1. AN INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN LEGAL ENGLISH
Tuesdays 6.30 to 8.30 pm. March 6th
– 27th
This is a brief course for legal professionals and translators who want to gain further insights
into the language of lawyers prevailing in the US. They will then be introduced to the
functioning of the American legal system, they will analyze actual cases and go through the
vocabulary of three important areas of American Law. It may also serve as preparatory course
for those professionals who wish to continue their studies in an American University

2. AN INTRODUCTION TO LEGAL DRAFTING
Tuesdays 7.30 pm to 9 pm. Starting date: Tuesday 13th
February up to March 6th
This is a course for students who face the challenge of writing in a legal context quite frequently. A high
intermediate/upper intermediate command of English is required.
Course Content
- Writing e-mails in different contexts. Differences between formal an informal register.
Standardised expressions and stylistic conventions. Writing formal and semi-formal letters.
- Writing reports: developing reports in a legal context. Examples: a report about a case for
delegation to a colleague.
- Writing case briefs
- Common mistakes.
- Re-drafting some contract clauses.
- An introduction to the Plain Language Movement
- Integrated practices: written assignments derive from reading and listening exercises

- Elements of Contract Formation
- The structure of a typical commercial contract
- Leading cases
- Understanding complex contract clauses
- The usual language structures of contract clauses: conditional clauses, legalese, complex
connectors (provided that).

LEGAL ENGLISH THROUGH FILMS
Fridays from 6.30 to 7.30 pm. Starting date: February 9th
up to ebruary 23rd
Films are not only a source of entertainment but also a great opportunity to learn and reinforce legal
vocabulary, especially in the area of Criminal Law, Tort Law, and Civil Procedure. They are also a good
chance to learn professional skills in typical communicative situations (lawyer - client, lawyer - lawyer,
etc.). Course Content & Development:
- Vocabulary from films in the area of criminal law and procedure: Chicago, In the Name of the
Father
- Vocabulary from films in the area of civil procedure and torts. Example: Runnaway Jury
- Listening comprehension activities and debates on the film content
- Extracts from films will be watched through a projector and good audio quality.
