   Magazine For
    Scouting In
      Croydon

Presentation By James Henley
Proposal
• Campfire
• Monthly magazine for
  scouts and residents
  local to Croydon
• Priced at £5.00 to cover
  publishing costs
Scouting
• Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a
worldwide youth movement with the stated aim of
supporting young people in their physical, mental and
spiritual development, that they may play constructive
    roles in society.
• Scouting began in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell,
Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first
Scouting encampment at Brownsea Island in England.
Baden-Powell wrote the principles of Scouting in Scouting
for Boys (London, 1908), based on his earlier military
books, with influence and support of Frederick Russell
Burnham (Chief of Scouts in British Africa), Ernest
Thompson Seton of the Woodcraft Indians, William
Alexander Smith of the Boys' Brigade, and his publisher
Pearson. During the first half of the 20th century, the
movement grew to encompass three major age groups
each for boys (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Rover Scout) and,
in 1910, a new organization, Girl Guides, was created for
girls (Brownie Guide, Girl Guide and Girl Scout, Ranger
    Guide).
• In 2011, Scouting and Guiding together had over 41
million members worldwide. The two largest umbrella
organizations are the World Organization of the Scout
Movement (WOSM), for boys-only and co-educational
organizations, and the World Association of Girl Guides
and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), primarily for girls-only
    organizations but also accepting co-educational
organizations. The year 2007 marked the centenary of
Scouting world wide, and member organizations planned
    events to celebrate the occasion.

The competition
               Scouting magazine
               Nationwide
               Doesn’t cater for local
               area scouts
               Sometimes contains
               reports on camps etc.

This seems to be the only competition this
magazine would have as there are no
magazines for scouting in Croydon, however
there are magazines that are for other local
area scouts.

  – “OK but some people may not know
what it means (relates to scouting)”
• “Campfire”
  – 65% chose this
  – “Everyone knows what it means and
    know it relates to scouting”
• “I promise”
  – 0% chose this
  – “Kind of boring, not very catchy”
Design

  image/clipart would be
  needed:

                              Too simplistic
 Simple and Too detailed
 catchy and rough
Designing the
                 mastheads

“Very eye catching and the colours work well”

“The font isn’t the best but it looks OK”

“Not very eye catching and generally doesn’t look very good”
Front Page/Double
Page Spread Design
Front Page Survey
      Results
67% Liked the one I used

33% Disliked the one I used
Advertising
Pricing
• Only 20% of those asked were prepared
to pay >£5.00 for this type of magazine

• Cost of printing £955.52 for 250 copies
• We would have to sell at least 200
    copies to make profit

Notas do Editor

  1. Hello, in this PowerPoint I shall be proposing a new magazine for scouting in Croydon, involving what goes on, camps that have taken place recently and information involving scouts in Croydon.
  2. I have decided that the magazine will be called ‘Campfire,’ as this is a main feature of scout camping and it was the most popular title I got from my focus groups and surveys. It shall be a monthly magazine for Scouts and residents local to Croydon. It will have to be priced at £5.00 to cover publishing/printing costs.
  3. This is some background information about Scouting, for example when the Scout organization was formed by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1907.
  4. There are approximately 390,000 scouts in the UK, around 1000 of those in Croydon. There are around 250 adult volunteers between 50 groups so the market caters for old and young ages.
  5. These are the ages of the different scout sections, so most types will have to be catered for in the magazine.
  6. Here is some extra information about Scouts in Croydon as a market
  7. I set up a survey on www.surveymonkey.com and asked fellow peers to decide on Masthead styles and Front page styles. I also had a focus group in which I asked questions that I could not cover in the survey.
  8. We will have constraints from The Scout Association as they may not want us to publish some things. We will also have constraints from parents and Scout groups as they may not want us to publish photos of their child/scout.
  9. There is only one other magazine that could give us competition but it is nationwide and our magazine is more local so we will not be affected.
  10. In my survey I asked peers to choose which masthead they liked the best and they chose ‘Campfire’ as they felt it related most to scouting.
  11. To accompany the text I chose a clipart campfire, of which the first one was chosen in the survey as it was simple and eye-catching.
  12. When designing the masthead I had to make sure the colours flowed and most people thought the first one worked well as the text looked as if it was lit up by the fire.
  13. Most camping equipment stores would want to advertise in our magazine, as if scouts needed equipment they would know where to go and what to buy. The Duke of Edinburgh award may want to advertise as you learn many of the skills needed for DofE in scouts.
  14. I worked out the pricing of publishing the magazine, courtesy of Print24. The cost of printing would come to approximately £950, so we would have to sell at least 200 copies of the magazine to cover printing costs, which can be easily achieved. If the magazine becomes popular, then we may have to print more copies.
  15. I would now like to invite you to ask any questions you may have.
