Colour
On this poster for Shaun of the dead the
colour red is predominantly used, this is
because of the films theme as a horror
film. The colour red also plays a big part
in the film, as it is the colour of blood so
you do see red a lot when characters are
being eaten or when seeing a zombie
there is usually blood around their
mouths. It also has another role in the
film as there is an ongoing joke with the
characters to always say “you’ve got red
on you” to each other. Also in the poster
you can see that the zombies are quite
grey and dark, you can see that they’re
dead, yet Shaun and his flowers are very
brightly coloured, almost like he is in a
heavenly light. This is because Shaun is
the hero of the film and the zombies are
the bad guys, Shaun tries to save his
friends and family from the zombies,
therefore making him a hero.
Location
Shaun of the dead takes place in
rural London, This is why on the
front cover it looks like Shaun is on
the tube with zombies.
Throughout the film Shaun takes
his friends and family through a
series of different locations, trying
to get to their main goal, the pub,
as that’s the only secure place
they know. This makes the film
really entertaining as it is a mix of
horror, comedy and romance. The
decision to go to the pub causes a
lot of friction between the
characters, as some of the
characters think it’s bad idea and
the others don’t, but ultimately
they get to the pub, which is
where the films climax takes
place.
Actor/Costume
Simon Pegg is the actor the plays
the film’s hero Shaun, he also co
wrote the film along with Edgar
Wright, who also directed the film.
The costume Simon Pegg is wearing
for Shaun is a work uniform for a TV
company, which is shirt, red tie, and
pants. Another part of his costume
is his red pen that keeps leaking in
his shirt pocket, which always leads
the other characters to say “you’ve
got red on you.”
Meaning
The meaning created by the use of the
colours the lighting and the costumes is
that it immediately tells you that Shaun
is the hero used by the lighting and
colour around him, compared to the
zombies. The zombies are all darkened
and grey which shows they’re dead,
they’re monsters. Yet Shaun is well light
up showing he is the hero. You also tell
the zombies are monster by their eyes,
their eyes even look dead which makes
you scared of them, which is why all the
zombies are looking at you.
Colour
On this poster for Star Wars:
The Force Awakens, the main
colours used are blue and
red, which symbolises that
the film is a war between
good and evil. The colours
blue and red play a big part in
the whole star wars
franchise, as blue has always
symbolised the Jedi’s and red
has always symbolised the
Sith.
Location
Star Wars takes place
in a galaxy far, far
away, which means
anything can happen.
This is always
effective because it
always keeps the
viewer guessing, you
never know what can
happen.
Meaning
The meaning used by the colours is to show
that the plot of Star Wars is still a war between
good and evil. This is shown by the clear divide
between the colours red and blue, which
represent good and bad.
Colour
The two main colours used in the
Shawshank poster are black and
white. The black is used to
represent Shawshank, the prison
Andy desperately needs to escape
from, yet the white that is facing
him represents his hope for
freedom, what is driving him
towards escaping, keeping him
alive.
Characters
The film’s main characters are Andy
and Red, played by Tim Robbinson
and Morgan Freeman. Both
characters are very different, Andy
wants out of Shawshank, no matter
what is thrown at him, he has hope.
Yet Red has become what he calls
“institutionalized” he has become
dependent on the prison walls, the
structure of prison, he fears the
outside world because he’s been in
prison his whole life. An example of
this is shown in the film, when
another character called Brooks is
released from prison after being in
there for 60 years, he is only out of
prison for a week before he commits
suicide, he doesn’t understand the
outside world, because he hadn’t
seen it evolve, and he couldn’t
handle it. This has a big impact on
Red but not Andy. Andy still has
hope, this leads to a divide in the
characters, as the prison starts to
whittle Andy away, little by little. But
he never loses hope and eventually
escapes. Red is the released on
Parole, he finds Andy in Mexico, as it
is a place they said they would meet
after getting out.
Meaning
The whole meaning of The Shawshank Redemption is to not give up hope, no
matter what is thrown at you, no matter what happens, don’t give up, because
you can get through it and in the end everything will be better, it’s all worth it.
This is shown by what is shown to be Andy’s decline to giving up by everything
Shawshank throws at him, yet he escapes to Mexico and opens a boat shop with
Red on the coast.
Soundtrack
• Clip 1
– The genre of this music sounds like it is taken
from a horror film or action film. The
connotations of the picture and the music
makes me think that the people have maybe
discovered something horrific on the computer
or are working against the clock to stop
something.
• Clip 2
– The genre of this music sounds like it is taken
from a romance film. The connotations of the
picture and the music make me think that one
of the characters is in love with the other.
Shining
• The techniques used to make the shining look
like a romantic comedy are the music has
been completely changed, even over scenes
that are scary in the film to make it seem like
it is innocent, with some very good editing.
The narrator has a script that changes the
whole plot of the film.
Scary Mary
• The techniques used to make Mary Poppins
like a horror film are the music has been
completely changed to be scary, a grey
shadowy effect has been added over the
footage to make it look mysterious and the
clips have all been edited together really well
to make it look like Mary Poppins is killing the
children.
Stereotypes
Men
• Love football
• Works to put food on
the table
• Hench
Women
• Do all the housework
• Look after the kids
• Bad drivers
Stereotypes
Upper Class
• Posh
• Greedy
• More important
• Well educated
• Well dressed
Working Class
• Represent as poor
• Not as educated
• Rough
Stereotypes
Old People
• Lots of money
• Complain about the
youth and
technology
• Eat prunes
Young People

Narrative
• Narrative Definition
– This is where a character or a book or film will speak about their account of events which are
connected.
• Linear Narrative Definition
– This is where the narrator will talk about events in their order rather than using flash backs or
flash forwards
• Linear Narrative Film Example
– Lots of children's films follow linear narratives as it is easy for them to follow, one example of this is
Toy Story
• Non-Linear Narrative Definition
– This is where the narrator will not talk about events in their order, some times it will jump to a flash
back or flash forward and eventually piece together with the present
• Non-Linear Narrative Film Example
– Reservoir dogs is a good example of a non linear narrative as the film starts at then end, the
robbery has already gone wrong, then it skips back to the beginning when the characters where
planning the robbery, it skips back and forth, it does this because the robbers think someone has
ratted them out, so it does this so you can build your own suspicions and figure out who the rat is.
Clip Analysis
• In the beginning of the clip Kanan and Ezra are running back to their ship with the
rest of the crew when they both suddenly stop, saying they can feel the cold. The
shot then pans over to Darth Vader. This is done because it shows that the
meaning of evil is cold and dark, where as good is bright and warm. Then when
Kanan and Ezra engage in combat with Darth Vader he is shown as much taller
than them, he is towering over them which shows his power, this is then also
shown when they struggle to fight him, as Darth Vader easily overpowers them,
almost killing Ezra. Kanan and Ezra are wearing much lighter clothes than Darth
Vader, clearing showing that he is the bad guy in this situation. Towards the end of
the clip Ezra says “ if that doesn’t kill him what will?! “ to which Kana replies “ not
us !” clearly showing that they cannot win this time, only emphasising how
powerless they are too him. Yet they never give up, they learn and adapt so they
can be stronger than Darth Vader. That is the whole meaning of Star Wars, to
never stop fighting, to become better than your enemies so that you win, not lose.

Shining • The techniques used to make the shining look like a romantic comedy are the music has been completely changed, even over scenes that are scary in the film to make it seem like it is innocent, with some very good editing. The narrator has a script that changes the whole plot of the film.
  • 10. Scary Mary • The techniques used to make Mary Poppins like a horror film are the music has been completely changed to be scary, a grey shadowy effect has been added over the footage to make it look mysterious and the clips have all been edited together really well to make it look like Mary Poppins is killing the children.
  • 11. Stereotypes Men • Love football • Works to put food on the table • Hench Women • Do all the housework • Look after the kids • Bad drivers
  • 12. Stereotypes Upper Class • Posh • Greedy • More important • Well educated • Well dressed Working Class • Represent as poor • Not as educated • Rough
  • 13. Stereotypes Old People • Lots of money • Complain about the youth and technology • Eat prunes Young People • Cause trouble • Lazy • Have it easy
  • 17. Narrative • Narrative Definition – This is where a character or a book or film will speak about their account of events which are connected. • Linear Narrative Definition – This is where the narrator will talk about events in their order rather than using flash backs or flash forwards • Linear Narrative Film Example – Lots of children's films follow linear narratives as it is easy for them to follow, one example of this is Toy Story • Non-Linear Narrative Definition – This is where the narrator will not talk about events in their order, some times it will jump to a flash back or flash forward and eventually piece together with the present • Non-Linear Narrative Film Example – Reservoir dogs is a good example of a non linear narrative as the film starts at then end, the robbery has already gone wrong, then it skips back to the beginning when the characters where planning the robbery, it skips back and forth, it does this because the robbers think someone has ratted them out, so it does this so you can build your own suspicions and figure out who the rat is.
  • 18. Clip Analysis • In the beginning of the clip Kanan and Ezra are running back to their ship with the rest of the crew when they both suddenly stop, saying they can feel the cold. The shot then pans over to Darth Vader. This is done because it shows that the meaning of evil is cold and dark, where as good is bright and warm. Then when Kanan and Ezra engage in combat with Darth Vader he is shown as much taller than them, he is towering over them which shows his power, this is then also shown when they struggle to fight him, as Darth Vader easily overpowers them, almost killing Ezra. Kanan and Ezra are wearing much lighter clothes than Darth Vader, clearing showing that he is the bad guy in this situation. Towards the end of the clip Ezra says “ if that doesn’t kill him what will?! “ to which Kana replies “ not us !” clearly showing that they cannot win this time, only emphasising how powerless they are too him. Yet they never give up, they learn and adapt so they can be stronger than Darth Vader. That is the whole meaning of Star Wars, to never stop fighting, to become better than your enemies so that you win, not lose. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFK1YmIwgls&t=100s • (Here is the link)
