The Challenged America program introduces sailing as a therapeutic and rehabilitative enhancing activity to individuals with disabilities, their loved ones, and professionals in healthcare and rehabilitation.

Free Adaptive Sailing For People With Disabilities Challenged America has a fleet of eight Martin 16 sailboats adaptable to many disabilities. ‘Joystick’ steering requires minimum strength and mobility. Controls are brought to the skipper. For the sailor with extremely low mobility, a power assisted helm is available, operated similarly to power chair controls. Our facilities are 100% accessible and are equipped with lifts for sailors transferring from wheelchairs.

5. Participant Spotlight Judy sailed for the first time in early 2010 with Challenged America, and Sue in 2009. Since then, both have been sailing with C.A. every week. They enjoy sailing so much that they took it to the next level and went to Canada to compete in the 2010 Mobility Cup. Judy and Sue finished mid-fleet and had “one of the best times of their lives” and they are planning to enter the next

7. National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic On September 28, 2008 the Veteran’s Administration launched the first National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic here in San Diego. Recently disabled veterans come from all over the country to participate in five separate events during one week. Every September Challenged America has the honor of providing the sailing venue throughout the week at the Marriott Hotel and Marina.
8. Be A Companion Sailor Challenged America is a volunteer-based program. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or have no experience at all, C.A. can teach you how to sail the Martin 16. Join our team of dedicated volunteers and support Challenged America! Our volunteers are the support system of the program from companion sailing to fundraising.
