According to Gartner analyst Rakesh Kumar, “Current data centers will be unable to host the next
generation of high-density equipment, so CIOs will have to refurbish established sites, build new
ones or look for alternatives, such as using a hosting provider.”
What to do when you’re running
out of data center space.
As the battle for data center space intensifies,
resources shrink and competition becomes fiercer.
How to resolve the dilemma? Focus on increasing
capacity within existing parameters. Find innovative
ways to leverage technology and maximize
availability through infrastructure planning,
including virtualization and cloud/on demand
service delivery.
Approaches to Consider
Stay where you are. Put infrastructure projects on
hold and work with what you have. Upgrade your
physical space or technology. This is a short term
solution to a long term problem, but could allow IT
managers to buy some time.
Go somewhere else: Move selected storage needs
and/or applications to a cloud or SaaS model. For
example, a large in-house sales force automation
system can be outsourced to make room for other
mission critical applications, such as larger
accounting systems. Some companies are willing to
share extra data center space with others.
However, ‘renting’ space from a company data
center that has room to spare carries the risk that
the facility is not up to the highest standards.
Do something different: The most effective way to
meet the data center crunch is strategic
virtualization. Server requirements can be shrunk

to one-tenth of their size, and capacity maximized
by 60% or more (traditional servers often run at a
mere 20% capacity). But keep in mind the specific
power and network management functions
required to maintain maximum performance and
functionality.
Benefits of Outsourced
Data Center and Hosting
Solutions
According to Gartner analyst Rakesh Kumar, “The
perceived issues of lack of control and weaker
security with hosting players generally haven’t
manifested themselves. The net result is that
leasing space from a well-designed, modern data
center hosting provider can yield financial and
operational benefits.
“Currently, the market is supply constrained,
resulting in a rapid increase in costs. We expect this
hosting market to become very attractive during
the next few years, so users should move quickly to
secure good prices.”
