Career Exploration
On velvetjobs.com, I researched my career area and came across many results.
Based on my primary career area I found some job opening that would be perfect for me.
CBS Radio is looking for a morning show on air personality. In the United States, CBS
Radio is one of the largest major-market broadcast media operators. Also, this
organization is the leader when it comes to news and sports radio. 72 million consumers
nationwide are reached each week via broadcasting. For more information on this
position and contacting information, velvetjobs.com provided the CBS Radio website,
which is www.cbsrado.com. On both websites listed, there wasn’t a lead contacting
person provided for applicants.
On the Occupation Outlook Quarterly website I reviewed Radio and Television
Announcers occupations. As an announcer some of the tasks that an individual needs to
be able to perform are preparing and delivering news, sports, or weather reports. It is also
important that the announcer is able to identify the station, and introduce or close shows.
As an announcer you can use memorized scripts for broadcasting or read scripts. Special
guest may be featured in a show so studying background information to prepare for
programs or interviews is crucial for this position. As an announcer individuals are able
to interview show guests about their lives, their work, or topics of current interest.
2. Another part of this position is being able to make promotional appearances at public or
private events to represent their employers (Occupational outlook quarterly, n.d.).
When it comes to knowledge needed for this position, most employers look for
candidates with vocational school training, related on-the-job experience, or an
associate’s degree. At Ferris State University a course that would be beneficial for this
position is broadcasting presentation. Job shadowing or interning at a radio station would
also be beneficial for this position. There are many skills required for this position, being
an active listener and a great speaker are one. Critical thinking is one of the most
important skills required because an announcer should be able to use logic and reasoning
to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to a problem (Occupational
outlook quarterly, n.d.). One also needs to be good at time management. This means
being able to manage one’s time as well as the time of others. Social perceptiveness is
also a required skill for an announcer. Being aware of others reactions and understanding
why they react the way they do is crucial to this position. Having coordination is another
skill employers look for. Being able to adjust to actions in relation to others actions is a
great skill to have for working within a team or group. A few other skills one should
possess are writing, judgment, and decision-making.
Wages for a radio and television announcer may very depending on state to state.
The median wages for 2014 in Michigan is $14.32 hourly and $29,790 annual
(Occupational outlook quarterly, n.d.). Within this career field one can become a
production manager or apart of the production team. As a producer one is required to
write and edit news stories from information collected by reporter and other sources. A
producer coordinates the activities of writers, directors, and managers. On of the most
3. important tasks a producer has to fulfill is reviewing film, recordings, or rehearsals to
ensure conformance to production and broadcast standards (Occupational outlook
quarterly, n.d.). The median wage for 2014 in Michigan for this position is $33.22 hourly
and $69,100 annual.
