The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report
July 2012
Executive Summary
At the end of each academic year, Information Technology Services surveys the faculty and the student body
to assess both the level of service of technology at Saint Rose as well as the impact of technology on teaching
and learning. This year’s survey had 119 faculty members and instructors completing the survey. The student
survey yielded 590 respondents. While the statistical data is helpful and the increased response rate adds to
the validity of the data, the individual comments provide a wealth of insight into how our constituents feel
about technology at Saint Rose.
Key Faculty Findings
 69% (57% last year) of faculty members feel that technology is essential to success in their classes.
 96% (87% last year) of the faculty members are satisfied with the technology support they have received.
 78% (72% last year) of faculty members use Blackboard frequently or always.
 76% (61% last year) of faculty members feel that Blackboard is easy to use.
 19% (17% last year) of faculty members would recommend that the College switch to a course
management system other than Blackboard with 36% (51% last year) being unsure. 45% (32% last year) do
not want to switch.
Key Student Findings
 80% of students say that they are satisfied with the general classroom technology on campus.
 65% (same as last year) percent of students say that they use technology as a learning tool in most or all of
their classes.
 81% (78% last year) of students use Blackboard frequently or always.
 74% (70% last year) agree that using Blackboard contributes to their success in class.
 37% of students feel that the biggest challenge to classroom technology is that their professors do not
know how to use it.
 61% of students own a smart phone and 21% own a tablet device.
 30% of students report that their instructors do not allow them to use smart phones/tablets for note
taking or other activities in class.

I use the DVD/CD players in Massry LO3. I would like to use my CD's stored on my IPod, but don't know
how to hook it up to the speakers, so I continue to carry the CD's/ DVD's to the classroom.
Many of these I do not know what they are?

Learning more about helpful Ipad apps would be great.
Networking between computers
smartboards - would like to see more in our classrooms.
3. What other technologies should the College consider using?
it could be helpful to install remote desktop or a similar software so that the instructor can follow student
participation/exercises on his/her screen e.g. when teaching software based courses.
(ITS Note: This capability is already installed in computer classrooms.)
Bluetooth hookup from personal laptop to Smartbboard.
iPads (maybe similar to a laptop cart?) that professors can sign out and use with students
None. Unnecessary technology is driving up the price of college education until it's unaffordable, while
students are not learning any more or better; in fact, they are learning less, and worse.
Something other than Blackboard for a course management system
I'm taking CS101 with Stanford's Nick Parlente through Coursera and the software system he uses is
very interactive and engaging.
I need help with video taping a session for my classes. It needs to be done professionally in the studio.
Creating faculty webpages?
Moving out of Blackboard to better online quiz and test taking system
can't think of others beyond those listed above
We could use a networking system that allows computers to connect to each other.
We have a LOT of technology. Rather than investing in more and more just for the sake of investing, I'd
like to see us be very careful with our limited resources. For example, I'm not convinced we need to
update BB every time it's offered. (ITS Note: BB upgrades are included in the license costs.) I don't see
how clickers are useful when we don't have large lecture courses (I can see them working in a large
institution with hundreds of students in one class, but we don't do that here). We keep hearing how tight
our budget is--I hope that we consider that when making tech decisions.

Support for the technology we have would be very helpful. We need to attract a Mac Technician who is
qualified and wants to stay.
(ITS Note: ITS hired a new Macintosh Technician.)
a much more user friendly version of Blackboard, especially in terms of entering grades / organizing the
gradebook - very time consuming!
Still trying to catch up with the stuff we have!
I am not that savvy to suggest anything new!
Scrapblogs, prezi (sp?)
I think we should consider becoming a laptop campus so students have equal access to technology and
programs.
Turnitin
Continue using SPSS for students to analyse data
Digital recording devices in the Lally Clinic - there are still VCR's in there!! No student has a VCR
anymore, it's completely outdated and an ineffective teaching tool
(ITS Note: ITS is working with faculty members to test digital recording devices.)
Replace bulky laptops with high-end tablets.
Switch faculty to laptops rather than the office desktops
(ITS Note: Faculty have this option when they are scheduled to get a new computer.)
I would like to be able to post class lectures from our regular classrooms on blackboard.

Viewing clinical session via streaming video, with the option to save, store, edit, and burn videos
through a web portal or related system would be incredibly helpful.
Safe Assignment needs to be configured on the Home page of each course where students can run
their papers through themselves before submitting their work to check their own paper against the
plagiarism tool. This is a pro-active approach, rather than the police approach we currently take.
I would love to see improvement in the media library player in Lally 304 - I had many challenges with the
media player and I do show many DVD's during my classes. Next semester I hope to have two classes
in Lally 304 so that would be very helpful . Thank you for your help!
There needs to be a MAC person on the Help Desk that is available for main campus classrooms
throughout every class day. When a MAC computer is inoperable during class time, it's both frustrating
and inconvenient to hear we must wait "until the MAC person gets back from Picotte." When there are
24 MACs in a room and 24 students ready to do an in-class assignment, there isn't any leeway for
'waiting'.
The contact desk is great!
Ed Media is very pro-active.
test taking on Blackboard may have some issues.
I teach only in Brubacher and many times we do not know of new technology available to classrooms
unless I happen upon it while at a meeting in some classroom on campus.
As a Mac user, it is sometimes difficult to get help/support from someone who really knows Macs and
their software thoroughly. In addition, there are many updates always needed on my office computer
and getting those updates always feels like a slow (and/or nonexistent) process.
I've emailed questions, and they're always answered quickly and very helpfully.
The folks in ITS are helpful, pleasant and patient. We are more than lucky to have these folks. Raises
for all.
Lots of answers are "the system just works that way." this is the correct answer if true, but unhelpful.
They do a great job!
They are great! I've had my questions answered promptly & professionally (I know the question asked
about not being satisfied but I think they need compliments too!)
Much more responsive over the last couple of years.

Comments
When other faculty members re-set for their use, it is time consuming to figure out what needs to be
adjusted to make it work as it did the previous time it was used.
sometimes I forget how to make sound work
Sound in Lally is sometime not on.
not all teacher stations have QuickTime installed which makes showing certain videos difficult
I have trouble using smartboards.
Teacher station DVD/VHS controls almost never work properly- have called and reported three times--
different rooms, same problem. the navigation buttons don't move the dvd menu items in the direction
indicated.
volume problems with equipment
Sometimes 'guests' use the computer lab/classrooms in off-hours or evenings and disconnect certain
things or 'fiddle' with sound so they are inoperable for the next day's classes. It would be helpful if there
was a diagram on the teacher station that shows how all the "plugs"/connections should look when
operable so we can easily "see" what & why something isn't working & quickly fix it without having to
call ITS for a simple connection.
Had a slight hiccup with Smartboard in Albertus.
It is sometimes hard to get the machine to start.
videos don't have sufficient volume
The smart carts wiring system often comes undone when carts are wheeled over bumpy thresholds into
classroom in Brubacher. We have to call Media services to unlock and reattach.
The checkup on teacher stations need to take on a routine basis
On average, teacher station fails to operate properly once a week. It is usually because someone has
tampered with the components, disconnecting things they should not.
Audio has been an occasional problem
In your classes, is the classroom technology (projector, teacher station, sound)
functioning properly?

I've had difficulties with projection both function and brightness
Lally 359 projector shakes (HVAC?) way too much. Teacher station has had problems on and off this
past year.
phone may be out; computer programs may not be functioning
I need more help and more frequent help with glyph: the pictures insertion part is especially cranky.
Sometimes the sound cuts out on me. Has happened a few times this semester in Lally 147.
This has been a very stable year for technology in the classroom (in my opinion).
Problems in Alb 304 with connections to screens
Except sometimes the projector in A111 gets overheated and switches Off
some issues with sound in Albertus 110
Audio problems
Room 208 -- Printmaking studio does not have a dedicated computer ( we use a smart cart). It is not
guaranteed that one of the two machines in Picotte will be available. It's first come, first served. The
satellite computer lab in the Printmaking studio that houses four computers is sub par. There are four
macs in their that are sub-par, operating very slowly and are not synced with the other computers in
Picotte Hall. This past year, a request was put into IT to move one of the computers from the lab to the
studio. The work order was supposedly approved, and the work started. However, the job was never
completely finished. Will it be?
Volume controls in Albertus 103, 106, 108 are tricky.
I have had difficulties with DVDs. The Doc cameras are not always functioning easily
Ccim 119
Last semester I had a problem almost every class. It had a negative impact on my course evaluations.
This semester I have not had any problems.
Sometimes the sound does not work. Sometimes the projector is not working
Frequent problems with playing audio
science center 251 has no smartboard, the sound for the DVD doesn't always work (called media
services several times over the semester & they had to adjust some setting I couldn't fix myself), the
screen on the monitor would get large & cut off the symbols for the internet, etc.
Once in a while something (sound board, for example) doesn't work, but ITS showed up right away.
sometimes pc or projector is glitchy; think they are getting worn out.

I don't know what else, but something more visual with icons would be more user-friendly.
I also find it's easy for documents to become hidden or buried in Blackboard.
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 11
13. What features or capabilities do you want in a learning management system that Blackboard does not
provide or provide well?
dropbox feature that integrates with grade center
doc sharing feature that allows students to upload docs
(not sure how to explain this, but...) when you create a tab on the side, I would like to able to put in subheadings
that students can go to directly instead of having to open the tab and scroll through everything in it (i.e. I create a
tab for unit 1 that includes a content area for an overview, a a folder containing powerpoints, and an assignment
link - I would like them to be able to click on the unit 1 tab and then be able to scroll to click on the area they
want to go to instead of opening unit 1 and having to scroll through all of the content)
Don't want one. Want students who can read, write and speak.
More intuitive, fewer steps to do simple tasks
stored video importing. that is, having videos stored on a secure server that can be accessed through
Blackboard.
A more user friendly discussion board. And the recent changes to grade book (past three or four years) have
rendered it unusable to me.
The blog feature isn't really a blog--hard to follow thread and have conversations in writing. Would love to hold
Skype-like office hours for on-line courses.
Strong online test taking
You have to know what is there and exactly where it is located or you'll never find it.
Something with a site map might be better.
An integrated wordpress platform like the one used at University of Mary Washington through
Word Press Multi-User
God, yes. I've heard good things about Moodle, but I've never used it.
Blackboard seems fine, open to what might be better
any open source system
I HATE MOODLE! please stick with Blackboard
Please DONT change it again.
Every year we have to learn some new program, which is a complete waste of time and money.
Not sure of the options, but am eager to learn more.
iTunesU
I strongly oppose purchasing ANY open source software for a mission critical education platform

See answer to no. 12 above. I currently use Bb as a way for students to post their PowerPoint or Luna
presentations to be viewed in class and individually by other students after class. I'd like a way this can be linked
with discussion about the presentations. Right now the blog feature allows comments, but not the kinds of
discussion threads with questions and answers that I'm trying to create.
More "realistic"--that is not as closed, more highly interactive and social with audiences outside the classroom--
blogging and wiki features.
Easy and logical interface. User friendly.
no comment
Really can't say since I don't use BB to its full capacity now.
Discussion board threads are very cumbersome. Blog works better for interaction but still somewhat awkward.
simpler platform. up-to-date architecture that is more aligned with current social networking applications
BB is just clunky. Things can be hard to find. It's slow. And it would be nice to have a feature that allowed
students to know how possible grades would affect their overall grade. So once I input how much everything is
worth and I keep a total percentage column, it would be nice if they could figure out for themselves "What do I
need to get on the paper to pass the class?"
Sharing content, uploading videos, movement of content, text, audio, etc. with ease.
be able to grade in the Blog feature, and have those grades recorded in the gradebook
- also, need a better blog system - often this one won't set up - I end up having Christine Page as a second
instructor on my course, to even get the blog feature to work on week 5, after it did work previously; later, it
worked again but in a different format. confusing for the students and for me.
Open source.
Blackboard does not allow for group edits anywhere in the system. It is tedious to go through and perform the
same manipulation to multiple objects. The gradebook is also very difficult to use and is buggy. Drag and drop
column sorting would be nice (with the option to KEEP it that way)
integration with WebAssign that I use through Cengage. I believe it can be done, but needs to be set up by ITS
I wish the grading rubric feature could be integrated with safe assignments. Right now, students have to drop
assignments in two places - safe assign for plagiarism checks and writing assignment so I can use a rubric.
1. that group grades be automatically posted to individual members after groups have been created
2 A standardized system classifying student performance in number grades into letter grades
3 A view on one screen for individual student performance over the semester
4. A view of attendance on one screen for all 30 lectures
5. a vertical arrangement of photo roster to permit print out
Too many keystrokes in Bbd for simple operations. Grade center must be conceptualized as a whole in advance
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 13
of using it - should be more flexible for changes on the fly.
EASE.
Better use with an I-pad for moi,e usage.
Some of the testing features and assignment management features that come with the textbooks are more user
friendly. Blackboard can be a little "clunky" at times.
Appropriately functioning Elluminate
Really hate the tracking student usage - very difficulty to use effectively
Sharing applications
Test Construction re: Efforts to reduce online cheating
For some reason, I've had more problems with Bb this year - in the past it seemed easier to use, and I've been
using it for over 10 years
The test design feature is not very good. I use Respondus to create my tests because I can incorporate
multimedia content more easily.
Collaborate: Tracking capability of students who watch recorded classes, and the ability to stop and start
recordings between students in one room with recordings distributed accordingly.
Greater ease of use (grade entry, for example) - something more like a spreadsheet for grades.
The biggest problem I have with Bb is that students are often kicked out of tests and I have to reset them. Is
there some way to make this feature more reliable?

In the 20-plus years I have been teaching college, student abilities to read, write, speak, study and learn have
been on a steady downward slant, while technology use has been increasing in inverse proportion; obviously,
this is anecdotal, but in my experience, technology does nothing to aid, and much to harm, learning. It has also
made our jobs harder, as we are now expected constantly to keep up with new technology, a drain on our time
that could be spent with students or doing research and writing.

secure manner? With access provided to outside professionals who are given permission to access materials?
Sherry, Christine & Tom are invaluable!! They are not only so willing to help clarify things, they never make me
like a basic-level question is 'stupid'!
I would like to do more, but I don't have time for lunch much less anything else. Attending the great opportunities
offered by IT is something I can rarely do. Unfortunately, most teaching will need to be 1:1 and I feel bad about
that.
I'm looking for a way to make my art history classes more interactive, where students can somehow project
images or video clips of their choice (from Luna?) to make points during discussion vs. my having to guess
ahead of time what they might discuss and (hopefully) bring the right images. I want to encourage them to make
connections on their own vs. me making them for the students, which having a previously prepared image
presentation does. I'm thinking students with IPads here (that function like the clickers) with wireless connection
to classroom projector, but I don't want to monitor students surfing the web for material not related to class.
I haven't used it yet but I plan to integrate it in the fall. I talked with Media Services about different methods.
I love Christine and Tom! They are both so helpful!
I really hope somebody plans on actually teaching and not just using technology. The ITS folks do a great job--
but my faculty colleagues too often care only to have the latest neat techie toy. That's not teaching.
I would like to learn more about the software that allows me to "turn off" the students computers in the
classroom. I know how to do the basics, but think I could do more...
I appreciate upgrades, but it takes me time to adjust and relearn.
WE NEED MORE MAC SUPPORT! IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE MAC TECH
SUPPORT STAFF.
Collaborate synchronous virtual environment - this is a feature I would like to learn more about.
More SmartBoard access. Actual access for students to use. When they are doing practicum or student
teaching, they need access to the boards to prepare and practice
I wish there were microphones in class to project voice during lectures
I think we should be more critical of our dependence on technology. Simply because the technology exists, it
does not mean that we need to integrate it into the classroom across the board. I appreciate the technology
resources at the college and would use them occasionally; however, I think the college is overly invested in
technology in a way that is uncritical. New technology does not equate to better teaching; technology is a
supplement to good teaching.
I would like to see the Saint Rose website overhauled. I'd like each faculty member to have a default webpage
with a uniform format and photo.
I wish Mediasite could be more portable and used to record class lectures so I could post them on Bb.
Just want to give a shout out to Rachel and the rest of the Media Services staff. They always provide prompt
professional service and I appreciate their work very much.

Other schools require all professors to use Blackboard. At St. Rose it is hit or miss on who uses it.

Other schools supposedly have larger room on their servers for student storage. They also have larger
scanners, and better printers that can print larger. The printers at Picotte cannot print posters, or other
large format projects, and the EAC Print Shop refuses to print them for us anymore. If we are being

Printing/Printers
PLEASE MAKE COPYING FREE TO GRAD STUDENTS
Your printers are always broken and malfunctioning. It's extremely irritating when many students rely on the
campus printers for their work.
Printer availability and color printing. Also more places to add money to account.
Questions on the printing systems in the libarary and Lima lab regarding their reliability and usefulness.
Computers are usually fine, but printers are a hot commodity. Many times they're broken, missing toner, not
connected, erroring, or simply aren't enough available in different locations.
Update the printers in Picotte Hall and keep a tech person to maintain them close at hand.
Ask about the printers! Either broken, out of paper, or out of ink every time.
More printing money each semester
Did you have enough money, to print your assignments, on your ID Card?
Were you able to print all of your assignments on campus?
How often would you say the lab printer/s are unavailable, broken, out-of-ink, or in need of some form of
maintenance?
Provide more printers and fix them everyday. I'm tired of printers not having the right kind of paper, or any
ink/toner.
Printers are rarely functional and cause delays and added issues and stress to completing assignments and
Usherwood is not very helpful or timely in fixing recurrent issues.
The printer in Albertus hall never seems to be functioning properly. Most of my classes are in that building and I
was rarely able to print from it. Therefore I was unable to print many of my assignments.
Blackboard
Allow Blackboard access to the Blackboard mobile app for more convienence while away from the computer.
How many of your classes integrate Blackboard into their curriculum? (without this information you may be
mistaken to believe that my answers pertain to all professors/courses... which they very much do not! I have had
SEVERAL teachers who have never used it. After my first year here, I have had 6 professors, and only 2 have
used BB!!)
BB navigation needs to be clearer. When using blackboard for an online course you have to check all tabs to
ensure that you have completed all parts of the assignment for the week.
All teachers should use blackboard to post grades throughout the whole semester so students know how they
are doing.
blackboard is useful for grades, even if the professors only use it for that application it is nice to keep track.
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 33
In question 16~the only real reason I like blackboard and find it useful is because that is where my professors
post their lecture notes and my grades. this could be done through other means and therefore I don't think there
is a direct relationship between my success and blackboard. I also think that courses in an online environment
can only be a good thing if the subject matter is one which lends itself to being taught in such a fashion.
I would like it if all of the professors are required to put grades online. Not all of my professors do this. It makes
me very uncomfortable that I cannot check my progress when I need to.
get rid of blackboard
Network/Wireless
Faster more reliable internet
Satisfaction with wireless internet. At times my access point in my Dorming hall was not properly functioning
How was the wifi service. In Lima hall, sometimes the wifi network was not very strong or working correctly.
Smart Boards
with all the changing technology I would like to see more workshops on one technology or entry level tech
classess for grad students. I attended a SMARTboard workshop and would love to see more like that.
More Smartboard use by teachers, especially for education majors. Smartboards are an excellent way to teach
subjects in schools as well.
Add answer to above question "What is the biggest challenge to classroom technology?". Answer: Smartboards
not working properly.
Use smart boards in class.
More integration on uses of Blackboard and SmartBoards especially in my education classes, instead of just
theory of ideas for use in the classroom. This is especially important for my education classes.
Library
Do you cite using the library services? I do and I can't figure out why AP
A style doesn't format correctly.
Librarians are not proficient at word or ppt ...it would be helpful to have someone available who can answer
questions about these programs while im doing an assignment. perhaps offer a training on the newer versions
of word and ppt? for students and faculty
providing information for those to better learn how to use APA format, and revision on papers
Do you cite using the library services? I do and I can't figure out why APA style doesn't format correctly.
Faculty/Teaching
My teachers would use power point presentations which come straight from the book and they as teacher do not
add again to the slides.
How can be teach professors to better utilize the available technology?
I frequently ponder this question myself. Some of my professors do not use technology very often; mostly
because they do not really know how. I am usually the "go to" student when something is not working properly
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 34
and/or the professor does not know how to use it. I do not mind helping out, but it gets frustrating at times. I know
college students are viewed as the tech savvy ones these days, but professors should at least know the basics.
The worst thing that can happen is to have a missing grade on Blackboard and have the professor say "I do not
know how that got there." I personally only know how to use Blackboard from the student end and quite honestly
do not think I should have to know how to use it from the professor's end just to get the grade I earned in a class.
It should be a requirement for all teachers to use Blackboard. It helps students track their grades and progress
better, and it is easier for us to do better in classes knowing our status along the way. I have done better in the
classes where my teacher uses Blackboard than in those classes where the teachers did not. I think it could
also be a useful tool for teachers as well, if they use it correctly.
I also think that there should be a yearly or per semester seminar for professors to be taught about the new
technologies on campus. Only one of my teachers this semester (and I had 4 in class 1 online) knew how to
properly use all the technology she was faced with. It's very difficult for students to learn material if half the class
is taken up by the profressor trying to figure out how to get everything to work properly. I'm here to learn. I'd like
to be able to do so, and do to that we need teachers who are taught how to use all the necessary materials.
Most education professors are stupid and don't know how to teach.
I wish professors would use blackboard more i find i like the classes that do use it more than the classes that
dont use it.
My professors really only use any technology for PowerPoint and to occasionally show videos. If technology is
so important to the college they need to reach out to professors more to get them to integrate it into the
classroom learning environment more.
I appreciate technology in the learning environment. Those professors who do use it, really use it. Those who do
not, do not use it at all.
Technology can be helpful, but only if the quality of teachers is very high. Good teachers are far more important
then fancy technology. Therefore, I believe blackboard and wireless Internet and such is good to have, but the
focus of money spent should be teacher prep and good teaching salaries.
One thing I have found is that the adjunct instructors are not always aware/familiar of/with use of Blackboard. I
think it's important to point out that the full-time professors tend to have a better knowledge of the technology
available on-campus, and tend to use it more regularly.
Give some credit to teachers who don't like technology, don't really understand it, but try really hard to use it - in
your question 2.
are there teachers that use blackboard but not all of it? IE. Grades
More Smartboard use by teachers, especially for education majors. Smartboards are an excellent way to teach
subjects in schools as well.
Online/Hybrid Courses
more fully online classes
The effect of offering online courses, helps commuter students out and also makes it easier to take more credits
if the student is task oriented and motivated.
I am taking a graduate level hybrid course for the first time and it is one of the most organized and well-planned
course I have ever taken at the College. I have taken online courses in the past at other institutions and can
honestly say that I learned very little. One reason I liked the hybrid course more than a traditional fully online
course is because I feel that some human contact and interaction is necessary to fully process and absorb new
information. The hybrid course I taking is "College Admissions Counseling" with Gloria Jean and the materials,
Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 35
resources, and assignments are so rich and meaningful - the structure she created could serve as an example to
other faculty who are looking to develop hybrid courses.
More online courses please!
My classes in the fall and spring were online using Teacher Education Intstitute and they were fantastic!
Smart Phones/Tablets/Laptops
We should be able to use phones in class- I keep my calendar on my phone in lieu of a paper assignment book
and it's annoying to get yelled at for writing assignments down in my phone
if we would like to use ipads or tablets to take notes (i agree we should, but the problem would be paying
attention, but since we have small classes, im not sure it would be too difficult.) plus if the teacher was using
blackboard information it would be easier to access information via ipad. notes would be much simpler and
faster so i could pay attention more rather than having to attempt to listen and write
Some professors give us a hardtime about using laptops in class. I understand their concerns about students
browsing the internet. But this is 2012, I don't like to take notes by hand. On my computer my notes are
organized and saved. I am 26 years old, and don't appreciate some professors giving me a hard time for using a
laptop. There should be a policy that students are allowed to use laptops in class for note taking purposes.
I think that we should be able to use/ bring our laptops and handheld devices to take notes.
With regard to #6 - It's because I'm not allowed to. The use of smart phones is prohibited in classes. This is a
silly policy and should be discontinued.
Computer Labs
It would be beneficial to have computer labs where classes are not held during the afternoons and evenings,
strictly computer labs for student use.
How available are computer labs or how easy is it to find out if a computer lab is in use for a class.
More computers in the main lounge.
How long do you think every computer lab should be open?
Which computer lab do you rely on the most?
Do you often have problems with campus computers freezing or crashing?
Were you able to access all of the programs your classes require, in every computer lab on campus?
What limitations do you find, when you work in a campus computer lab?
Whether the student was able to fully utilize the computer lab without the help of a lab aid. Typically, computer
labs such as Lima Lab and Brubacher Lab are extremely noisy and unable to be tamed by Security. Perhaps
having lab aides stationed in these labs on a more frequent basis would alleviate this problem.
Do you want there to be more computer labs on the campus with music programs such as Sibelius, reason, pro
tools, and garage band? Cause I do!!!!!!
How long do you think every computer lab should be open?

General Comments
The science laboratory technology could use upgrading particularly with the increasing number of students that
use the equipment.
technology does more bad than good. make fat lazy kids carry and read real books, walk their ass to class, and
live in a world that isnt behind a screen.
more of a music tech budget would be appreciated. we need new mics and drum heads bad.
My classes in the fall and spring were online using Teacher Education Intstitute and they were fantastic!
I LOVE all the technology on campus, it makes my life a lot easier.
Thanks for all that you do to keep Saint Rose running. (I feel like people give you the short end of the stick since
they only talk to you when things aren't working and they take you for granted when things are working)
Do not use iwebfolio EVER. I know that you are switching the platform for SEED students anyway next year, but
I wanted one last chance to express my displeasure that 46 student teaching candidates had issues with this
website at one point or another and the best IT'S could tell us was "not our problem, contact the company." Very
frustrating experience.
This is my 5th year (now a grad student) at this school) and the only technology I ever use on campus is the
wireless and I strongly believe that it is wrong to charge me so much money on my tuition bill for technology fees
when I hardly use any of it.
Maybe you can ask about the students thoughts on wether they prefer macs over windows or visa versa
Refresher workshops on the updated software versions such as PowerPoint, Excel, Access, MS Word ect.
Have courses where we can use either Macintosh or Window or linux. Right now all my classes have been
geared towards Windows. While in the real world Linux and Mac's are starting to be more popular in
programming.
I would suggest that we stop buying flat screen monitors and instead use the money for more important things,
like stop the policy of having to swipe your ID card to print. We all know this is to save money on ink and paper,
which is ridiculous due to the amount of money we spend to attend Saint Rose. I don't care about the aesthetics
of my technology, as long as I can ACTUALLY use the resources available, rather than not be able to print out
my assignments.
(ITS Note: Flat screen monitors are now the industry standard. They use much less electricity and contain far
fewer heavy metals than the CRT monitors they replaced. The cost is also about the same.)
with all the changing technology I would like to see more workshops on one technology or entry level tech
classess for grad students. I attended a SMARTboard workshop and would love to see more like that.
I feel as though there should be an integration of technology, but there needs to be a balance.

Survey Suggestions
Ask for majors and year because new generations are going to change the face of technology in education.
Allow for more open-ended answers. Answers provided were very limiting! The technology workshop offered
during Graduate orientation was not helpful! Handouts and explanation of other technologies (moodle) that
some professors use would have been very helpful. In general I have found IT services at the college lacking
and very frustrating. Too many different log-in procedures. There always seems to be a wrinkle or complication;
very frustrating!! IT help services either unable to help or gives wrong information or are unsure of information.
Can't assume that grad students will know how to use college computer system!!
I think that a lot of these questions were important to ask however I also feel as if the questions could have been
worded better.
With #16, if you put "neutral" or added it to the current "unsure", it'd be beneficial; since unsure implies not
knowing, and the other means we're not leaning either way. I chose "unsure" because there was no "neutral"
option, not because I didn't know...
The questions on if we use different types of technology in our classroom either answer yes, or no but it would
be helpful was extremely bias and didn't allow for anyone to tell if they dont think it would be useful.
wording the questions so you could indicate some, perhaps not all professors do not use technology
When rating technology, add a "Do not currently use, and don't think it would be useful in your studies" option.
Just because we don't have something doesn't mean we need it or want it
I would suggest less questions. It becomes monotonous.
you should add not applicable as an option to question 3.
are you satisfied with the speed of technology?
Part 3 (Which of the following technologies/internet tools do you) requires a third response option to note that the
technology would NOT be useful in a classroom, which I believe to be the case with most options listed.
I believe that technology is crucial to learning, but most of the ideas and options listed in this survey are poor
choices in learning with technology.
I believe survey is well structured and all required questions are added.
Please consult with the college's dept. of computer science. They are real experts in integrating technology into
education, and I am told they never get consulted on these matters. What a wasted opportunity for the college!
(ITS Note: The Department Chairperson for CS is on the Academic Technology Committee which guides
technology decisions for the College.)
Make better options on the drop down menus. It seems that the survey assumes that everyone wants more
technology/more technology is better and therefore the survey is biased.
Audio editing software questions.
We should be able to use phones in class- I keep my calendar on my phone in lieu of a paper assignment book
and it's annoying to get yelled at for writing assignments down in my phone.
Have you ever had to call I.T.S? Please rate their usefulness.
Question #3 should have an option that you would not incorporate that technology in the classroom, as well as
an option that you use the technology, just not in the classroom.

I want to be clear I hate online textbooks and books you buy and can not return or sell. It is frustrating
considering how much students pay Tehran we can exchange a book (unless it's become outdated) or
have to purchase an e textbook that I can't return(has happened on other campus' to me)

Spring 2012 faculty & student technology surveys report

  • 1. Information Technology Services The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report July 2012
  • 2. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 1 Information Technology Services The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report July 2012 Executive Summary At the end of each academic year, Information Technology Services surveys the faculty and the student body to assess both the level of service of technology at Saint Rose as well as the impact of technology on teaching and learning. This year’s survey had 119 faculty members and instructors completing the survey. The student survey yielded 590 respondents. While the statistical data is helpful and the increased response rate adds to the validity of the data, the individual comments provide a wealth of insight into how our constituents feel about technology at Saint Rose. Key Faculty Findings  69% (57% last year) of faculty members feel that technology is essential to success in their classes.  96% (87% last year) of the faculty members are satisfied with the technology support they have received.  78% (72% last year) of faculty members use Blackboard frequently or always.  76% (61% last year) of faculty members feel that Blackboard is easy to use.  19% (17% last year) of faculty members would recommend that the College switch to a course management system other than Blackboard with 36% (51% last year) being unsure. 45% (32% last year) do not want to switch. Key Student Findings  80% of students say that they are satisfied with the general classroom technology on campus.  65% (same as last year) percent of students say that they use technology as a learning tool in most or all of their classes.  81% (78% last year) of students use Blackboard frequently or always.  74% (70% last year) agree that using Blackboard contributes to their success in class.  37% of students feel that the biggest challenge to classroom technology is that their professors do not know how to use it.  61% of students own a smart phone and 21% own a tablet device.  30% of students report that their instructors do not allow them to use smart phones/tablets for note taking or other activities in class.

  • 4. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 3 Video Cameras 26% 34% 40% Tablets (iPad) 12% 55% 34% Other I use the DVD/CD players in Massry LO3. I would like to use my CD's stored on my IPod, but don't know how to hook it up to the speakers, so I continue to carry the CD's/ DVD's to the classroom. Many of these I do not know what they are? your options don't allow seeing relevance but not wanting to learn more. Your data may be skewed in the middle column document cameras Luna Image Database Learning more about helpful Ipad apps would be great. Networking between computers smartboards - would like to see more in our classrooms. 3. What other technologies should the College consider using? it could be helpful to install remote desktop or a similar software so that the instructor can follow student participation/exercises on his/her screen e.g. when teaching software based courses. (ITS Note: This capability is already installed in computer classrooms.) Bluetooth hookup from personal laptop to Smartbboard. iPads (maybe similar to a laptop cart?) that professors can sign out and use with students None. Unnecessary technology is driving up the price of college education until it's unaffordable, while students are not learning any more or better; in fact, they are learning less, and worse. Something other than Blackboard for a course management system I'm taking CS101 with Stanford's Nick Parlente through Coursera and the software system he uses is very interactive and engaging. I need help with video taping a session for my classes. It needs to be done professionally in the studio. Creating faculty webpages? Moving out of Blackboard to better online quiz and test taking system can't think of others beyond those listed above We could use a networking system that allows computers to connect to each other. We have a LOT of technology. Rather than investing in more and more just for the sake of investing, I'd like to see us be very careful with our limited resources. For example, I'm not convinced we need to update BB every time it's offered. (ITS Note: BB upgrades are included in the license costs.) I don't see how clickers are useful when we don't have large lecture courses (I can see them working in a large institution with hundreds of students in one class, but we don't do that here). We keep hearing how tight our budget is--I hope that we consider that when making tech decisions.
  • 5. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 4 Support for the technology we have would be very helpful. We need to attract a Mac Technician who is qualified and wants to stay. (ITS Note: ITS hired a new Macintosh Technician.) a much more user friendly version of Blackboard, especially in terms of entering grades / organizing the gradebook - very time consuming! Still trying to catch up with the stuff we have! I am not that savvy to suggest anything new! Scrapblogs, prezi (sp?) I think we should consider becoming a laptop campus so students have equal access to technology and programs. Turnitin Continue using SPSS for students to analyse data Digital recording devices in the Lally Clinic - there are still VCR's in there!! No student has a VCR anymore, it's completely outdated and an ineffective teaching tool (ITS Note: ITS is working with faculty members to test digital recording devices.) Replace bulky laptops with high-end tablets. Switch faculty to laptops rather than the office desktops (ITS Note: Faculty have this option when they are scheduled to get a new computer.) I would like to be able to post class lectures from our regular classrooms on blackboard. 4. Which technology support mechanisms have you used this past semester? Check all that apply. Safe Assignment needs to be configured on the Home page of each course where students can run their papers through themselves before submitting their work to check their own paper against the plagiarism tool. This is a pro-active approach, rather than the police approach we currently take. I would love to see improvement in the media library player in Lally 304 - I had many challenges with the media player and I do show many DVD's during my classes. Next semester I hope to have two classes in Lally 304 so that would be very helpful . Thank you for your help! There needs to be a MAC person on the Help Desk that is available for main campus classrooms throughout every class day. When a MAC computer is inoperable during class time, it's both frustrating and inconvenient to hear we must wait "until the MAC person gets back from Picotte." When there are 24 MACs in a room and 24 students ready to do an in-class assignment, there isn't any leeway for 'waiting'. The contact desk is great! Ed Media is very pro-active. test taking on Blackboard may have some issues. I teach only in Brubacher and many times we do not know of new technology available to classrooms unless I happen upon it while at a meeting in some classroom on campus. As a Mac user, it is sometimes difficult to get help/support from someone who really knows Macs and their software thoroughly. In addition, there are many updates always needed on my office computer and getting those updates always feels like a slow (and/or nonexistent) process. I've emailed questions, and they're always answered quickly and very helpfully. The folks in ITS are helpful, pleasant and patient. We are more than lucky to have these folks. Raises for all. Lots of answers are "the system just works that way." this is the correct answer if true, but unhelpful. They do a great job! They are great! I've had my questions answered promptly & professionally (I know the question asked about not being satisfied but I think they need compliments too!) Much more responsive over the last couple of years. 7. In your classes, is the classroom technology (projector, teacher station, sound) functioning properly? Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 7 Comments When other faculty members re-set for their use, it is time consuming to figure out what needs to be adjusted to make it work as it did the previous time it was used. sometimes I forget how to make sound work Sound in Lally is sometime not on. not all teacher stations have QuickTime installed which makes showing certain videos difficult I have trouble using smartboards. Teacher station DVD/VHS controls almost never work properly- have called and reported three times-- different rooms, same problem. the navigation buttons don't move the dvd menu items in the direction indicated. volume problems with equipment Sometimes 'guests' use the computer lab/classrooms in off-hours or evenings and disconnect certain things or 'fiddle' with sound so they are inoperable for the next day's classes. It would be helpful if there was a diagram on the teacher station that shows how all the "plugs"/connections should look when operable so we can easily "see" what & why something isn't working & quickly fix it without having to call ITS for a simple connection. Had a slight hiccup with Smartboard in Albertus. It is sometimes hard to get the machine to start. videos don't have sufficient volume The smart carts wiring system often comes undone when carts are wheeled over bumpy thresholds into classroom in Brubacher. We have to call Media services to unlock and reattach. The checkup on teacher stations need to take on a routine basis On average, teacher station fails to operate properly once a week. It is usually because someone has tampered with the components, disconnecting things they should not. Sometimes the sound cuts out on me. Has happened a few times this semester in Lally 147. This has been a very stable year for technology in the classroom (in my opinion). Problems in Alb 304 with connections to screens Except sometimes the projector in A111 gets overheated and switches Off some issues with sound in Albertus 110 Audio problems Room 208 -- Printmaking studio does not have a dedicated computer ( we use a smart cart). It is not guaranteed that one of the two machines in Picotte will be available. It's first come, first served. The satellite computer lab in the Printmaking studio that houses four computers is sub par. There are four macs in their that are sub-par, operating very slowly and are not synced with the other computers in Picotte Hall. This past year, a request was put into IT to move one of the computers from the lab to the studio. The work order was supposedly approved, and the work started. However, the job was never completely finished. Will it be? Volume controls in Albertus 103, 106, 108 are tricky. I have had difficulties with DVDs. The Doc cameras are not always functioning easily Ccim 119 Last semester I had a problem almost every class. It had a negative impact on my course evaluations. This semester I have not had any problems. Sometimes the sound does not work. Sometimes the projector is not working Frequent problems with playing audio science center 251 has no smartboard, the sound for the DVD doesn't always work (called media services several times over the semester & they had to adjust some setting I couldn't fix myself), the screen on the monitor would get large & cut off the symbols for the internet, etc. Once in a while something (sound board, for example) doesn't work, but ITS showed up right away. sometimes pc or projector is glitchy; think they are getting worn out. 8. What features or capabilities do you want in a learning management system that Blackboard does not provide or provide well? dropbox feature that integrates with grade center doc sharing feature that allows students to upload docs (not sure how to explain this, but...) when you create a tab on the side, I would like to able to put in subheadings that students can go to directly instead of having to open the tab and scroll through everything in it (i.e. I create a tab for unit 1 that includes a content area for an overview, a a folder containing powerpoints, and an assignment link - I would like them to be able to click on the unit 1 tab and then be able to scroll to click on the area they want to go to instead of opening unit 1 and having to scroll through all of the content) Don't want one. Want students who can read, write and speak. More intuitive, fewer steps to do simple tasks stored video importing. that is, having videos stored on a secure server that can be accessed through Blackboard. A more user friendly discussion board. And the recent changes to grade book (past three or four years) have rendered it unusable to me. The blog feature isn't really a blog--hard to follow thread and have conversations in writing. Would love to hold Skype-like office hours for on-line courses. Strong online test taking You have to know what is there and exactly where it is located or you'll never find it. Something with a site map might be better. An integrated wordpress platform like the one used at University of Mary Washington through Word Press Multi-User God, yes. I've heard good things about Moodle, but I've never used it. Blackboard seems fine, open to what might be better any open source system I HATE MOODLE! please stick with Blackboard Please DONT change it again. Every year we have to learn some new program, which is a complete waste of time and money. Not sure of the options, but am eager to learn more. iTunesU I strongly oppose purchasing ANY open source software for a mission critical education platform
  • 13. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 12 See answer to no. 12 above. I currently use Bb as a way for students to post their PowerPoint or Luna presentations to be viewed in class and individually by other students after class. I'd like a way this can be linked with discussion about the presentations. Right now the blog feature allows comments, but not the kinds of discussion threads with questions and answers that I'm trying to create. More "realistic"--that is not as closed, more highly interactive and social with audiences outside the classroom-- blogging and wiki features. Easy and logical interface. User friendly. no comment Really can't say since I don't use BB to its full capacity now. Discussion board threads are very cumbersome. Blog works better for interaction but still somewhat awkward. simpler platform. up-to-date architecture that is more aligned with current social networking applications BB is just clunky. Things can be hard to find. It's slow. And it would be nice to have a feature that allowed students to know how possible grades would affect their overall grade. So once I input how much everything is worth and I keep a total percentage column, it would be nice if they could figure out for themselves "What do I need to get on the paper to pass the class?" Sharing content, uploading videos, movement of content, text, audio, etc. with ease. be able to grade in the Blog feature, and have those grades recorded in the gradebook - also, need a better blog system - often this one won't set up - I end up having Christine Page as a second instructor on my course, to even get the blog feature to work on week 5, after it did work previously; later, it worked again but in a different format. confusing for the students and for me. Open source. Blackboard does not allow for group edits anywhere in the system. It is tedious to go through and perform the same manipulation to multiple objects. The gradebook is also very difficult to use and is buggy. Drag and drop column sorting would be nice (with the option to KEEP it that way) integration with WebAssign that I use through Cengage. I believe it can be done, but needs to be set up by ITS I wish the grading rubric feature could be integrated with safe assignments. Right now, students have to drop assignments in two places - safe assign for plagiarism checks and writing assignment so I can use a rubric. 1. that group grades be automatically posted to individual members after groups have been created 2 A standardized system classifying student performance in number grades into letter grades 3 A view on one screen for individual student performance over the semester 4. A view of attendance on one screen for all 30 lectures 5. a vertical arrangement of photo roster to permit print out Too many keystrokes in Bbd for simple operations. Greater ease of use (grade entry, for example) - something more like a spreadsheet for grades. Sherry, Christine & Tom are invaluable!! They are not only so willing to help clarify things, they never make me like a basic-level question is 'stupid'! I would like to do more, but I don't have time for lunch much less anything else. Attending the great opportunities offered by IT is something I can rarely do. Unfortunately, most teaching will need to be 1:1 and I feel bad about that. I'm looking for a way to make my art history classes more interactive, where students can somehow project images or video clips of their choice (from Luna?) to make points during discussion vs. my having to guess ahead of time what they might discuss and (hopefully) bring the right images. I want to encourage them to make connections on their own vs. me making them for the students, which having a previously prepared image presentation does. I'm thinking students with IPads here (that function like the clickers) with wireless connection to classroom projector, but I don't want to monitor students surfing the web for material not related to class. I haven't used it yet but I plan to integrate it in the fall. I talked with Media Services about different methods. I love Christine and Tom! They are both so helpful! I really hope somebody plans on actually teaching and not just using technology. The ITS folks do a great job-- but my faculty colleagues too often care only to have the latest neat techie toy. That's not teaching. I would like to learn more about the software that allows me to "turn off" the students computers in the classroom. I know how to do the basics, but think I could do more... I appreciate upgrades, but it takes me time to adjust and relearn. WE NEED MORE MAC SUPPORT! IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE MAC TECH SUPPORT STAFF. Collaborate synchronous virtual environment - this is a feature I would like to learn more about. More SmartBoard access. Actual access for students to use. When they are doing practicum or student teaching, they need access to the boards to prepare and practice I wish there were microphones in class to project voice during lectures I think we should be more critical of our dependence on technology. Simply because the technology exists, it does not mean that we need to integrate it into the classroom across the board. I appreciate the technology resources at the college and would use them occasionally; however, I think the college is overly invested in technology in a way that is uncritical. New technology does not equate to better teaching; technology is a supplement to good teaching. I would like to see the Saint Rose website overhauled. I'd like each faculty member to have a default webpage with a uniform format and photo. I wish Mediasite could be more portable and used to record class lectures so I could post them on Bb. Just want to give a shout out to Rachel and the rest of the Media Services staff. They always provide prompt professional service and I appreciate their work very much.

  • 33. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 32 24. What other questions do you suggest we add to future surveys to help the College assess and understand the impact of technology on teaching and learning? Please provide us any other comments or suggestions here. Printing/Printers PLEASE MAKE COPYING FREE TO GRAD STUDENTS Your printers are always broken and malfunctioning. It's extremely irritating when many students rely on the campus printers for their work. Printer availability and color printing. Also more places to add money to account. Questions on the printing systems in the libarary and Lima lab regarding their reliability and usefulness. Computers are usually fine, but printers are a hot commodity. Many times they're broken, missing toner, not connected, erroring, or simply aren't enough available in different locations. Update the printers in Picotte Hall and keep a tech person to maintain them close at hand. Ask about the printers! Either broken, out of paper, or out of ink every time. More printing money each semester Did you have enough money, to print your assignments, on your ID Card? Were you able to print all of your assignments on campus? How often would you say the lab printer/s are unavailable, broken, out-of-ink, or in need of some form of maintenance? Provide more printers and fix them everyday. I'm tired of printers not having the right kind of paper, or any ink/toner. Printers are rarely functional and cause delays and added issues and stress to completing assignments and Usherwood is not very helpful or timely in fixing recurrent issues. The printer in Albertus hall never seems to be functioning properly. Most of my classes are in that building and I was rarely able to print from it. Therefore I was unable to print many of my assignments. Blackboard Allow Blackboard access to the Blackboard mobile app for more convienence while away from the computer. How many of your classes integrate Blackboard into their curriculum? (without this information you may be mistaken to believe that my answers pertain to all professors/courses... which they very much do not! I have had SEVERAL teachers who have never used it. After my first year here, I have had 6 professors, and only 2 have used BB!!) BB navigation needs to be clearer. When using blackboard for an online course you have to check all tabs to ensure that you have completed all parts of the assignment for the week. All teachers should use blackboard to post grades throughout the whole semester so students know how they are doing. blackboard is useful for grades, even if the professors only use it for that application it is nice to keep track.
  • 34. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 33 In question 16~the only real reason I like blackboard and find it useful is because that is where my professors post their lecture notes and my grades. this could be done through other means and therefore I don't think there is a direct relationship between my success and blackboard. I also think that courses in an online environment can only be a good thing if the subject matter is one which lends itself to being taught in such a fashion. I would like it if all of the professors are required to put grades online. Not all of my professors do this. It makes me very uncomfortable that I cannot check my progress when I need to. get rid of blackboard Network/Wireless Faster more reliable internet Satisfaction with wireless internet. At times my access point in my Dorming hall was not properly functioning How was the wifi service. In Lima hall, sometimes the wifi network was not very strong or working correctly. Smart Boards with all the changing technology I would like to see more workshops on one technology or entry level tech classess for grad students. I attended a SMARTboard workshop and would love to see more like that. More Smartboard use by teachers, especially for education majors. Smartboards are an excellent way to teach subjects in schools as well. Add answer to above question "What is the biggest challenge to classroom technology?". Answer: Smartboards not working properly. Use smart boards in class. More integration on uses of Blackboard and SmartBoards especially in my education classes, instead of just theory of ideas for use in the classroom. This is especially important for my education classes. Library Do you cite using the library services? I do and I can't figure out why AP A style doesn't format correctly. Librarians are not proficient at word or ppt ...it would be helpful to have someone available who can answer questions about these programs while im doing an assignment. perhaps offer a training on the newer versions of word and ppt? for students and faculty providing information for those to better learn how to use APA format, and revision on papers Do you cite using the library services? I do and I can't figure out why APA style doesn't format correctly. Faculty/Teaching My teachers would use power point presentations which come straight from the book and they as teacher do not add again to the slides. How can be teach professors to better utilize the available technology? I frequently ponder this question myself. Some of my professors do not use technology very often; mostly because they do not really know how. I am usually the "go to" student when something is not working properly
  • 35. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 34 and/or the professor does not know how to use it. I do not mind helping out, but it gets frustrating at times. I know college students are viewed as the tech savvy ones these days, but professors should at least know the basics. The worst thing that can happen is to have a missing grade on Blackboard and have the professor say "I do not know how that got there." I personally only know how to use Blackboard from the student end and quite honestly do not think I should have to know how to use it from the professor's end just to get the grade I earned in a class. It should be a requirement for all teachers to use Blackboard. It helps students track their grades and progress better, and it is easier for us to do better in classes knowing our status along the way. I have done better in the classes where my teacher uses Blackboard than in those classes where the teachers did not. I think it could also be a useful tool for teachers as well, if they use it correctly. I also think that there should be a yearly or per semester seminar for professors to be taught about the new technologies on campus. Only one of my teachers this semester (and I had 4 in class 1 online) knew how to properly use all the technology she was faced with. It's very difficult for students to learn material if half the class is taken up by the profressor trying to figure out how to get everything to work properly. I'm here to learn. I'd like to be able to do so, and do to that we need teachers who are taught how to use all the necessary materials. Most education professors are stupid and don't know how to teach. I wish professors would use blackboard more i find i like the classes that do use it more than the classes that dont use it. My professors really only use any technology for PowerPoint and to occasionally show videos. If technology is so important to the college they need to reach out to professors more to get them to integrate it into the classroom learning environment more. I appreciate technology in the learning environment. Those professors who do use it, really use it. Those who do not, do not use it at all. Technology can be helpful, but only if the quality of teachers is very high. Good teachers are far more important then fancy technology. Therefore, I believe blackboard and wireless Internet and such is good to have, but the focus of money spent should be teacher prep and good teaching salaries. One thing I have found is that the adjunct instructors are not always aware/familiar of/with use of Blackboard. I think it's important to point out that the full-time professors tend to have a better knowledge of the technology available on-campus, and tend to use it more regularly. Give some credit to teachers who don't like technology, don't really understand it, but try really hard to use it - in your question 2. are there teachers that use blackboard but not all of it? IE. Grades More Smartboard use by teachers, especially for education majors. Smartboards are an excellent way to teach subjects in schools as well. Online/Hybrid Courses more fully online classes The effect of offering online courses, helps commuter students out and also makes it easier to take more credits if the student is task oriented and motivated. I am taking a graduate level hybrid course for the first time and it is one of the most organized and well-planned course I have ever taken at the College. I have taken online courses in the past at other institutions and can honestly say that I learned very little. One reason I liked the hybrid course more than a traditional fully online course is because I feel that some human contact and interaction is necessary to fully process and absorb new information. The hybrid course I taking is "College Admissions Counseling" with Gloria Jean and the materials,
  • 36. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 35 resources, and assignments are so rich and meaningful - the structure she created could serve as an example to other faculty who are looking to develop hybrid courses. More online courses please! My classes in the fall and spring were online using Teacher Education Intstitute and they were fantastic! Smart Phones/Tablets/Laptops We should be able to use phones in class- I keep my calendar on my phone in lieu of a paper assignment book and it's annoying to get yelled at for writing assignments down in my phone if we would like to use ipads or tablets to take notes (i agree we should, but the problem would be paying attention, but since we have small classes, im not sure it would be too difficult.) plus if the teacher was using blackboard information it would be easier to access information via ipad. notes would be much simpler and faster so i could pay attention more rather than having to attempt to listen and write Some professors give us a hardtime about using laptops in class. I understand their concerns about students browsing the internet. But this is 2012, I don't like to take notes by hand. On my computer my notes are organized and saved. I am 26 years old, and don't appreciate some professors giving me a hard time for using a laptop. There should be a policy that students are allowed to use laptops in class for note taking purposes. I think that we should be able to use/ bring our laptops and handheld devices to take notes. With regard to #6 - It's because I'm not allowed to. The use of smart phones is prohibited in classes. This is a silly policy and should be discontinued. Computer Labs It would be beneficial to have computer labs where classes are not held during the afternoons and evenings, strictly computer labs for student use. Typically, computer labs such as Lima Lab and Brubacher Lab are extremely noisy and unable to be tamed by Security. Perhaps having lab aides stationed in these labs on a more frequent basis would alleviate this problem. Do you want there to be more computer labs on the campus with music programs such as Sibelius, reason, pro tools, and garage band? Cause I do!!!!!! How long do you think every computer lab should be open?
  • 37. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 36 Which computer lab do you rely on the most? Do you often have problems with campus computers freezing or crashing? Were you able to access all of the programs your classes require, in every computer lab on campus? What limitations do you find, when you work in a campus computer lab? Are any of the programs you use in class, prone to crashing? General Comments The science laboratory technology could use upgrading particularly with the increasing number of students that use the equipment. technology does more bad than good. make fat lazy kids carry and read real books, walk their ass to class, and live in a world that isnt behind a screen. more of a music tech budget would be appreciated. we need new mics and drum heads bad. My classes in the fall and spring were online using Teacher Education Intstitute and they were fantastic! I LOVE all the technology on campus, it makes my life a lot easier. Thanks for all that you do to keep Saint Rose running. (I feel like people give you the short end of the stick since they only talk to you when things aren't working and they take you for granted when things are working) Do not use iwebfolio EVER. I know that you are switching the platform for SEED students anyway next year, but I wanted one last chance to express my displeasure that 46 student teaching candidates had issues with this website at one point or another and the best IT'S could tell us was "not our problem, contact the company." Very frustrating experience. This is my 5th year (now a grad student) at this school) and the only technology I ever use on campus is the wireless and I strongly believe that it is wrong to charge me so much money on my tuition bill for technology fees when I hardly use any of it. Maybe you can ask about the students thoughts on wether they prefer macs over windows or visa versa Refresher workshops on the updated software versions such as PowerPoint, Excel, Access, MS Word ect. Have courses where we can use either Macintosh or Window or linux. Right now all my classes have been geared towards Windows. While in the real world Linux and Mac's are starting to be more popular in programming. I would suggest that we stop buying flat screen monitors and instead use the money for more important things, like stop the policy of having to swipe your ID card to print. We all know this is to save money on ink and paper, which is ridiculous due to the amount of money we spend to attend Saint Rose. I don't care about the aesthetics of my technology, as long as I can ACTUALLY use the resources available, rather than not be able to print out my assignments. (ITS Note: Flat screen monitors are now the industry standard. They use much less electricity and contain far fewer heavy metals than the CRT monitors they replaced. The cost is also about the same.) with all the changing technology I would like to see more workshops on one technology or entry level tech classess for grad students. I attended a SMARTboard workshop and would love to see more like that. I feel as though there should be an integration of technology, but there needs to be a balance.
  • 38. Spring 2012 Faculty & Student Technology Surveys Report Page 37 Survey Suggestions Ask for majors and year because new generations are going to change the face of technology in education. Allow for more open-ended answers. Answers provided were very limiting! The technology workshop offered during Graduate orientation was not helpful! Handouts and explanation of other technologies (moodle) that some professors use would have been very helpful. In general I have found IT services at the college lacking and very frustrating. Too many different log-in procedures. There always seems to be a wrinkle or complication; very frustrating!! IT help services either unable to help or gives wrong information or are unsure of information. Can't assume that grad students will know how to use college computer system!! I think that a lot of these questions were important to ask however I also feel as if the questions could have been worded better. With #16, if you put "neutral" or added it to the current "unsure", it'd be beneficial; since unsure implies not knowing, and the other means we're not leaning either way. I chose "unsure" because there was no "neutral" option, not because I didn't know... The questions on if we use different types of technology in our classroom either answer yes, or no but it would be helpful was extremely bias and didn't allow for anyone to tell if they dont think it would be useful. wording the questions so you could indicate some, perhaps not all professors do not use technology When rating technology, add a "Do not currently use, and don't think it would be useful in your studies" option. Just because we don't have something doesn't mean we need it or want it I would suggest less questions. It becomes monotonous. you should add not applicable as an option to question 3. are you satisfied with the speed of technology? Part 3 (Which of the following technologies/internet tools do you) requires a third response option to note that the technology would NOT be useful in a classroom, which I believe to be the case with most options listed. I believe that technology is crucial to learning, but most of the ideas and options listed in this survey are poor choices in learning with technology. I believe survey is well structured and all required questions are added. Please consult with the college's dept. of computer science. They are real experts in integrating technology into education, and I am told they never get consulted on these matters. What a wasted opportunity for the college! (ITS Note: The Department Chairperson for CS is on the Academic Technology Committee which guides technology decisions for the College.) Make better options on the drop down menus. It seems that the survey assumes that everyone wants more technology/more technology is better and therefore the survey is biased. Audio editing software questions. We should be able to use phones in class- I keep my calendar on my phone in lieu of a paper assignment book and it's annoying to get yelled at for writing assignments down in my phone. Have you ever had to call I.T.S? Please rate their usefulness. Question #3 should have an option that you would not incorporate that technology in the classroom, as well as an option that you use the technology, just not in the classroom.
