3. What are energy management standards?
• Energy Management Standards constitute a
demonstrated effective policy tool and market-
based mechanism to bring about sustainable
energy efficiency in industry (UNIDO)
• Energy management standards are being
developed to provide organizations with a roadmap
for ensuring that their energy use is as efficient as
possible (BSI)
4. Who creates these standards?
• ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
is the world's largest developer and publisher of
International Standards.
• ISO is a network of the national standards institutes
of 163 countries, one member per country, with a
Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that
coordinates the system.
• ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a
bridge between the public and private sectors. ISO
enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that
meet both the requirements of business and the
broader needs of society.
5. Who creates these standards?
• CEN (European Committee for Standardization)
is based in Brussels .
• It is the only recognized European organization for
the planning, drafting and adoption of European
Standards in all areas of economic activity with the
exemption of electrotechnology (CENELEC) and
telecommunication (ETSI).
• 32 National Members work together to develop
voluntary European Standards (ENs).
• Collaborates with ISO to ensure common text in EN
and ISO standards.

exercise for any site. The Energy Management System
has facilitated in the development of a clear concise
Energy management program”.
Michael Madigan (Utilities Engineer) – Pfizer
• “Energy management system certification has helped
DePuy Ireland proactively focus on reducing its energy
consumption and driving energy efficiency. The EnMS
system has enabled the organisation to expand its
operations in a more sustainable manner”
Dónal Og Cusak (Energy Manager) – DePuy Ireland

• Energy management system certification has helped
Diageo Baileys operations address its energy use in an
extremely positive manner. Since engaging in the energy
management certification process we have saved 25%
on weekend energy costs alone.
Evelyn Conlon (Risk Manager) - Diageo Bailey's Global
16. Deploying ISO 50001
• The organisations using ISO 50001 now have
control over their energy performance
• They understand the business variables affecting it
and can plan operations with this knowledge
• They are improving their energy management
performance in line with their capabilities
• This is ensuring their success
17. Where’s next
• More countries will “mandate” the use of ISO
50001 to achieve international commitments as
regards energy
• This approach is also ready used in EU and a
number of pilot schemes in USA/CAN
• Countries who were energy “rich/secure” are
seeing the fallacy of ignoring energy management
• We cannot continue to expect to have energy
wastage
• Its time to change our ways or change our world
