomings with
joy, because we offer them to one who forgives completely (Ephesians 4:32).
We need to recognize that we walk redeemed, forgiven, and cherished (Romans
8:14-16). We are called God’s family. Understanding this new identity and claiming
it in every moment is definitely radically loving ourselves.
Then, we move forward to share that love. We want to radically love our neighbors.
This will be a focus of the retreat. Who is our neighbor? How can we love them?
How can we love the creation God has entrusted us with?
I want these questions and their answers to shape the next year of our youth group.
Why do we need a team? You cannot follow Jesus by yourself. “Faith without deeds
is worthless” (James 2:14-26). Great, but how do we handle the Church being so
messy and broken?
Saint Augustine said, “The Church is a whore, but she is still my mother.” That
beautifully states the tension we have with loving something that is broken, but
worth loving. We love the Church because God has chosen the Church to fill up and
pour out for the world. What’s your role?
Know people who are different than you.
Engage.
Forgive.
Confess & Repent.
Love & Encourage.
ACTIONS::
Be involved in Church. We are having a SALT dinner with the church board at San
Diego First Church of the Nazarene on Thursday night Sept 19th. We want to sit with
the voted leaders of our church and eat together, ask them questions, and share the
stories from our youth group.
We want to know your family! This semester your parent, parents, or guardian get
to have a coffee or meal with Jared, Charlie, or your youth staff. We will pay for the
coffee or meal. Even better yet, we would love to bring an item to a family dinner at
your house! By being on SALT you are allowing us to support both you in your
journey and your family, in any way that means and no matter what they believe.

PARENTS:
Thanks for getting this far in this application. We are excited your child takes his or
her faith seriously. We exist to be a resource for you. We would love to meet with you in this
upcoming semester. The goal of that time is just to know each other better. You can honestly
set the agenda for that meet-up if you have things you’d like to discuss or ask.
At all times, everything we do is open to you. We have a weekly e-blast that sends
out up-to-date information. Also, our office, personnel, and resources are all yours. Jared’s
Masters Degree is in Spiritual Formation, and he has 13 years of youth ministry experience,
use that! We also have parents groups that meet up to discuss the current issues facing teens.
This is great to realize you are not alone on a lot of these issues. We have run technology
training for parents to help keep you up to speed on the current ways teenagers are using tech.
We also have three parent meetings a year. The Fall Parent’s Meeting is September 16th at
7:00pm. You are invited and please invite your peers.
By signing this you are saying “I have read this entire application, including my child’s
essays. I understand the commitment my child is making by joining the SALT. I support
his/her complete participation in the team and its objectives for the Fall semester. I will make
sure that I help them learn responsibility through communicating when family events pull
them away from youth group/church/SALT. I know Jared’s (619-228-3485) and Charlie’s
(209-304-8303) cell phone numbers and will call them when I have questions, comments,
concerns, or for any other reason I see fit. I do not have any unasked questions about this team

Salt fall 2013 application

  • 1. San Diego First Church of the Nazarene & The Naz Youth Group Student Action Leadership Team SALT Fall Semester 2013 Application Application Summary: Read & understand this app. Fill it out. Have parent/guardian read application, confirm all mandatory dates, & sign. Parent/guardian schedule coffee or dinner with Jared, Charlie, or Youth Staff. Turn in completed application & do interview. Q: What does it mean to be salty?
  • 2. A: Well, if you are described as a “salty old lady” it means that you are weathered by time and experience. You have a good wit or humor about you. You probably say things out loud that shouldn’t be said out loud, but everyone appreciates it. You are down to earth in a coarse or almost brackish* sort of way. [*if there are any words that you don’t understand in this application, you should be looking them up, understanding them, and rereading the sentence they were in.] If you get out of the ocean then salty describes the feeling of having the salt water dry on your body. When you move the thin layer of crystalized salt makes your skin crusty and joints squeak. Salty as in tasting like salt, the white substance that we eat and use on food. In the bible, well, look up this website, then read the first 11 passages of scripture: http://www.openbible.info/topics/salt (it is attached on the back page of this app) Just as we have a couple of uses for the word now, so are there a couple of different uses of the word in scripture. We call ourselves the Student Action Leadership Team because that is what we want to be. We are a group of students from the PL/OB/greater San Diego area. We want to take action. Being a leader requires it. Leaders don’t sit still, they pray, plan, and move. We are a team, in the most cliché and wonderful sense of the word, like how the gang of toys in Toy Story were strangers, then become a group of friends and overcome the adversity they face in each film. So shall we move from a group of individuals into a group with a unique and interesting purpose…haha. Well, sort of. Our goal is to be filled with and follow Jesus Christ. We want to perpetuate the growth of the Kingdom here on earth. We want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, which produces the good fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. This is what it means to be the Church. If we are truly living that way, then a small group could make a large difference; hence the salt metaphor. Salt preserves, it enhances, it brings out the flavors that were already there and makes them better. God is already at work, we are the salt. Our call is to be salt to the earth, to be a city on a hill welcoming people in. It’s to be a light that is not hid under a basket, but put high for everyone to see. Our goal for this Fall semester is to love our neighbors radically. Let me explain… Our scripture of the year is Matthew 22:37-40: “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally
  • 3. important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” This means we are called to radically love 1) God 2) Ourselves 3) Others 4) Creation. God: of course. But, we need to be careful of putting God in a box. We use a little three-letter word to try and describe the all-powerful, all-loving, beginning and the end, indescribable, just, I AM G_d. This is a big God who has commanded us not to place anything before God in our lives (Exodus 20:3). We need to take that command seriously. The next focus area might surprise you. The scripture says to love our neighbors, but to do that as we love ourselves. What does that mean? It doesn’t mean we should pamper ourselves as an excuse to be extravagant to our neighbors. It means that if we are going to reach out and actually offer anyone anything, it has to come from a place of wholeness. We aim to “be holy as your Father in heaven is holy” (Matt 5:48), but if you wait to activate your faith until you have all your questions answered or all your faults erased then you will never act. That is why God’s grace exists. We get to continually offer up our shortcomings with joy, because we offer them to one who forgives completely (Ephesians 4:32). We need to recognize that we walk redeemed, forgiven, and cherished (Romans 8:14-16). We are called God’s family. Understanding this new identity and claiming it in every moment is definitely radically loving ourselves. “Faith without deeds is worthless” (James 2:14-26). Great, but how do we handle the Church being so messy and broken? Saint Augustine said, “The Church is a whore, but she is still my mother.” That beautifully states the tension we have with loving something that is broken, but worth loving. We love the Church because God has chosen the Church to fill up and pour out for the world. What’s your role? Know people who are different than you. Engage. Forgive. Confess & Repent. Love & Encourage.

Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.” Luke 14:34-35 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?
