2. February 2003: Heads of Government:
“Agreed to establish a Task Force, comprised of Barbados, Grenada,
Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago to develop
recommendations for a Regional Energy Policy, which would address
issues such as-
(i) security of energy supplies;
(ii) energy pricing policy and the impact on relative competitiveness
in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy; and
(iii) purchasing and transportation arrangements”
3. Following issues were subsequently added to agenda:
• Natural gas;
• Renewable energy;
• Investment requirements and coordinated investments in
the Regional Energy sector;
• Energy efficiency;
• Environmental Impact; and
• Rationalization of the Regional Energy Sector.
4. Some major recommendations:
• Co-operation amongst national oil companies
• Co-ordinate shipping and storage
• Encourage development of natural gas supply
network
• Explore possibilities of long-distance electricity
transmission (hydro)
