• Early pirates were
  prominent around the
  Aegean and Mediterranean
  Seas in the 14th centuries.

   Ancient Roman Trireme used
   by pirates.
• The Vikings were arguably
  modern Europe’s first
  pirates.

• What can be said about
  the locations the Vikings
  attacked?
• We could spend slides on slides on slides on
slides on slides talking about the different
pirates of ancient times...but we have other
places to see and people to meet!
• I’m also tired of talking, so I’ll just let YouTube
  take over for a bit:
• Rules, rules, rules
(Some of) Bartholomew Robert’s Rules of Conduct

ARTICLE I - Every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of
moment. He shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or
strong liquors at any time seized, and shall use them at pleasure
unless a scarcity may make it necessary for the common good
that a retrenchment may be voted.
ARTICLE IV - The lights and candles should be put out at eight
at night, and if any of the crew desire to drink after that hour they
shall sit upon the open deck without lights.
ARTICLE VII - He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in
time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.
• The Quartermaster was
  responsible for food rations,
  discipline, and splitting the
  plunder.
• The Captain had total authority
  during battle, but less
  authority outside of battle.
The
Code....is
In 1718 in Nassau, Anne
                           Bonne falls in love with
                           “Calico” Jack Rackham

The two soon capture Mark Reed…who turns out to be
Mary Reed.

     aka. The Realm
     of Pirates
It’s a messy map,
but what does it
suggest about
possible reasons
for becoming a
pirate?
Again, it’s a messy map (it depicts Caribbean trade routes)
but what, if anything, does it suggest about reasons for
becoming a pirate?
The Golden Age of Piracy (1700-1730)
  • Many Former privateers
opted for a life of piracy as
    opposed to settled life.

  • There was a variety of
    reasons for the abundance
    of pirates, from a desire
    for adventure to the
    availability of gold.

Sir Francis Drake, one of the most famous
privateers.
TORTUGA!

17th century drawing of Tortuga
The City of Port Royal
The Queen Anne’s Revenge,
Blackbeard’s flagship, could
be seen flying this flag as it
traveled the Eastern Coast of
the United States
Hoist the Colors
The Governor of the
Bahamas Woodes Rogers
was largely responsible
for driving the pirates
out of the Caribbean for
good.
• What was the significance of pirates?
How do they fit in to the greater
  picture of colonial life?
• Why were the pirates successful? Why
  weren’t they successful?
• Research a particular pirate, group of
pirates, or even a pirate hunter from
any particular era or region. How does
this relate to the concepts and idea you
  just heard about?
