series“HarleyandtheDavid-
sons”airsMonday,Sept.5,on
thecabler,withthefinaltwoin-
stallmentsrunningTuesdayand
Wednesday,Sept.6and7.

(“GameofThrones”)andBug

asBillandArthur,respectively,
“HarleyandtheDavidsons”
isbasedonatruestory—one
thatmakesforcompellingTV,
evenifyou’renotamotorcycle
aficionado.Twopalsembarkon
ariskyadventure,goupagainst
seeminglyinsurmountableodds
(andtoughcompetition),and
fightandclawtheirwaytosuc-
cessandrecognition.Inthiscase,
weknowtheoutcome—Harley-
Davidsonhasbeenaroundfor
morethan100years,andhas
grownintoawayoflifeforgen-
erations.
But,asAramayoandHalltold
TVMediaduringaroundtable
interview,thefocusisn’tjust
onmotorcycles.“Thisstoryis
aboutpeople,”Aramayosaid.
“It’saboutthedevelopmentofa
motorcycle,butit’salsoaboutthe
peoplewhocreatedit.”
“Attheendoftheday,nobody
actuallywatchesashowabout
motorcycles,theywatchashow
aboutpeople,”Halladded.“In
reallife,theseguyshadagreat
loveforeachother,andtheir
storyashumanbeingswasjust
exceptional,andthat’swhat’sre-
allyappealingaboutthis.”
MichielHuisman(“Gameof
Thrones”)roundsoutthebig
threeasArthur’solderbrother,
WalterDavidson,whowasalso
acompanyfounder.Walterwas
thedaredevilofthebunch,but
withArthur’ssalesmanshipand
Bill’screativity,theygrewtobe
anunstoppableandinseparable
team—whichissomethingthat
Hallsaidalsohappenedamong
thethreeactors.
“Icansaywithabsolutecer-
taintythat,in25yearsofdoing
thisjob,I’veneverbeenasclose
withanybodyasIwaswithRob
andMichiel,”saidHall.“We
hadanamewecalledourselves,
theBottomButtonBrothers,
becauseArthur,Billandallthose
guysinthephotographsalways
hadtheirbottombuttonbut-
tonedontheirsuitjackets.Were-
ally,reallycareabouteachother,
andIthinkthattranslatesonthe
screenaswell.”

withHallwaspracticallyinstan-
taneousandmirroredthestory
“HarleyandtheDavidsons”
islookingtotell.“Whatwasso
enjoyableformewasthewayin
whichthingsdeveloped[with
Hall],”hesaid,“becauseitseems
similartothetimelinethatwe
wereportraying.MeandBug
struckupveryimmediatelyan
instantfriendship,andIthink
thatwaslovely,butitwasalso
veryusefulwhentellingthe
beginningsofthe[show’s]story
becauseit’stwoyoungladsin
Milwaukeewhogetoneanother
intotrouble.”
Ofcourse,itcan’tbeallfun
andgamesforthethreeyoung
Wisconsinites—there’salways
somesortofadversitylurking
aroundthecorner.Whetherit’s
provingthecriticswrong,going
upagainstabig-namecorpora-
tionthatalreadyhasastrong
footholdinthemotorbikemarket
orfacingthedangersthatmo-
torbikeracingandmotordromes
inherentlypose,Arthur,Billand
Walterultimatelyhavetoleanon
eachothertoensuretheirbud-
dingbusinesssurvives.
